An accidental dog swap unleashes an unexpected love match in this new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Julia London. Carly Kennedy’s life is in a spiral. She is drowning in work, her divorced parents are going through their midlife crises, and somehow Carly’s sister convinces her to foster Baxter–a basset hound rescue with a bad case of the blues. When Carly comes home late … When Carly comes home late from work one day to discover that the dog walker has accidentally switched out Baxter for another perkier, friendlier basset hound, she has reached the end of her leash.
When Max Sheffington finds a depressed male basset hound in place of his cheerful Hazel, he is bewildered. But when cute, fiery Carly arrives on his doorstep, he is intrigued. He was expecting the dog walker, not a pretty woman with firm ideas about dog discipline. And Carly was not expecting a handsome, bespectacled man to be feeding her dog mac and cheese. Baxter is besotted with Hazel, and Carly realizes she may have found the key to her puppy’s happiness. For his sake, she starts to spend more time with Hazel and Max, until she begins to understand the appeal of falling for your polar opposite.

Very entertaining story filled with a touch of eccentricity and and lot of romance. I really enjoyed Carly and her life crisis drama. Her family was also quite crazy pants fun. Max was a wonderful character and when they meet due to an accidental dog exchange sparks fly. More than a nod to living with someone on the spectrum in adulthood and it was very well done.
I absolutely loved this story. I will definitely be reading this again.
Who knew that an accidental dog swap would be life changing? Carly is struggling with work. She needs her few clients to be successful but that’s not happening. They are either needy or crazy or both. She wants to be successful so that she can move to New York and live life in the fast lane. Unfortunately, her family needs her. Her recently divorced parents are out of control and her sister needs help wrangling her children. Her missing beagle is the final straw. When she tracks down Baxter, he’s with a sexy, handsome man who’s letter her dog break all the rules. Max Sheffington is a professor who’s in a rut. He needs someone special in his life. I loved the chemistry between these characters. Sparks fly when they’re together. Her unpredictable family might just derail their new relationship. Her mother is planning to marry Max’s father. I couldn’t believe what Julia London put these characters through. I couldn’t stop reading this book. So much drama. I loved it!
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
Nick and Charlotte’s story is a humorous tale of a mix-up with unexpected consequences in You Lucky Dog by Julia London. Carly Kennedy is already living a crazy, out of control life so when she comes home to find the dog walker switched out her depressed basset hound, Baxter, for a much perkier and friendlier one, she has definitely reached the end of her leash. Max Sheffington is bewildered when he finds a depressed male basset hound instead of his happy Hazel. After a long, chasing tail search, Carly discovers where her poor Baxter was left. When Max finds Carly on his doorstep he was surprised, expecting the dog walker, not a pretty woman with strange ideas about dog training. Carly was not expecting the handsome, bespectacled man to be feeding her dog mac and cheese or being allowed on the couch. The problem is that Baxter is head over heels happy with Hazel, and Carly realizes she may have found the key to her puppy’s happiness. For Baxter’s sake, she starts to spend more time with Hazel and Max, until she begins to understand the appeal of falling for your polar opposite.
Ms. London wrote a wonderful, emotional, humorous story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sizzling chemistry, humorous banter, lots of laughs, and charming secondary characters, besides the dogs, giving Carly and Max a chance at love as well as a future together. I highly recommend You Lucky Dog to other readers.

Cute storyline and great characters. Love the dogs! Started off a little bit odd, but after a few pages made sense. Trying to launch a new career after being fired, Carly comes home to find a imposter dog on her couch chewing up a very expensive pillow! Her dog is missing! Baxter is a depress dog and this dog is definitely not her dog….plus it’s a girl. She tries to get a hold of the dog walker and no response. Things go downhill for Carly, crazy clients, crazy family and the list goes on. In the meanwhile Max, a professor who happens to be a brain scientist, wakes up to a similar situation. Trying to figure out what happen, how he winds up with this sad dog. He has a lot on his mind, trying to get his tenure at the university he works at, Trying to give his widowed dad a break from caring for his autistic brother. I don’t want to giveaway to much, but a very enjoyable, light hearted read.
I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story.
Fun entertaining book! The premise of the book is very cute, I mean two basset hounds get switched after a dog walking incident, great set up right? Max is a nerdy sexy scientist who kind and sweet and funny, easy to fall in love with! Carly is high stressed trying to keep her clients on track and the dog mix up wasn’t in her schedule nor the sexy owner that got her pulse started. The read has humor, feels and cute dog antics. My only issue was that I wished the banter was wittier, it felt a little stiff but that could be attributed to Carly’s slightly high strung personality (not as high strung as the rest of her family!), some of the situations didn’t feel as zany as they could have but were still fun! All in all a good read with a colorful cast of characters!
Loved the dogs!!
This book was solidly ok. Like other reviewers the dog premise drew me in. However Carly quickly became annoying. She is a PR rep and her clients are awful and her attempts to like them are transparent. She is a girl doing something she doesn’t believe in just for a paycheck. She then gets a job she believes is her dream job and predictably, hates it. Max Sheffington is the nerdy sexy professor. His inner dialogue about neuroscience when they first meet is very funny. Unfortunately the plot of the book is overtaken but ridiculous twists. The sleeper character that could have made this story a serious story is Jamie- Maxs adult autistic brother. Navigating a romantic relationship while being a secondary caregiver could have been a good plot line. But this is a romantic comedy, so that line wouldn’t work. The dogs are awesome and the interactions with them make the book. Overall a solid story, easy and light.
I love the premise and the cover of You Lucky Dog by Julia London. Both are so darn cute! The book is a little bit romantic comedy, a little family drama, and the third-person narrative makes for unique romance fiction.
The main characters, Carly and Max, have a few things in common. They both own basset hounds. They both have difficult family situations. Lastly, they have the same dog walker, who has difficulty staying out of trouble with the law. It’s not hard to see where this is going! The basset hounds get mixed up and returned to the wrong owners, and the fun ensues as owners and dogs deal with the mix up amidst their usual life chaos.
I liked Max, and his devotion to his family is admirable. His struggle to balance his family’s needs and his attempt to secure tenure as a neuroscience professor is stressful. Carly is a publicist with big dreams and too-few clients. Her financial issues and difficult parents are not quite as compelling a story to follow. While I found Max and Carly’s romance and banter to be cute, I didn’t feel much chemistry between these very different people. I did not care for the use of third-person POV in the telling of this story. However, I loved, loved, loved Baxter and Hazel, the mixed up basset hounds; they were the stars of the tale.
You Lucky Dog by Julia London …I give this 3 1/2 stars …It was not my favorite ..I loved the dogs Baxter and Hazel…Max and Carly were not as easy to get the feelings. A little too much family action .. I did enjoy Jamie’s part in this story.
ARC received from Netgalley for an honest review
I was hooked by the cover and the dogs in this story, and I wanted to love it.
Unfortunately, I didn’t love it. I did like it, however I did not feel this one at all.
I didn’t really feel any emotion from either Max or Carly. And for most of the time I felt like Carly was just phoning it in and was a doormat for everyone around her.
Baxter and Hazel saved this one for me. I couldn’t help but smile every time they were on the page.
I also felt, from my experience, the topic of autism was dealt with quite well.
