Hendricks and Pekkanen have done it again! This is the third of their books that I have read, and I have given each one a five-star rating. But I think “You Are Not Alone” is their best yet.
Masters of the thriller genre, they know how and when to drop hints to the mystery. They keep you guessing and tend to be successful at blindsiding you. I found myself going back and rereading portions to confirm that reveals really did make sense, that I had missed a subtle clue.
The authors really pulled me into the story. In the aftermath of a tragedy, the protagonist Shay, lonely and jobless, enters into a friendship with the Moore sisters. I felt chills as Shay was pulled further and further into their web of deceit. The characters are well developed and likable. I could relate to Shay and admired her strength and determination. I even liked the “villains” to a degree.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves the thriller genre, or even just loves women’s contemporary fiction. This book will make you want to shut out the world until you find how the story unfolds.
Thank you to St. Martins Press for the advance copy.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen always leave you hanging at the end of their books. You sense their heroine will fare well, but they offer you no closure, no certainty. She stands alone, stronger perhaps, but operating with her strengths and weaknesses and no one else’s.
The duo’s newest book follows in that same vein. At the start, Shay is adrift. She doesn’t have a full-time job, her best friend is a new mother, and the guy she loves is with someone else. She is, as the title implies, alone, and that loneliness crushes her. It also causes her to make some judgmental mistakes. For someone who studies data and makes connections, Shay shows a rather remarkable sluggishness when it comes to connecting the dots of her own life.
Until she does, and it happens almost rapid-fire.
You have to make a leap, plot-wise. You have to buy into The Big Reveal and you have to believe it. Otherwise, you’re left with a story that feels like different threads that don’t coalesce into a fabric. I did not believe that moment. It felt forced and fantastical, as if I were watching an episode of All My Children.
WIth Hendricks’ and Pekkanen’s other books (The Wife Between Us and An Anonymous Girl), the plot twists felt organic and, more importantly, plausible. That sense is missing here. The premise is fascinating, really, and many times I wished the Moore sisters were the book’s focal point.
Hendricks’ and Pekkanen’s heroines tend to be imprintable, for lack of a better word. You make of them what you wish. If you need her to be strong, you will find her strength. If you only see weakness and vulnerability, she rewards you. They also tend to be unlikable; you don’t want any of these women to be your friend. Shay wears this lineage well.
I’d love to know what you think of this book. Did it work for you? Did you like Shay? What do you think of the Moore sisters?
Another fabulous book from this incredible writing duo! With new friendships reminiscent of Mean Girls, this story took it to a whole other level.
Shay finds her life changed after simply being in the right place at the wrong time. Deeply affected by the tragedy that she witnessed, she finds the new friendship of the Moore sisters filling a huge hole in her life. Single, with no prospects on the horizon, a dead-end job, and feeling even more isolated at home as her roommate moves forward in his relationship, Shay is desperate for companionship. She finds herself sucking up the sisters’ attention and inclusion in their seemingly glamorous life. Little does she know they aren’t quite who she thinks they are…
A highly recommended read and I can’t wait to see what’s up next!
We follow Shay as she witnessed a suicide. After all she can think about is this woman she saw jump in front of the subway train. She learns who she is and what starts out as her giving condolences turns into her lying to Amanda’s friends.and they hanging out with them. But can they be trusted? As time goes Shay begins to notice the friends know things about her she never told them…how? Why? Can she figure it out before it’s too late and she too loses her life? I really enjoyed this book and was drawn into the characters stories as we learn more about their pasts. Very good read and I would recommend it!
If you enjoy psychological thrillers you should definitely read this book!
I read (and loved) The Wife Between Us and An Anonymous Girl so when I had the opportunity to read the latest book by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen I immediately jumped at the chance. This book did not disappoint. Once again, the plot grabbed my attention right from the start and I immediately liked main character, Shay Miller, while also feeling sorry for her (job issues, lack of a romantic relationship, etc.) Shay is a data-obsessed woman (she keeps a journal with various data-related facts and statistics) who witnesses something horrific. Her being in the wrong place at the wrong time, along with her actions immediately before and after witnessing the tragic event results in a chain reaction that leaves her reeling, and wondering who she can really trust.
Lies, deceit, murder, betrayal, this book has it all. Shay has witnessed a suicide and becomes entwined in the woman’s life. Cassandra and Jane have it all, beauty, brains and charm, but who are they really? Shay is about to find out that all is not as it seems. This book is filled with tension. I was immersed in the pages. The characters are edgy and complex. I was literally holding my breath at the ending. The tension is palpable! One of the best psychological suspense books that I have read! These authors really know how to weave a story that draws you in from the very beginning and takes you on a mesmerizing ride. I could feel the fear and confusion. I was there! I highly recommend this book! Great suspense! Awesome writing! Don’t miss this one!
