#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts–Year One is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives… It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything … quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed–and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.
Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river–or in the ones you know and love the most.
As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.
In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.
The end has come. The beginning comes next.

Year one reminded me of Stephen King’s The Stand. The time of turmoil begins with a sickness that causes some people to die and a mixed group of good and evil to survive only to face the future of a land divided. Book 1 covers the beginning of the illness and the lives of the groups all struggling to either create a better place or to destroy it. Slowly those with the propensity for evil take over New York City which causes some to flee to what they hope will mean safety. Max and Lana have powers, referred to as magick that they recently began trying to grow before the sickness, a reporter and intern, a doctor and paramedic, a mother with babies, and a tech person are all forced separately to leave their homes in New York in the hope of finding other survivors. During their travels many including these main characters join together and eventually paths cross in a town aptly named New Hope. Though for me it was like reading a newer version of the Stand I still enjoyed the book and look forward to Book 2.
Very different for Nora Roberts, darker-magical-but Nora at her best. Can’t wait for #2 in the series !
Ok I read the book because first I loved the “The Stand” by Steven King and I also love Nora Roberts. I was not dissappointed in this book. I read the book in less then 24 hours with still doing all the other things in my life- If you are looking for a romance from this Nora Roberts book you may not like this one. I personally loved this book. You will like that as we get knocked down we still get up and keep going.
Roberts never disappoints. Book two won’t come soon enough
I love Nora Roberts and have every one of her books. This new series is going to be great…
Vintage Nora. Never disappoints. Looking forward to the next book. I
I love doomsday stories. This was a real page turner. Although tragic things happen, the strength ofthe main character gives it hope. Can’t wzit for a sequel. Paranormal powerx, fairies and more!
Nora Roberts has never written a book that I didn’t like. She’s absolutely amazing!
I have read every book Nora Roberts has ever written, including the In Death series written as J.D. Robb. I couldn’t wait for this new series to start, since I read that she was moving down a different path then her usual. As expected, Nora has hit a home run. I can’t wait for book 2 of the Chronicles of The One trilogy.
This book made me read at weird times for me. I love Nora Roberts and have all her trilogies. It’s unfortunate I have to wait so long for book two!!!!!
Great read, can’t wait for the next in the series!
I’m already waiting for the next book so I can continue finding out what happens next. I had to read this in one sitting. Could not put it down!
Too dark!
Another Nora Robert’s semi spooky book.
The theme might be the same as a few others in her mystical style series, but I don’t care.
I love her books of all kinds. Once I start, I have to finish. 2AM is not out of possible finish time.
Terrifying story that grabs your interest from the first page.I love all of Nora Roberts books and this one will not disappoint.
