Yeast of Eden is the 4th book in Sarah Fox’s Pancake House Mysteries Although I wish I’d started reading at book #1, the author provides plenty of background so that it’s easily a stand alone read. I will be going back & reading the 1st three books because I enjoyed this book enough to want to know all the details from the beginning.
The title hooked me & the name of the pancake house, The Flip Side, is just so clever. Her descriptions of the food made me wish the Flip Side was real & just down the street so I could go there. The description of the restaurant had me picturing a smaller, cozier version of Cracker Barrel.
This is the only cozy I can think of where the amateur sleuth( Marley McKinney) actually spent her days working & taking car of day to day tasks. I really enjoyed that she didn’t just drop everything else & spend all day sleuthing. Marley seemed very real to me. I loved how she greeted & cared for her pets, Flapjack the cat, & her befriend, Brett’s dog Bentley as soon as she got home. I also liked that Marley supported local artists.
Her part time teen-age waitress, Sienna involved herself in Marley’s sleuthing & I thought she was a great partner to Marley.
I was left with a few questions at the end. What became of certain characters? Is it Tassy they found? Hopefully book 5 will tell us. I don’t know if I missed the clues, but for me the killer was a complete surprise.
This was a different kind of cozy for me. There’s not much humor, & there is a lot of romance. There were times I thought it was a romance novel. The mysteries were good, I just thought there was a little too much romance. I really liked that there were 2 mysteries.to solve. The 2nd one was very sad, but very compelling.
I think cozy fans will enjoy a trip to Wildwood Cove to see Marley at the Flip Side & I look forward to the next book.
I had this book in my library for some time and finally read it, not sure what I waited for, it’s awesome! A fun read with great characters and I had no clue who the murderer was.

Review:
The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional. Marley loves her job, her friends and her boyfriend. Life is good until there is a murder and two of her friends are suspected of being the culprit. She knows she has to solve the case before one of her friends is wrongly accused. I really enjoy the fact that Marley has such good friends and how much they all care about each other.
The writing style flows smoothly and defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and it pulled me in from the beginning, and took me for a great adventurous ride.
The mystery was well plotted and had enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. I had an inkling about the killer but I was not sure until the reveal.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This whole series is great and you cannot go wrong reading these books.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Yeast of Eden by Sarah Fox is the fourth tale in A Pancake House Mystery series. Marley McKinney owns The Flip Side in Wildwood Cove. The pompous Wally Fowler recently returned to town and is opening Wally’s Waffle Kingdom in a week which will put it in direct competition to The Flip Side. Wally visits The Flip Side and invites Marley along with her chef, Ivan Kaminski to a nitrogen ice cream demonstration that evening. Ivan gets upset when Wally insults his culinary expertise. That evening, Marley attends ladies’ night at the hardware enjoying the sales, giveaways and delicious treats. She encounters Lisa Morales who is upset at Wally’s return to town. Wally got Lisa’s brother, Carlos hooked on drugs years ago and is responsible for the death of another woman. Marley has yet to meet a person who likes Wally Fowler. On her way home, Marley walks by the Waffle Kingdom and notices that the tires on Wally’s van have been slashed. Marley goes into tell Wally about the incident and encounters Ivan walking out of the kitchen where Wally has cooked up his last waffle. Sheriff Georgeson focuses his investigation on Lisa and Ivan since they both had reason to harm Wally. Marley needs to whip together the clues and serve up the killer.
Yeast of Eden is a light-hearted cozy mystery. New readers to A Pancake House Mystery will have no problem delving into Yeast of Eden. There are friendly characters including the regulars who enjoy breakfast at The Flip Side every morning. The Flip Side is set in the small town of Wildwood Cove where the hardware store has a ladies’ night each month. With the giveaway, discounts and yummy treats, the woman of the town cannot help but drop in. There are two intertwining mysteries in Yeast of Eden. We have the death of obnoxious Wally Fowler and an older case. After stumbling upon some journals in an old trunk, Marley finds herself embroiled in another mystery. I liked how they tied together. I just wish they had been more of a challenge to solve. I am glad that Marley is happy with her boyfriend, Brett Collins. But must we have so much gushing and “what will I do without him” when Brett rushes out of town when his father falls ill. It was over-the-top sickly sweet (what happened the Marley in the first book). The romantic element needs to be dialed down a few notches (this is a cozy mystery, not a romance novel). I like that we get to experience real moments with Brett when his father is rushed to the hospital. There are recipes for Candy Cane Pancakes, Gingerbread Crepes, Eggnog Whipped Cream and French Toast at the end of the book. I am giving Yeast of Eden 3 out of 5 stars. Sarah Fox has whisked together family, friendship, romance, breakfast delicacies and murder into the jaunty and airy cozy mystery-Yeast of Eden.
In this story you will find an interesting, cozy mystery, full of twists and the right amount of mystery. The characters are well rounded and likable. The writing is great and entertaining. I would recommend it to all lovers of murder mysteries and cozy murders everywhere. It is a clean and a nice work of art.
Marley McKinney is the owner of the only breakfast Pancake shop in Wildwood Cove, that is until Wally Fowler, the Waffle King, returns to town to be her competitor. The problems start when the king is found dead and Marley’s best friends are on the list of suspected murderers.