Great story! Shay is a bit of a lost soul at the start of this book. Lonely, laid off from her job, and the roomie she might love has a girlfriend. She witnesses a tragic suicide which throws her world up-side down. This is a great story. There are many characters and narrative goes back and forth between characters and from the present to the past. I really could not wait to see how the characters would finally intersect for this one and it was great! To say too much would give away the plot, but a worthwhile read!
Very interesting character building. And plot twists.
I would like to thank Macmillan Publishing and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this book.
We all know someone like Shay Miller, we all want to find love but it eludes us. Shay wants to be happy but her work prevents her from doing so, she wants to find her way but her life totally isolates her.
As for the Moonroe sisters, we don’t know anyone like them. They have an unbeatable circle of friends. They have everything they want in life. Shay wants their life and the Moonroe sisters want his.
A book read in one go, so much so that I hooked into the story, so engaging, captivating, addictive, full of suspense and twists and turns with endearing characters.
Shay is yearning for what we all want- a great job, a good place to live and fun friends. Right now she has none of those- her roommate wants her to move out so his girlfriend can move in, she has a boring job and no close friends. Then, she meets the Moore sisters- fashionable, beautiful and with a wonderful circle of friends. Shay would do just about anything to belong to their inner circle and she may get more than she wished for! A fabulous twisted tale!
Again this was an amazing collaboration between this writers duo.
It was actually the first time I noticed the different approach in writing style: parts written in the first-person, making you feel like your in the head of the MC and parts in the third person, like you’re an observer, creating the necessary distance.
This story is captivating and keeps you investigated, revealing clues throughout the whole book, but not enough to puzzle it out. I really loved the psychological game that was played.
Excellent. Clever ending.
The main character, Shay, is obsessed with statistics. I found that to be the most interesting part of the book. This genre is not normally one I would choose, but I was intrigued by the description.
While I found it to be a bit creepy, I felt it also dragged at times and could have been condensed to keep the pace moving.
The writing was very good and I would consider reading another novel by this new to me author.
Terrible
There were too many characters to keep track of as I cruised through the pages of this book. And the two inseparable sisters’ motivation took too long to discover. I am to the point where I am being very picky about my psychological thrillers. I guess I’ve read enough that my preference is for one that really has me gasping in shock. And, unfortunately, this one didn’t quite get there.
There are some twists and turns but it wasn’t mind blowing. So, if you have nothing better to do during the coronavirus, then this is definitely worth picking up. It’s an okay read and not boring.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
3 stars
This book was just okay for me. It dragged on for a good while and some of the story just seemed unnecessary. And while one surprise was shocking, I knew most of what was happening very soon in the book. It does show how much women really need each other. I loved ‘The Other Wife’ but this one just missed the mark with me.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
It’s a good book. Well written and good plot; I just wasn’t as caught up in it as I had hoped to be. I think the motivations of some of the characters was left hidden for too long. You know something is going on behind the scenes, enough to keep reading to find out what, but not enough to fully be compelling. I had too much WHY in my head to get attached to the main character throughout the majority of the book. Like I said, it’s good, just didn’t click for me personally.
Wow! This book makes you question friendships – new and old, in every way. What would you do if you locked eyes with someone as they are about to jump in front of a subway train? How far does someone go on living after that? Readers will answer these questions, the why did she jump, who made her do it, following all the steps to get there. It will be a quick read and you will go without sleep as you race to the finish line. I wouldn’t be surprised if this book is adapted into a screen of some kind. Excellent! Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are amazing, talented writers.
Great book!
These women write the most incredible, detailed, unusual stories! In this latest, Hendricks and Pekkanen have once again provided a glimpse behind the dark curtain of female “friendship” and offered up a thriller that is complex, populated by fabulously detailed characters full of charming menace – even (especially?) when they’re at their most charming and least menacing… The authors have an uncanny knack for dissecting the insecurities that so many of us embody and finding a way to play with those fears and self-doubts until the reader doesn’t know which end is up. It makes for delightful reads that travel a serpentine path toward resolution. There were a couple of twists I did not see coming – which always happens in their books – and the things I did see were still played out so subtly and well that I didn’t mind congratulating myself for noticing them. If you like your thriller-mysteries intricate and thoughtful, a great place to start is with a Hendricks/Pekkanen!
