I think this is the most intense novel of this series. Here we finally get to really meet Garrick Coalwater. Garrick is gone on Kent’s governess. Honora has secrets that she can’t reveal. The two characters are intense and the chemistry between them is undeniable. The two are tricked into marriage by Garrick’s cousin and that’s when things really heat up. I loved this story and the intensity of the drama and the chemistry between these two.
This latest addition to Deborah Wilson’s Valiant Love series is wonderful. Garrick and Nora are my favorite couple and when you add in Nora’s daughter, you have a true love story!
Deborah Wilson wraps her words around your heart and you become enthralled with “will these characters have a HEA?” and “oh my gosh, how will they overcome this?”. Consequently, when you sit down to read this book and her others, make sure you have a good chunk of time because you don’t want to put it down until the last word, until you know these characters are happy.
This book starts with Lady Ebba Blanc, telling her parents she was chosen to play the role of Lady Macbeth. With her father telling her she could not be an actress. Then they made a deal if she could find a woman to marry her cousin Garrick and the woman had to love him she could play Lady Macbeth. Oh how evil she was in making sure that her cousin married a woman he loved, and she loved him. Lady Honora Baxter snuck out one night and went to Covent Garden’s where she bought a double barrel pistol this was behind the brothel which Garrick; Viscount Coalwater spent all of his nights. Then she had a problem and he came along Garrick that is and got her into a hackney cab so that she can go home. Garrick was one of the lost Lords he had been the first to be kidnapped and had been beaten by Mr. Goody and it’s been four years in chains because of Mr. Goody. He decided to tell the other lost Lords what Lady Nora had done and then try to find out what the problem was though they did not know she bought a gun. She refused to tell them anything that was going on she kept telling them she could take care of it herself. To find out what the major problems were for both Lady Nora and Lord Garrick you have to read the book. It’s a very good book…
Dark Side
Man this series is getting to me. Each book is getting better and better. Garrick story is not your normal romance. He is one of the Lost Lords having been held the longest has made his ability to speak worse than before his capture.
At no time in this story do you feela huge amount of pity for the character because even though he is mostly silent he still gets his point across.
Nora is a woman of secrets and she is not willing to shae them out of misguide notice of protecting the people she cares about.
Secrets are what brings them together but also may tear them apart. Misunderstandings and anger will affect all around them.
This is such a great series I cannot help but review the book after reading. This reader has read and reviewed this book without obligation to the author.
As with all the books in this series, this book was very well told. A true love story between Garrick, one of the Lost Lords, and Nora, a widower with a daughter, Miriam. This story is filled with secrets, intrigue, mystery, and twists and turns that you will not see coming. And of course, there is the usual angst-filled love brewing throughout the book. This is a clean romance with love scenes fading out behind closed doors. However, we the readers were given the details that led up to that point and could very well imagine what was happening. It also leaves one breathless and falling in love with Ms Wilson’s characters. Now that the end of this tale has been told of Garrick, the second to last Lost Lord, we have only Clive left to tell his tale. I’m anxiously anticipating his story. If you haven’t started reading this series then you are truly missing out. I highly recommend reading it.
This has been a great series & I have enjoyed the stories & wonderful characters Ms. Wilson has created for our entertainment. Garrick Amdon, Viscount Coalwater was a mute & was the Lord held longest in captivity after being kidnapped when he was 16 yrs old. & he has suffered the most life altering mental scars from Mr. Goody. Lady Honora Baxter is masquerading as a governess to protect her & her 10 yr. old daughter Miriam from past dangers she experienced.
The growing feelings between Garrick & Nora led them through danger, mystery, trust issues, intrigue, romance love & a vow to protect. I was gifted this ARC to read & I have volunteered to happily give you my honest opinion – you won’t be disappointed!
I am loving the Lost Lords series. The main focus in this book is Garrick Amdon, Viscount of Coalwater. He is misunderstood by most and understood by few. He gets by with sign language and few words. He is fluent when in a calm setting and when trust is established. Lady Honora Baxter and her ten-year-old daughter Miriam were introduced in a previous book. Mystery enshrouded her. In this book a couple of things happen. The attraction between Coalwater and Nora get a kick in the pants forward, Nora’s brother, Lord Meriweather Holden, Earl of Thinbrook, appears in her life after a decade. She fears Meri is guilty of some heinous crimes. She wants no part of it and endangers herself to procure a weapon to defend herself and Miriam. Coalwater is onto her but she refuses to divulge what is going on. All the Lords come together but Nora refuses to open up. In the romance department things between Nora and Coalwater escalate, Meri is encroaching into Nora’s life and she is afraid something bad is going to happen and Coalwater has been on a singular mission to uncover the identities of original Lords that setup their kidnapping and imprisonment. This book is full of action, intrigue, mystery, danger and romance. A must read. You will not be disappointed.
