From debut author Caroline Kepnes comes You, a brilliant and terrifying novel for the social media age.
When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.
There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe … incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight — the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.
As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way — even if it means murder.
A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that’s being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King’s Misery.

The type of book I wish I’d written. In the age of social media, this chilling novel will have you questioning how much access other people have to your life. With a little bit of cunning, what can a person get away with? A page turner with one of the most distinctive narrative voices I’ve ever encountered in a book, the story of Joe and Beck will …
This would be my choice to be made into a movie. It would be a wonderful thriller and with the right director, it could be chilling until the end!
I started reading this so I could freely watch the TV show of the same name. Once I was well in, out of curiosity, I watched the first episode. Holy cow! I had to all-stop and wait for DH; I knew this was a show/story he’d dig. Crazy, twisty, ends-justify-the-means type of story. Highly recommended.
I listened to this book on audio, twice. At least. And I fell in love with the story. The narrator does such a great job depicting Joe—who is funny, flawed, and a total stalker. Did I mention that he’s a stalker? Yeah. That. Caroline Kepnes’s book, You, had me riveted from the first chapter. It’s a fascinating and horrifying depiction of a …
This book was a recommendation by a friend. After reading a few good reviews, I figured I’d give it whirl. The cover quote from Stephen King didn’t hurt, either. My conclusion? Holy hell, what a book. Seriously, this book blew me away and is one of my go-to recommendations to friends who are looking for a fast paced thriller.
You is told in …
I am still haunted by this book. Written from the first-person POV of a stalker as he hunts and captures his next victim, this story ends pretty much exactly how you think it will (and hope it won’t)—but the ride to get there is both horrifying and mesmerizing. When I finished “You,” I very much wanted to curl up under my desk in the dark with my …
So, wow, this is different from anything I’ve read before. This is definitely a 5-star read just for the pure creepiness of it. Our protagonist, or should I say antagonist, because as it turns out, he is a very unreliable narrator, is a worker at bookstore named Joe. He becomes manically obsessed with a girl named Guinevere Beck. He begins to take …
This book has everything I love in a good, creepy thriller. I often feel that the narrator of suspenseful thrillers is a bit too detached from the story, but the second-person narration of this one is absolutely AMAZING.
Joe, the narrator/primary protagonist, is deliciously creepy, and his immediate obsession with Beck after she walks into the …
I’m really into domestic suspense right now — especially ones where a character is manipulative and twisted. So @Nadia recommended this book to me and it totally hit my sweet spot.
Joe is a deliciously creepy narrator who becomes obsessed with this girl, Beck, who comes into his bookstore. He stalks her social media (and let’s be honest, he …
I wouldn’t do anything for a Klondike Bar but I would do some shady shit for some tacos, a margarita and this book on my deck.
4th time through, still the best book ever…
Written in the second person, YOU is an exploration into the madness that lurks in the most (seemingly) upstanding of people. In the age of social media, the main character makes quick work of getting to know his new lover–but cyberstalking and real-life danger soon entwine. Refreshing, unique, and deliciously creepy.
2 stars Audiobook: The narrator was fabulous. After having this book recommended to me for years by so many friends, I gave it a go. I struggled with this one. It went from being monotonous to semi interesting for me. The main character Joe, was too much inner dialog, repetitive and boring. His mantras ticked away at my cares about the book till …
It’s true, I was drawn into the hype of You thanks to the Netflix adaptation, which made me buy the book. How did I not pick this up years ago? It. Is. Incredible. Joe. *Joe*. I didn’t see him as a book boyfriend of the traditional romance books I usually read, but I was so drawn in by his character and the story I couldn’t help but wish him well. …
“If you don’t start with crazy, crazy love, the kind of love that Van Morrison sings about, then you don’t have a shot to go the distance. Love’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
Ahh, what a romantic, lovely sentiment. Worthy of a daily mantra or a morning affirmation to keep love fresh and alive in one’s heart
But…as you could imagine, these …
I’ve been remiss in getting this book off my TBR shelf. After spending a weekend with Caroline Kepnes and signing with her at Colleen Hoover’s Bookworm Box in Texas in 2016, I decided I needed YOU in my life. Tarryn Fisher insisted I would love it, and Caroline was so much fun that weekend, how could I not? I started reading the paperback shortly …
“You” is a fascinating thriller. It’s completely original and stunningly vibrant. I haven’t felt this genuinely scared or creeped out by a book in years – maybe ever. I’m a regular reader of thrillers but this one had me taking breaks in between passages – it’s heavy and realistic. Would recommend.
Couldn’t put it down!! Twisted and disturbing, captivating and a real page turner. This book is excellent and well written. Love getting inside Joe’s head and hearing his thoughts!!
I’m really at a loss for words on how to write up ‘You’ and I think half of it is because I’ve really never read anything quite like it. I didn’t know whether to be horrified, creeped out, amused, aghast. Hell, I didn’t even root for the heroine most of the book. The author did such a number on me that I felt like outside Joe’s obsession for Beck, …
Spectacular novel and beautifully written. The antagonist as protagonist, written in his POV helps this story flow and increases the sense of urgency in the reader.
WOW! holy fucking shit. This was the most brilliant thing I’ve read in a while. This was seriously the most insane crazy book. I can’t even say anything about it without spoiling something. Seriously just read it. Warning this is not a romance. Don’t expect an HEA. But omg. I have to read the second book now.
What a way to start 2020. This book …
