This book was filled with life lessons. The book’s pictures are imaginative and attention grabbing. The grandchildren loved listening to it especially the lesson at the end. Perfect for bedtime.
I enjoyed reading this book to my baby. It is nicely illustrated, and even though Zachary is kind of mean at first, he turns it all around in the end. Plus, there’s free extras.
Actual rating 4.5.
There’s just something so irresistible about a naughty cute character who learns a lesson in the end. I also happen to think that Zachary is the perfect name for this sneaky rodent.
This story was cute enough with a good lesson, but the illustrations really helped solidify the overall moral. It was all very fun.
My only complaint is that I felt the ending came abruptly. It would have been nice to see Zachary reach out and apologize to his friends, but at least we know it all ends well.
Recommended as a fun bedtime story or social lesson.
Fun picture book for discussing sharing. Cute pictures, perfect for reading aloud.
The grandkids enjoyed it.
Liked the message
Cute book to read to child about sharing and not keeping things for yourself.
Fun and entertaining.

I really enjoyed reading this book to my toddler grandson. Love the pictures and moral.
I gave it to my grandchildren to read!!
Cute children’s book. My son loved it! (And so did the couple in the doctors office waiting room where I read it to him.) After I finished they immediately asked me for the title and author so that they could download it for one of their grandchildren whom they thought the book would be perfect for.
Definitely one we’ll read over and over; with the illustrations bright and keeping my son engaged, this book is a win!
Enjoyable, would recommend for young children.
My five year old thought it was a funny story. There was a hidden moral of sharing in the story.
My 7 year old grandson really enjoyed reading the book.
Beautiful and colorful illustrations. Cute characters. Teaches rhyming.
Love it. Teaches about sharing and being a good friend.
It’s a well crafted and well illustrated book . The language and verse is easy to follow, but occasionally the writer throws in what would be a new word to many readers or targeted audience. This is a great way to encourage children to look up words and learn new ones.
Even good for adults.
From Selfish to Sharing, even good for adults. I recently created enlarged font song sheets for me to use. Doing this for myself is ‘selfish’. “Sharing” with my team, not selfish. I will share this nice ‘mouse and potato and then cheese’ story by Junia Wonders with my team too. Great reminder on sharing. Love the graphics too.
Greed is NOT Good
This is a fun and silly book that still manages to have a nice lesson. Zachary is a rat that lives under a bakeshop. He prides himself on stealing just one baked good a day and hoarding it beneath the floorboards. He won’t share it with his friends when they ask. One day, a bag of potatoes shows up. Zachary tries them and starts hoarding them. Figuring that the baker won’t notice missing potatoes, he gets greedy but still doesn’t share. One of his friends tries to convince him that the potatoes will turn green and sprout, but Zachary believes that potatoes will last forever. Even though Zachary eats away at his stash, the potatoes do eventually go bad. The bakeshop owner realizes his potatoes are missing and finds them beneath the floorboards. He is none too pleased, so Zachary escapes. He finds a new home underneath a brewery that has spent grains. His friends from the bakeshop join him there. (You can tell they are from there as they have the same colors as the rats at the bakeshop.) There is plenty of spent grain to share, and he has a much more fun time when sharing with his friends.
The story is told in four-line stanzas where the 2nd and 4th line rhyme. It didn’t always scan perfectly in that sing-song way I like for children’s books, but it was okay. I like the illustrations. They are simple with a light and clean color palette but still give a good sense of what is going on. By the way, the bakeshop owner is a little menacing toward the rat, but we see it in shadow; it could disturb some small children.