“The dull sword of occupation can never cut through the vibrant threads of love that bind two souls.”
Lady Honora ‘Nora’ Baxter and her daughter, 10 year old Miriam. Nora is the governess of Rick’s nephew George. However, she has a secret and if comes out…
Garrick Amdon Viscount of Coalwater, a man with a speech disability that he chooses to hide by not speaking. His primary way of communication is by manual alphabet and his servant Andreas, who had been teaching Garrick’s friends how to use it.
This is their story. Both have been in other stories of the Lost Lords. Garrick was held the longest and was still being affected by the trauma. His only focus is still revenge.
Can two broken people find love? Better, can they relearn trust? Most of the Lost Lords have had trouble trusting even themselves let alone others. I really liked this book. Deborah Wilson hasn’t disappointed me yet. Despite the traumatic foundations, each victim seems to become a survivor with the help of love. This story is no different. Highly recommended 5/5
Mixed Feelings 3.5*
Things I liked: the character of Nora and the pace of the book. The story flowed well and it was nice to catch up with characters from previous books (though this can be read as a standalone if you have not read the others in this series). The romance between Garrick and Nora was believable.
Things I didn’t like: I thought the darker side of Garrick was rather snake like (slithery and underhanded) and I didn’t understand why he couldn’t have tried an alternative way to enact retribution. I was confused as to whether Meri wanted Garrick dead and whether he was punished or not (end of the final chapter seemed to say one thing and the epilogue another). I was also distracted by the typos.
Eugene (Gene) and Lacey are perfect examples of why you should never assume what someone else is thinking or means. I was never totally convinced that Gene was incorrect thinking that Lacey might have brushed him off in preference to Russ. Their interaction was fun and I found their reaction to the hurricane and the aftermath believable. I enjoyed this book.
The Lost Lords, having survived a horrendous kidnapping some years previously, are slowly rebuilding their lives and their families. Garrick, Viscount of Coalwater has always been an oddity in that due to traumatic events in his early years, he has become mute. He has found ways around his problem, but his silence does as much to put fear into evil-minded people as his deeds. Lady Nora is hiding out as a governess, but when her protective cover is removed she realises that she has to take matters into her own hands. Doing so brings her face to face with Garrick in circumstances difficult to explain. The past has also come back to haunt her and fear becomes the motivating factor in her life. Garrick will do whatever it takes to keep Nora and her young daughter safe, but he is guarding his own secrets, making it difficult for Nora to trust him. This novel has darker elements to it bringing to the fore not only the underbelly of the seedier side of life in that era but also the effect of horrendous events on the life of an impressionable young person. This book is part of a series and the characters do overlap, however, the story is a standalone and comes to a very satisfactory conclusion.
This is one of the great series of the Lost Lords; Viscount Coalwater has been busy indeed since his freedom from the kidnappers exacting severest justice, in secret, one at a time, only two left of the ten men responsible. He was the first taken and held for five years, the youngest at fifteen years old, and perhaps suffered the most! Although he is not deaf, he has a speech handicap that leaves him unable to speak. Years later, Lady Honora has learned sign language along with his friends and their wives and is able to communicate with him. The questions about her back story are at last the center of what becomes a love story between these two and I loved the important role her ten year old daughter played in it! Lots of action, thrilling dangers, slow understanding and trickery by relatives of the lovers, and Coalwater’s intelligent detective work make this a great story! On top of that we keep up with the other Lost Lords and their families! This is a really good book with a HEA, even better if you’ve read the other stories. I volunteered this review of an ARC.
Another wonderful story by Deborah Wilson in her Valiant Love Regency Romance series. This story was about Viscount Coalwater, the longest held of the Lost Lords. Already a Viscount, he was kidnapped at the young age of 16, and bore the worst of Mr. Goody’s insecurities, therefore, possibly the deepest scars. Could he ever be worthy of a good woman? He thinks not.
I love the group of Lords and their ladies!
I highly recommend this series!
