#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts–Year One is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives… It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything … quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed–and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.
Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river–or in the ones you know and love the most.
As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.
In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.
The end has come. The beginning comes next.

It was very different but very riveting. I love her characters.
Can’t wait for sequel.
Nora Roberts does not disappoint, she creates believable characters and another great story. Looking forward to the next book!
I normally read books on planes and have liked this author because her books have kept me engaged. This book had too many characters to follow with an ending letting you know how one character ended up but not knowing what happened to the other characters. I didn’t mind the super powers that were introduced in the book and the concept that people would use these powers for good or evil. The book was too long. There will probably be many books to follow to finish this story but I will not be reading them.
Nora Roberts has earned her status as a world class novelist. This book was based on two tropes. A doomsday virus and a miracle child who will save the world. Despite both of these tropes being on the overused side, Ms. Roberts made the book work.
An interesting take on the post-apocalyptic tale. Can’t say wonderful characters, but characters of interest and that you care about.
Great book. Could not put down – very original. Can’t wait for the second book to come out.
Nora Roberts has always been a favorite of mine, but this book absolutely stunned me. It is powerful, caught at my emotions, yet retained the charm of her characters – something that brings me back to her stories time and time again. Read this soon – the sequel is due in December, and I for one can’t wait. Do not miss this novel!!
Loved it, couldn’t put it down. More like didn’t want to put it down. What a story.
Just okay.
This is a glorious book….. I loved everything about it. I can’t wait for the next one! Nora Roberts has out done herself again.
I love end-of-the-world books and this is one of the better ones. Nora Roberts really knows how to flesh out her characters so that you feel their fear, pain, and best of all their joy at being alive. The story line incorporates magic in a way that is believable. My one pet peeve is the use of the word magick. I just don’t think the story needs that artifice and every time I came to it I cringed.
Looking forward to Book 2
I liked this book. Not your typical Nora book. It starts a little slow, but after a few chapters I was hooked. Looking forward to the second book.
Nora Roberts has once again put a new twist in her writing. I can’t wait to read the next one.
Great read – I was sorry when I finished it. Hope there’s a sequel!
I enjoyed it but found it fairly derivative of The Stand.
Great new book from Nora Robert’s, unlike any thing she’s done. Post apocalyptic, mystery, romance, adventure all mixed together. Loved it.
Thought provoking. Frightening.
Nora Roberts’ books all tend to kinda of be the same once you’ve read enough of them. I can say it’s original because it reminds me of the Walking Dead minus the zombies and with magic. It’s a post apocalyptic world with a Nora Roberts twist. It’s very interesting and entertaining so I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment.
