THe Moore sisters are the ones befriending Shay. If you think its too good to be true , it usually is. Shay does not have a suspicious bone in her body. I shake my head.
That’s all I will reveal. You have to read this one for yourself.
The pages fly by, no matter how much I told Shay dont be stupid, she did not listen.
Twists and turns will keep the light on for one more page, make that a chapter.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martins Press for this wild read. It will stay with me for quite awhile.
Shay is waiting for the subway when the girl standing near her, jumps in front of train and commits suicide. That one moment completely changes Shay’s life. As the secrets and lies are revealed, it is quite a wild ride. I couldn’t put this book down and read way past my bedtime. The characters all have something to hide and their secrets are revealed slowly. I really enjoyed this thriller! I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
Written in elegant, exact language, this is a ferociously smart thriller that’s suffused with menace. I highly recommend!
Wow! You Are Not Alone was absolutely outstanding. I think this may be their best book yet, and definitely one of the best thrillers I have read in quite some time. Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen deliver well developed characters and a fantastic story that comes with an unexpected twist at the end. Shay Miller witnesses a woman commit suicide in a subway station, and then suffers from PTSD and can’t stop thinking about what she witnessed that day. This story provides intriguing, fast paced reading, of a book you won’t want to put down. Highly recommended!
Shay is a bit of a loner who just doesn’t quite fit in, so when she witnesses a suicide, she becomes obsessed with the woman’s death. Little does she know that her life, already a bit in shambles, is about to get worse. Enter the Moore sisters, they seem perfect to Shay, and she liked having a pair of sophisticated friends who do so much for her. But she’ll soon see that their kindness doesn’t come free.
I’ve read the duo’s other two books and absolutely adored them, so of course, I jumped at the chance to read this as well, and they did not disappoint. There is only so much I can say about the book without spoiling it, so I’m going to do a bit of gushing and not much else. There is an air of mystery here, what seems to be going on isn’t quite what Shay perceives it to be. The plot is slowly revealed to us over time to piece together a fantastic story of the lengths some people will go to, to delude themselves into thinking that what they’re doing is the right thing. And of course, I need to mention the length at which Shay keeps herself oblivious to something that is clearly too good to be true.
A fantastic plot that keeps you flipping pages, desperate to piece everything together and find out what’s really at play. Forcing myself to put this down to go to bed was a near Herculean task. Another home run from St. Martin’s, thank you for sending this one along!
I had that unsettled, on edge feeling throughout the whole book. Even before I understood there was a reason to feel that way. This is told from multiple views and in three parts. It starts on Shay, though. She’s kind of lonely, and definitely obsessed with statistics, in between jobs and feeling out of place with her roommate situation. She’s kind of easy pickings to be messed with. I won’t say more to not give anything away.
I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read by these two authors. You are Not Alone might be my favorite. The build up of suspense, not to mention the surprises and reveals, and the way it’s put together? This is just what I was looking for.
WOW! I just love the way the co-authors write together. The characters are so well-drawn and multi-dimensional and the plot is fast and smart.
You Are Not Alone is the best book so far by this duo. I was hooked from the first page, and it didn’t let up until the last. This is a true suspense thriller that will make your head spin, but in a good way. The outcome of Shay and why she is chosen by a new group of friends, plus her part (or not) in the suicide she witnesses on the subway platform is intense. It unravels at a small pace but well worth the journey. You Are Not Alone also has a feel of a horror novel that has your guessing whether Shay will be the “final girl”. You won’t figure it all out until the last chapter. I was certainly thrown for a loop.
Crazy mean girls! It took me a little bit to really get into this one, but when I did it was a crazy ride. A nice twist towards the end to bring it together. Shay is a bit of an introvert and a stickler for keeping data, and the fact that she’s suddenly best buds with the “cool kids”, after she witnessed someone commit suicide, gets the ball rolling. Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the ARC
“You Are Not Alone” by: Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
Shay Miller was an isolated and lonely single woman who loved numbers, data, and statistics. Her life revolved around probabilities and opportunities to belong, to be wanted, to feel confident, to be seen and to be admired. Without the self confidence, she constantly hid in the shadows of her charts and graphs. Until…
One day in the subway she witnessed a woman jump into the tracks and kill herself. Intrigued and disturbed by what she saw, she started to look into the woman’s life by going to her apartment, leaving flowers, and even attending her funeral and befriending the woman’s friends. This caught the attention of sisters Cassandra and Jane whom Shay takes advantage of.
