The mega-talented creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder chronicles how saying YES for one year changed her life―and how it can change yours, too. With three hit shows on television and three children at home, the uber-talented Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say NO when an unexpected invitation arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking … Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No.
And there was the side-benefit of saying No for an introvert like Shonda: nothing new to fear.
Then Shonda’s sister laid down a challenge: just for one year, try to say YES to the unexpected invitations that come your way. Shonda reluctantly agreed―and the result was nothing short of transformative. In Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes chronicles the powerful impact saying yes had on every aspect of her life―and how we can all change our lives with one little word. Yes.

The Year of Yes is one of my favorite books of all time. I laughed, smiled, and found so many joyful moments in this book. She writes with so much fun and enjoyment that you as a reader enjoy the book too. There are lots of touching moments, professional challenges, and personal growth. The Year of yes is empowering and freeing. She shares lots of private moments, speeches, and self-reflection. There is so much strength, candor, and love in each chapter that I smiled, laughed out loud and felt like I was a part of Ms. Rhime’s year.
Over the year, you see her open her heart, mind, and soul to release fear, stress, weight, and insecurity. She trades bad habits, comfortable choices, and “No” for strength, more life enjoyment, profound self-love, clearer discernment, and self-empowerment. She opens her world up to possibility and takes the reader on a beautiful ride. You cannot help but be filled with love, joy, and happiness for her and her family. You will enjoy this honest and beautifully written book of personal insight.
Starts really strong, tapers off towards the end. Overall above average. She is almost painfully honest in this book. She really let’s it all out.
The author is highly entertaining as she shares her self-impowering views.
It has been a last nog time since I read this, but it told of. A time in our history I didn’t know about.
I’ve been into self-help books lately but none have really got me going since “You are a Bad***”. Let me tell you, this is almost like a biography of Shonda, but it is SO uplifting and been helpful in my own life. I’m now saying YES to more and being my own, happy person.
If you need a kick in the patootie, this is it.
A unexpected insight into the life of Ms Rhimes. As an extrodarinarily successful woman, I was amazed to see she suffered from the human frailties ascribed to us mere mortals. A very inspiring read for those of us that say no.
I have to admit, my expectations for Year of Yes might have been too high. Shonda Rhimes is a BRILLIANT TV writer. And the book wasn’t bad by any means, I just expected more from it. By the end of it, I was genuinely happy for the self growth she experienced, but as a reader I didn’t feel like I walked away with any amazing insights that I couldn’t have surmised from the title (saying “yes” to things is good). That being said, I think fans of her shows will really get a kick out of the behind-the-scenes tidbits she shares. The woman is a powerhouse. I don’t know how she finds the energy to accomplish all that she does.
I had a hard time reading this book. Infact I am not sure why I didn’t just stop reading it all together. But it took me 4 months to read when I usually read a book in under a week. First the book was not at all what I thought it would be and second could she just get to a point. I love the cover!
This was my first ever non-fiction #2MinBookReview, and I got a little carried away…over three minutes worth. So here’s your two-minute book review, NOW with 50% more review! I would really love it if Shonda would be my best friend, because while we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything, she gets what it means to be a creative working mom better than almost anyone. Great insight into Shonda Rhimes and what she did in her year of yes!
Interesting and unique tale for a novel.
