#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts–Year One is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives… It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything … quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed–and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.
Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river–or in the ones you know and love the most.
As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.
In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.
The end has come. The beginning comes next.

Dystopian fantasy — first book in the “Chronicles of the One” series.
I’m a Nora Robert’s and JD Robb fan. This one missed the mark for me. I like sci fi stories but this just didnt interest me enough to get the next in the series. Dragged on and too much detail in some parts. Good character development but just too slow for me.
I absolutely love “Year One” by Nora Roberts. I’ve read it 7 times, as well as Book 2, “Of Blood and Bone”. It is Nora Roberts at her very best. And no sex scenes. Love that. I will probably start reading it an 8th time soon. Just a great book!
Not my usual read but it did suck me.
One of the few Nora Roberts books that didn’t grab me and suck me in. It started strong but lagged in places which made it hard to come back to. I am normally a huge fan so I was shocked by not loving this book.
Great book that I highly recommend. Well-written with great characters. Heart-breaking events (because readers get sucked in as if they’re part of the cast). Reminds me of The Stand by Stephen King, similar story line which was a bit disconcerting, but where the story went was quite different. So if you like edge of your seat stories, with a touch of romance, lots of scary violence, throw in some surreal abilities then this book is for you! It is a cliffhanger, part of a trilogy. The second book is out, third is due to be released in November 2019.
This is Nora at the top of her game. Excellent read!
This was a fabulous book. I read it in days and moved on to the next book in the series. Now, I’m left waiting for the release of the next installment. Sigh.
I’m obsessed with apocalypse fiction – which should surprise no one who’s known me or been following me for a while. So, when Nora Roberts came out with an apocalypse book, I had to read it. And I was impressed. Take a look at my full review on my website. http://patlewin.com/2018/02/832/
Couldn’t put it down! Absolutely loved this book
This book kept me enthralled from beginning to end. I couldn’t put it down. Of course, I find that all Nora Roberts’ books are that way for me. She really knows how to write a page turner. This book is set in a world that is currently going through what I suppose could be considered an apocalypse. A terrible disease wipes out an enormous amount of the population, leaving the human race to fend for themselves. It also brings out the “magic” in certain people, whether it be light or dark magic seems to be up to the individual. Technology falls and some begin to gather together to form small communities, starting over as only people with faith in humanity can. One woman escapes death to give birth to The One. She will be humanity’s hope, she will bring the light against the dark, in her thirteenth year she will fight the dark ones to bring peace to the world.
Yes, this is one of Roberts’ more fanciful trilogies, but I can’t wait for the next book.
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a Nora Roberts book but my favorites were always the books about magicks. I began this series doing an audio read and thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrator did wonderfully.
The characters were so engaging and their independent stories made them so easy to connect with. When their lives covered the connections grew. I fell so hard for these characters and I’ll tell you, at one point I was absolutely cursing the author. Even now that I’ve started book two, I’m still devastated by what occurred.
This post-apocalyptic world is nothing like the world before the doom stole billions of lives. Survivors and the uncanny all trying to survive together. All looking for a home, a community. Hope. But there is still evil and dark magic. And it seems to destroy that hope, that light.
I’m so glad I found this book. It brings me back to my favorite style of writing by Nora Roberts.
I really enjoyed this book, but the plot either made me turn pages as fast as I could or it sort of bogged down so that I had ups and downs in the story. And it wasn’t because of action vs. down time. I liked the scenes where survivors were trying to start over after the apocalypse as much as I liked the scenes with the horror of the monsters it created. And Nora Roberts does gruesome really well. Every once in a while, though, I thought the book got a tad preachy and tried too hard to make a point. And it was a bit predictable. All in all, I think more tightening would have made the book read faster, but the idea of a plague brought on by magic was an interesting premise, and I liked the concept that the introduction of magic created good and evil Uncanny gifted people, as well as good and evil mortals. I’m curious where the story goes next. For me, a good read.
Great book
When i first started to read this, i thought “oh my goodness, this is making me so depressed i do NOT want to read this anymore”, but i am so glad i kept going! It gets incredibly interesting! I 100% sugest this!
A great trilogy
Easy read. Apocalyptic and about adaption and tolerance. An introduction to what seems to be, a good series in the making. Not a new concept but entertaining. I enjoyed the ending which will lead into the next book. The next book will either make or break this series, so we will see.
Magickal Moments by Nora Roberts:
Lots of characters in this melee of good versus evil. Some of the magick is actually beyond magic, but delightful all the same. All the extremes of the human soul are stretched beyond their usual barriers, and the reader must tag along with this. Not a perfect read, for me, but plenty of interest throughout, even if the characters are magically over the top.
Is the apocalypse nigh? Read on to find out.
A wonderful new series by my favorite author! She has managed to turn a post apocalyptic world into one I enjoy spending time in, a feat I thought impossible. As always, her characters jump from the page to inhabit your life.
Nora Roberts continues to entertain. The premise is one that is intriguing as well as frightening. It really makes one think about what we all are capable of both bad and good. Her characters become real.