In the series of lies told and assumptions, Shay gets caught up in a spiraling secret involving the woman’s death that no one wanted to be a part of.
This was my first thriller read from duo Hendricks and Pekkanen. I loved the storyline and plot twists that kept my attention for sure. The pacing is fast, highly entertaining and I loved it. I felt that the writing was solid and definitely an enjoyable read. I am definitely reading their previous two books in the backlist.
I recommend this read for fans of the duo or for first time readers of their work! This was so enjoyable!!
This is the third psychological thriller from Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen, and it’s my opinion that it was just not as good as the first two. That’s not to say it wasn’t good (hello, 4 stars); just not AS good. The big reveal didn’t feel all that big, and the ending felt a bit rushed. However, it’s a very enjoyable read and 100% worth your time.
Shay Miller witnesses a young woman, about her age, commit suicide by jumping in front of an oncoming subway train. From there she meets sisters Cassandra & Jane Moore, and her life pretty much immediately spirals out of control. Unfortunately there’s not much more I can say re: the plot without ruining the reader’s experience, so here are some fairly vague observations/opinions:
– If you’ve read this author duo’s previous two titles, then you’re familiar with their writing style, and you’ll be happy to know that this style continues in You Are Not Alone. I appreciate that they have a particular style that they stick with.
– I felt like it took far too long for Shay to realize what was happening to her. It also took far too long for any motives to be revealed.
– The cast of women is intriguing. Except for Jody. Jody’s a bitch.
– Sean, the lone male character, is a complete non-committal, whiny afterthought. It’s possible that’s how the authors wanted him to come across. Mission accomplished.
You are not alone: Is it a promise, or a threat?
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Shay Miller, thirty-one years old, lives with Sean, who she secretly loves. Sean has a girlfriend. Shay works for a temp agency, and her life is very ho hum.
Amanda Evinger, twenty-nine, single, a nurse who loves to bake.
Shay and Amanda do not know one another, but one fateful day their paths cross and Shay witnesses a tragedy. Shay has a difficult time overcoming what happened and develops a phobia. In order to grasp and deal with the weight of the tragedy, Shay attends a service where she meets Cassandra & Jane Moore, who are successful, beautiful sisters. Cassandra & Jane, are good friends of Amanda’s. When Shay is asked how she knows Amanda, she isn’t completely honest.
In a short period of time, Shay’s life intertwines with the Moore sisters. Shay’s life isn’t so boring and good things are happening. Shay contributes that to the Moore sisters having saved her. The Moore sisters are everything Shay would like to be, and hopes one day they will love her; as much as, they do Amanda.
Is Shay, the worst possible person, or the best possible person?
This was a fantastic, thrilling read! It’s told from many perspectives with lots of twists and turns. I, highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a good thriller that keeps you guessing.
I received an ARC from NetGalley via St. Martin’s Press and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
That was tight! This book started slow but meticulous. I’m amazed at the authors’ ability to maintain the details so well throughout the book. The build up and then things got tense and started to move as the reader starts to figure it out along with Shay. I felt all the feels where I was supposed to and it turned out to be a doozy of a plot. Kudos to the authors. A psychological thriller well executed.
Glad to have been selected to read an advanced copy.
I’ve been a fan of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen since I read their novel The Wife Between Us as well as their other book An Anonymous Girl. Hendricks and Pekkanen are definitely a force to be reckoned with when it comes to writing. When I was offered a chance to read their new book You Are Not Alone, I didn’t even have to think twice about saying yes!
The plot of You Are Not Alone sounded intriguing. Shay Miller is just existing. Through witnessing a tragic event, Shay meets the Moore sisters – Cassandra and Jane who are extremely glamorous. Shay is beyond thrilled to be friends with these two amazing women. However, things aren’t always what they seem, and this is what puts Shay’s life in immediate danger.
I felt that the world building of You Are Not Alone was done beautifully. The novel takes place in New York, and although I’ve never been, Hendricks and Pekkanen made me feel like I was instantly transported to that setting every time I started reading. The pacing is a bit up and down throughout the book though. However, this wasn’t that fast paced thriller I was expecting it to be. I felt as if there was something missing overall from You Are Not Alone. I felt satiated with Hendricks and Pekkanen’s last two novels, but there was something that felt a bit flat in this new novel. I felt as if the big unpredictable plot twist was also missing. Yes, there are a few plot twists throughout You Are Not Alone, but the actual plot twist didn’t wow me like in the authors’ previous books. Don’t get me wrong, You are Not Alone is not a horrible read. In fact, it is quite interesting. I just felt as if Hendricks and Pekkanen rushed through You Are Not Alone. I will say that I admired all the statistics throughout the book. Hendricks and Pekkanen really did their research for this novel, and it shows.
