Enter the world of the Others in the first novel in New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop’s thrilling fantasy series: a place where unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—rule the Earth and prey on the human race.As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her … curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.
Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

She’s done it again! I’ve read nearly every book by Anne Bishop, and she continues to write the most vivid and unique worlds. Can’t wait to finish the series and see what she comes up with next.
Written in Red is the first book in the Others series and this was just a great way to start off a new series. I was transfixed by this story. I’ve never read anything quite like this and I just absolutely couldn’t get enough of it. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
There are a certain number of books I read multiple times and by the time I was one-third through it, I knew this book would join their ranks. A very original take on a very different world of werewolves and vampires, it has humor, adventure and suspense. The whole series has been a very welcome addition to my library. Anne Bishop’s other books are readable but this is Bishop at her best.
Intriguing world with diverse characters that keep you reading.
a series that I have reread several times. Original world building with memorable characters. I loved them all!
Four and a half stars, with that half star docked only because of a handful of brief but ridiculously cheesy scenes that pop up now and again. Otherwise, I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would.
Honestly, I was expecting another supernatural romanceish young adult novel with Ordinary Teen Outcast Who Suddenly Is, Like, This Super Special Magical Prophet/Princess/Sorcerer rescued by That Hot Boy She’s Always Had A Crush On and/or Her Best Friend Forever Who She Never Saw That Way who in reality is That Sexy Werewolf/Vampire/Fae Guy who ends up rescuing her from Unforseen Evil Trying To Kill Her kind of plot.
Luckily for all of us – myself especially – my assumption ended up being very wrong, and Written In Red turned out to be a rather refreshing modern twist and mesh of all those Bump in the Night classic monster movies. And, ok, yes, The Prophet Who Loved Them. But it’s not in an annoying cliché sort of way that has gotten so tired and overused the last decade or two, I swear!
Loved this book and can’t wait to read more in this series!
Love the whole series.
I can not say enough about the series! Every single book in this series has become a new favorite. The amazing world building is so realistic I kept trying to match Bishop’s world to the real one! I love her take on shifters, which for me is the most impressive part. A series I plan to reread again and again!
Love the book. One of the best I have read this year. Definitely an original idea. I could not stop reading, so much I bought the rest of the series.
A real fun read set in a different world. The story line is very interesting and keeps you turning pages.
Creates a world and draws you in
I lost count of how many times I’ve read this book. I’ve read it in ebook and I listened to the Audiobook. And every time I’ve read I rediscover the feelings of reading it for the first time. Anne Bishop leads us on journey of self-discovery with Meg Corbyn and the all the characters at The Lakeside Courtyard: Meg, Simon, Sam, Vlad, Tessa, Henry and the human pack. As I got to the end of this book I was already searching for the second one and I had wait impatiently for the publication of the next book. The series is now complete.
Love this new world of Others and Cassandra sangue. Meg is such a strong character and is perfect march for the leader of the courtyard. Read all of the series and can’t wait for more.
loved this book
I absolutely love this book. This book made me want to read the whole series, which I did. The series I have reread and will continue to reread. I love it.
Excellent world building
I seldom come across a book these days that capture my attention so completely I don’t even consider checking social media or other distractions while I read. This is one of such rare books, and it deserves five stars for that alone. I loved the world, the idea of humans being in the minority; and the characters, how alien the others were, and how the author didn’t try to make them nicer to make them appealing. The story was fairly straightforward, the good guys were good and bad guys bad, and the romance, such as it was, was low-key and will likely develop throughout the series. Luckily for me, I’m late-comer to this series, so I have several books to look forward to already.
I had to reread the introduction of this world and review the maps after I started the first chapter. After that I fell in love with the story. The characters are multi-dimensional which adds to the storyline. Some parts are just humorous. The ending was not a cliffhanger, but I immediately read the next book in the series. Looking forward to the next book. Great Series!
Engrossing to the last page! Looking for more by this author.