We get to see a bit, just a bit, more of Wildwood Cove’s business district. Marley steps in when Ivan is a suspect in a former local’s death. That former local, Wally, is hated by many so there’s plenty of suspects.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
3.5 out of 5
This was another good story in the series. I like the characters and the setting.
Liked it
Fun series.
very good
The waffle king comes into town and thinks that he’ll run the Pancake house out of business. But Marley and her chef have a great following. But when the waffle king ends up in a horrible death, Marley knows that she has to help save her best friend from being arrested for a murder she didn’t commit.
Another great series that I love reading. Just the recipes alone and thinking about them make me hungry. Read from the first book and you too will become a lover of great flavored pancakes.
Really entertaining, warm and cozy story with some cold hearted twists and turns. Good for a little light relief if you are into cold mysteries normally.
Liked the book. Would like to see a little more action. Otherwise, it was a good read.

A Highly Recommended Read!!
I volunteered to read Yeast of Eden. Thanks to
Net Gallery and Alibi for the opportunity. My
opinion is my own.
This is a cute, easy-to-read series. Marley and her friends are nice, kind characters. I have to like the characters in order to enjoy the book. Marley owns a pancake house and competition has just moved in. Wally is opening a waffle restaurant and wants to run Marley out of business. Marley doesn’t really like Wally, but she hardly knows him. However, there are lots of other people in the town that hate his guts. So when Wally turns up dead, there are lots of suspects, including Marley’s Chef Ivan and her best friend Lisa. Marley decides she must investigate before either of them is arrested. While investigating Wally’s death, Marley has her own little mystery going. A distant relative, had a sister disappear under suspicious circumstances and another young girl was assumed killed about the same time. Marley chances on some journals of her missing ancestor.
I enjoyed both mysteries and I like how they wrapped up. It wasn’t until the end that I figured out who killed Wally and I was surprised by the ending to the missing girl.
The was an Advanced Reader Copy supplied by NetGalley. The review is all my own.
Yeast Of Eden is the fourth book in the Pancake House Mystery series by Sarah Fox. I’m a long time fan of this series I was thrilled to read it.
The book is fast paced, well written with plenty of plot twists and red herrings to keep you guessing as to the motive and the murderer.
One of the things I enjoyed most about Yeast of Eden was the secondary mystery. I was as caught up in it as I was the primary one!
I always enjoy a visit to Wildwood Cove, and was sad to see this one come to an end! Already looking forward to the next book to see what’s in store for Marley and company!
Sarah Fox’s Yeast of Eden is the charming fourth book in her Pancake House series, and she’s created the perfect balance of cozy, mystery, romance, Christmas, and recipes. Protagonist Marley investigates two completely separate mysteries – one with ties to her family, the other with ties to her business – while her relationship with boyfriend Brett continues to progress, and she stands by his side while he deals with a family crisis. Even though it’s the fourth in the series, Yeast of Eden works perfectly well as a standalone for those who haven’t read the other three books (including me, who’d only previously read the first), and it’s highly recommended for cozy mystery lovers! 5 stars!
Wally Fowler is in town to put some competition on Marley McKinney and her pancake house, The Flip Side. Wally thinks his Waffle King place will be better, and a little competition is a good thing right? Right! Until he is found dead in his state of the art kitchen. Did Marley do it? Can she prove she didn’t kill anyone? You will have to read the book to find out …… and bonus! there are recipes in the book too!!! I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from the publishers.
Loved this latest installment in the Pancake House mysteries! Marley investigates after her friend, Lisa, and chef, Ivan, are suspects in the murder of a man who is opening a waffle restaurant. The man used to be a local and caused a lot of trouble. Sienna helps Marley in the investigation. I love the characters, the town, and the delicious recipes in this series. I would love to visit Wildwood Cove and eat at the Flip Side. I love Marley and Brett together and hope they get married some day. Can’t wait to read more books in this terrific series!!!
YEAST OF EDEN is the fourth book in the popular Pancake House Mystery series but the first I have had the opportunity to read. I do not know why I have waited so long to give the series a try, but I am glad I did. It can be read as a standalone, and, with its beautiful Washington setting, likable characters, and intriguing mystery, it is a delightful cozy read.
Protagonist Marley, the proprietor of the local breakfast spot, is confident that her restaurant will hold its own against Wally Fowler, the self proclaimed Waffle King. Pompous, arrogant, and not well liked, this prodigal son of Wildwood Cove is a testy thorn in Marley’s side. However, when Marley’s chef Ivan finds Wally dead, Marley does her best to unmask the real killer and save her friends, the prime suspects.
There are actually two mysteries within the pages of YEAST OF EDEN, and they work well together to make a cohesive whodunit. Marley is a smart amateur sleuth, ever mindful of not accusing suspects of anything without proof. She is quick to put the pieces of the puzzle together and handles herself in a sensible way, not falling under the “too stupid to live” category at all, when faced with danger. I was blindsided by the killer’s identity, making the climax all the better. The characters are well developed and realistic. I enjoyed getting to know them and especially like Marley, Brett, and Ivan. The pace of the writing is good and the style just right.
I highly recommend YEAST OF EDEN.
I received an e-ARC of this title from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
