Love struck me at a young age. Bertie Cooper owned my heart from the second grade right up until the moment I ruined everything. I didn’t deserve her, not after what I did, so I lied and pushed her away. I took the coward’s way out and I broke her heart. Little did I know, I sentenced the rest of my days to an internal prison of hell. I now find myself at a crossroads with the blonde beauty … blonde beauty before me once more. And she still takes my breath away. Life just keeps on torturing me…
I’ve never believed in second chances, but I’d give anything for one with her.

Bertie and Cody were childhood sweethearts, until he left her heartbroken. This is a beautifully written story which is heartbreaking, raw, gritty, sweet, intense, humorous, heart-warming, and a fantastic second chance romance story. I was totally hooked and intrigued from the very beginning, and I look forward to reading more of this talented authors’ work which I highly recommend for all.
“A king who once had it all sits here a broken and shattered man..”
Cody Sterling’s was the story that I was hoping would come next. He’d been a hero, albeit a broken and bitter man hiding behind charm and wit, but a hero none the less when he saved Kate from a fire that would have finished the beating that almost killed her. I just wanted this broken man to have his HEA. I was all in, the emotions were high all the way through and I felt like I couldn’t stop to breathe or take a pee.
Each book in the Yesterday series from HJ Bellus is a complete stand-a-lone with interconnecting characters. If you want to start with this book, you won’t be missing information, just the pleasure of reading the other beautifully written books, and seriously, why would you do that to yourself??
Cody Sterling had loved Roberta (Bertie) Cooper since second grade. His parents were wealthy and he appeared to have it all – except they were absent, and Bertie was his everything. He told his own heartbreak story to Max in Yesterday Is Ours, “Nothing I’m proud of and ain’t much to tell. Was in love hard. She was my world. I was young and dumb and horny. That part hasn’t changed. She pissed me off … I made the biggest mistake of my life. She left town and never returned.” Even as a secondary character in that book, his guilt and loss was palpable, I was intrigued, and I had to know. I was not disappointed.
Since saving Kate in the fire, he’s broken, scarred and in unimaginable pain. His best friends literally force him into a rehabilitation clinic for surgery where he sees the person who still owned his soul.
Dr Roberta Cooper succeeded in her lifelong dream to become a surgeon, and has ended up being the one required to do Cody’s surgery. I cried as I read her POV, as she described her journey that had been difficult at times. Luckily, her friend through college, who’d been there through her break up with Cody, was still very much a supportive force in her life. We all need friends like Nell. Now, having the man who broke her showing up for surgery is a hiccup she doesn’t need or want. She’s not only a surgeon, she’s now a single mother, and engaged to boot!
I absolutely love second chance romances, and HJ Bellus has given Cody one hell of a challenge even though Bertie herself says to him, “You’re going to think I’m crazy, but I swear the universe is pushing us back into each other’s lives.” That may be true, but her fiancée is still very much keen to get married to her.
Yesterday Is Ours, was a great third book in the series that I found hard to put down. A highly recommended 5 Stars.
Cody’s love is stuff fairytales and dreams are made of.
We were left on the edge, scratching our heads at the end of That Was Yesterday, trying to figure out Cody’s story. We knew he saved Kate from the burning house and know he sustained injury but we knew there was more to it…and we were not wrong!
It seems there seems to be one person made perfectly for everyone. However, you wouldn’t think you’d meet that one person in elementary school, but Cody had in Bertie. At least that’s how they both felt until college came and Cody walked away from his heart, and years later he’s still feeling the pain deep in his soul.
The thing is, the world has a funny way of bringing people together. When Roberta (aka Bertie) becomes Cody’s hip surgeon, he feels like he’s getting a second chance. But right before surgery, Roberta reminds Cody she is there to do a job and that is all there is between them, his hope diminishes.
The following chapter are painted in such a colorful and vivid light that I can actually see everything taking place right before me. Will Cody get the second chance he has dreamed of for so long? What happens when the love of his life lives 5 hours from where his life has been for so long? Everything is never easy as we hope when love is involved!
Great book! I love second chance books. Cody and Bertie’s love story goes way back to grammar school. My heart went out to Bertie having to go through such heartbreak in her life. Cody gets lost in life. While trying to find his way he comes across his past. I loved her Cody. She was such a little spit fire. This book shows you that happily ever afters are always possible you just have to want it enough. HJ Bellus always touches such a place in your heart with her writing. Awesome. Enjoy!
Since this series started I have love Cody, but when Cody saved Kate and ended up hurt himself… I was crazy in wanting his HEA!
Yesterday Is Ours is perfect and was way more than I anticipated. The emotions are rolling all throughout this book. I was captivated from the Prologue and could not walk away from this story.
Cody and Bertie’s story is one that readers have been needing and one that I feel makes this series of characters complete. The two before this story were amazing but Yesterday Is Ours is my favorite and honestly the twists and heart beating moments were all well planned and had the desired effect. That being a well built story that enamors the readers.
I don’t want to say anymore because I don’t want to give anything away. You just really need to read this to experience the magic!
H.J. Bellus knows just how to hit me right in the feels and always leaves my in a state of complete awe. Her writing sucks me in and makes me a part of the world she creates every single time.
This series has been one of my all time favorites from the start, but I think Cody and Bertie’s story is the absolute best. Cody had me a swoony mess. He is sweet, secy and I fell head over heals in love with him. Bertie is a strong woman who is just what you hop for in a heroin. The chemistry between these two is off the charts and will leave you fanning yourself.
I loved every second of this amazing second chance romance. This one definitely can be read as a stand alone but I highly recommend you read the others in this series as well. They are all fantastic.
Just had to pick up this one especially knowing the author could and did wring my emotions out to dry then fuel them up again. This one also was gonna be one that shines above all second chances if it happens. Cody and Bertie will give you your breath as you read because you find you are holding it sometimes. You are given a full spectrum of these two which is getting harder to come across in reading. The little girl is also a shining part of this one. The small town setting gives it also the right dynamic. This is one you will eat up from beginning to end knowing you be given another piece of this author also.
