From debut author Caroline Kepnes comes You, a brilliant and terrifying novel for the social media age.
When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.
There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe … incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight — the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.
As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way — even if it means murder.
A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that’s being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King’s Misery.

As I was getting ready to read You I discovered The Voices of Joe: Caroline Meets Santino, an interesting lead-in to You. You is my second read from author Caroline Kepnes. Well-written & captivating with well-developed main characters. In every sense of the word, a thriller! A dark tale of a stalker obsessed with his ideal woman. Narrator Santino …
I think it’s very interesting to have an unreliable narrator as the protagonist. We see things from his perspective and we are always left wondering if we know the real story.
YOU is a debut novel, and I was flabbergasted to read that it had indeed been edited. And by the way, in one place it should read “Nicky”, not “Danny”. It’s unfortunate that there weren’t more typos (there are only a couple), it would have made the book way more entertaining but I would not have enjoyed several catnaps while trying to slog …
The writing is superb! Joe is, well…a must read to find out.
I like that the book was written from the ‘stalkers’ point of view and we were able to dive into his mentally ill mind. I found the character of Beck a bit annoying however. I didn’t find myself rooting for her at times-like I did in the Netflix series. She was a bit more likeable on the show.
Very easy read-finished it in two sittings. Excited …
The writing was excellent, the plot at times thrilling, creepy, inexplicable, and I really wanted to like this book. I came with high expectations, but in the end, left somewhat disappointed. I disliked every character. I understand that was the point, but there has to be at least ONE decent human being in the books I connect with. I don’t feel …
Very twisted. Took me a bit to get into it.
Holy smokes, this book is intense and creepy and I can’t put it down!! Will finish this review when I finish the book but if it keeps going the way it is now, it’s one of the best thrillers I’ve ever read!
One of my favorite new authors by far.
I’d go as high as 3 and a half stars for this one. Wanted to read it before I watched the Netflix special. Psychological thriller, taut with tension, held my interest, but I felt like the author kept us on the surface. I did like the original viewpoint. If you’re looking for character depth, though, or likable characters, this might not be for …
In my top five all time favorite books. It is a thriller and a love story. The TV series does a dreadful job of capturing the wit and complexity of the characters. Worst of all, it totally lacks the smart, bookish in-jokes that true bibliophiles will delight in. It is utterly original. I changed my mind 10 times in the last 5 pages as to how the …
I first heard about the YOU television show when all my friends were raving about it. I was already hooked when I found out it was based on a book. By then
I couldn’t stop to read the book first. I think they did a great job making the transition from page to screen. I didn’t think Joe could get any more creepy but OMG! He his uber crazy. 30% …
It was a good, fast read and it definitely kept me guessing until the end! Not predictable at all. It’s super creepy because with social media, there are so many things you really can manipulate and this uses that culture to propel the story further. Good character development. Will have to try the next book in the series!
Brilliant story! I liked that I could NOT predict what he was going to do throughout the whole book, and just when you thought you could, think again! Joe was as crazy, yet cool, as they come. Psychopathic, unpredictable, crazy Joe. Yep, that sums him up but you also LIKE him, which is insane! Caroline did an amazing job with his character. This …
I’ve never read a book like this. First of all, I’d read the second one first, because I’d seen it on a list of recommended summer reads for 2018, and it was available at my library, while “You” was not. So going into this book, I knew a little about what was going to happen, but I was not prepared for this fascinating story, or the way it was …
I just finished this book yesterday. I’m giving it 2 stars because I feel the first half of the book was moderately intriguing but the second half was predictable. I stopped reading it for about a week once I was about half way through then I decided I’ll finish it and see how it goes. I did not like the lame ending; very anticlmatic. I have been …
Audiobook: Narrator – Santino Fontana
Oh man! This narrator totally sold me on this character and this story. This wasn’t someone reading a story and changing their voice here and there, this was vocal acting. I’m not sure that I’ve ever listened to anything as well performed as this. I could almost feel the sweat, the spittle and the evil …
I absolutely loved it! Not enough books like this out there (:
These are dark books. I did like the writing style and I was captivated. It is odd to read of evil and somehow think it is normal.