I felt that some of the characters of You Are Not Alone lacked a bit of depth. The main character, Shay, felt a bit too one dimensional at times especially for the majority of the book. However, towards the end, she does become quite the character, and I enjoyed her tenacity to get to the bottom of what was happening. I did enjoy Cassandra and Jane, and I felt like they were fairly fleshed out, but I would have liked a bit more backstory on them such as how they rose to be such prominent adults. I would have liked to know about how they were able to become the perfect manipulators. I enjoyed the character of Daphne, but I would have liked to get to know her more. I would have also liked to read more about Stacey too. Valerie and Amanda were the only ones who felt the realest. They both seemed pretty fleshed out and realistic. I felt like I could relate to Amanda and her thought process.
Trigger warnings for You Are Not Alone include rape and attempted rape (not graphic), alcohol use, manipulation (including gaslighting), some violence, profanity (although not much), murder and attempted murder, and suicide.
Overall, You Are Not Alone is a decent read. Despite its flaws, the book does have some redeeming qualities such as an interesting plot and a fantastic background when it comes to the statistics mentioned in the book. I would still recommend You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen to those aged 17+ who are fans of psychological thrillers.

(A special thank you to St. Martin’s Press for providing me with an eBook of You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.)
You Are Not Alone is Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen at their very best. The story is creepy and filled with coincidences that aren’t really.
The world of Shay Miller changes drastically when she meets Cassandra and Jane after witnessing something terrible that none of us ever want to experience.
The characters are so interesting and weird, but not – at least not at first. Before long you’ll find yourself second guessing every little thing.
If you like thrillers – psychological or otherwise – this is the book for you. I was riveted and didn’t want it to end, but I did want it to end so I knew what the ending would be.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and authors for approving my request for an ARC. All thoughts in this review are my own.
What a twisted story! It certainly kept me on the edge of my seat! It was fast paced and kept me guessing to the end! Definitely recommend! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy
Oh my gosh! The suspense in this book goes all the way to the very end! The use of the main character’s obsession with statistics is something I really related to. These authors have another 5 star book! I loved everything about it! It definitely kept me guessing and speculating about what was going to happen. I love books like this! Books about twisted sisters are always one of my favorites! Just when I think I’ve got it all figured out there’s another twist! I hope they write many more books because I will buy them all!
I wanted to give this author another chance after the last book I read and I’m glad I did. This author writes a compelling story that has so many twist and turns that when it all unravels you find yourself shaking your head from the levels these women go to. At first I thought Shay was the biggest sucker this side of the Mississippi, slowly but surely she worked her way into my heart and I became her cheerleader. IT’s almost painful feeling that yearning, that desperation from her and yeah the author made that palpable.
It’s a great read that will keep you wondering what could possibly happen next, while at the same time wondering what was going on in Shay’s mind. Bottom line I did enjoy this read and the draw of this author’s devious mind.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, the queens of the psychological suspense thriller, are back with ‘You Are Not Alone,’ which is an intricately plotted novel with surprises aplenty.
Shay Miller feels like she is all alone. Her roommate (and secret crush) has a new girlfriend, she gets laid off from her job, and she is witness to a horrible suicide while waiting for the subway. When she encounters the glamorous sisters, Cassandra and Jane Moore, it seems like her life might finally be back on track. Or has it just become even more derailed?
As one who tends to figure out plot twists way too early in a narrative, I was pleasantly surprised that I did not anticipate all of the surprises in this particular story. I thought that the narrative style (Shay’s chapters are in first person, and the other highlighted characters are in close third person) was particularly effective in slowly ratcheting the suspense of the story as it progressed.
There are many interesting female characters in the story, and while I felt some of them (and their motivations) came across as a little too rote or stereotypical for my taste, I found the core characters of the story to be fascinating.
If you’re already a Hendricks/Pekkanen fan, this novel won’t disappoint. And if you’re new to this writing duo and read this book, you just might find yourself picking up their other two novels, just for good measure.
