I am loving this series. Yes, there are problems here and there, but there is something about the story and characters that I love—even though there are times when it isn’t original. As I said in my last review, there are a lot of trope in these stories, but the author throws just enough new things in to make it interesting and shake the tropes up. I ended up reading this whole book in only two sittings (and only then because I had to put it down, not because I wanted to) and I’m immediately jumping into the next.
5 stars pookie bear
Panic in a small area like a truck bed is contagious, apparently.
This is the hard number two. Nothing really happens throughout most of the books and you don’t really get closer to any of the side characters. It was still really funny at times and really gruesome at other times, but it’s a far cry from the first book. I have high hopes for the last book though.
‘I’ve mentioned that names have power, right? Do you realize that when she fights battles, she’s going to have to announce herself to the opposing sword? She’ll be forced to say something ridiculous like, “I am Pooky Bear, from an ancient line of archangel swords.”
This is my absolute favorite YA book series; I love, love the characters. All the books were great. Awesome ending
Although this was good, it just wasn’t good as the first. Unfortunately, as with a lot of series, it suffered from what we know as middle book syndrome. This generally refers to an author’s second book not quite living up to their first, particularly if it’s part of a series.
I think part of the major reason why I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first is that Raffe was barely in it. The witty banter between him and Penryn was a major factor that made the previous book more fun. And since there was barely any romance between them, the least I could hope for was small moments while they‘re together. But no, I spent most of the time reading this book just waiting for him to come.
There were also fewer action scenes and it felt like a long buildup for the ending. To be honest, I don’t really have a lot to say and some events barely registered. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it enough not to put it down. It picked up towards the end, notably with Raffe’s reappearance. In fact, all I could think about while writing this review is starting the next one immediately. So this is it and here’s to hoping the third book will blow me away, with hopefully a happy ending for our couple. They deserve it. I deserve it.

I just love this book. <3
Another good book in this series and still the most different Angel book I have ever read. Full of action, horror at some points and wow apocalyptic to boot. Very good read that I finished quickly because I did not want to put it down. Very good read.
Excellent follow-up to Angelfall. The story picks up at the same scene where the first book ends, and continues in the same vein as the first. Penryn is again looking for Paige, this time without Raffe. She learns a lot about the angels and their endgame, and tries to put an end to it every way she can. The violence and gruesome details are the same, but this time there was some romance to sweeten things up too. And there was an interesting twist at the end that’ll guarantee I’ll read the next book too.
This is such a great sequel! I was glued to this book from the beginning. It starts off right where the first book left off, so nothing is missed from one book to the next. There is so much going on in this book. There are so many things happening that it does not get boring. There are so many mysterious things to ponder while reading, but not so much that it is confusing. It is a perfect balance. I have quite a few theories as to what will happen in the final book. The second book just furthers myu curiosity!
What I liked
The ending! Oh, that ending, it was perfect! The fight scenes in this book were truly remarkable. I just couldn’t get enough of them! A lot of fight scenes in books can seem tedious to read, unless they are written well. The fight scenes in this book were certainly written fantastically!
The exchange between Penryn and Raffe is truly enjoyable in this book. Maybe even more so than in Angelfall. They are comfortable with each other and play off of each other with ease. The dialogues between them were quite amusing. I even laughed out loud a few times.
What I didn’t like
Things seemed a little slow at the beginning of the book, but I think that is just because the first half of the book is only about Penryn. The lack of Raffe was almost unbearable. I think that if the author would have included things from Raffe’s perspective at the beginning of the book then it would be flawless! It’s just that all we see is what Penryn is doing and experiencing. It would be great to know what Raffe is doing and feeling. I know that we get to see a little of his point of view from the dreams that Penryn has, but they are his feelings and experiences while they were together. Not what Raffe was doing or feeling after the first book. So I am on the fence about the dreams. I mean, I like that Penryn gets a small glimpse into Raffe, but in no way does it make up for his lack of presence through over half the book.
This trilogy has been addictive from the moment I started book 1. Penryn is such an incredible character. The bravery she displays in protecting her family and friends is beyond comprehension at her age, but then when she start helping strangers those levels surpass anything I can think of. Even when she reaches those moments to give up, she realized that others wouldn’t push through so she does it; despite her fears.
Her connection to Raffe grows strong and she’s thinks about him and wonders of his safety non-stop.
This is such an amazing story!

*Angelfall spoilers ahead*
Whoa… Well. Another random and exciting installment for the Penryn series. These books have a special way of making my head spin. After the last book ended with our favorite couple separated, I reeeeeeeeeeeally dragged my feet on this one. I had no interest in watching Penryn’s long and drawn out search for Raffe, but my curiosity got the better of me.
THE GOOD
The biggest thing driving my interest in the first book was the romance factor (#SorryNotSorry), so when Raffe and Penryn got separated at the end, I thought I’d be annoyed with this second installment for sure. I mean, a whole book of them just pining for one another?! Gag me.
But surprisingly, I thought Susan Ee did a really great job with it! Who knew I’d grow so attached to a sword like it was an individual character?! Even though Raffe and Penryn are apart, the angel sword reveals some of Raffe’s memories, which helps in building up that romantic tension despite the separation. It was awesome! I loved seeing little snippets of the last book from Raffe’s perspective and getting a more in-depth look at his past.
I’m also still loving how completely weird and random this plot line is??? One second Penryn is sitting in camp talking to a sword and the next, a herd of weird scorpion men are stinging the heck out of civilians and there’s blood everywhere. What?? Sometimes I just had to laugh because I’d be listening to the audio and wondering “how the did we even get here?” But somehow I don’t hate it??? I actually love how weird and creepy these books can be because it’s so different! It keeps me engaged and interested. I mean, a guy getting dismembered at a party is definitely memorable for readers.
THE UGLY
Even though this was a pretty quick listen that I finished (almost) in one work day, the middle of this book felt like it dragged on and on and on.
Part of that is probably my frustration at Raffe’s absence because I was anxious for our favorite couple to reunite. But I hated all the camp stuff in the last book and that takes up a large chunk of the beginning this time around. Then there was that whole part where they get dragged to Alcatraz??? It felt completely pointless. Penryn manages to learn some stuff about Paige’s transformation while she’s there, but that was kind of it?? And they spend a long time planning a huge escape for the Alcatraz prisoners that Penryn isn’t even a part of in the end. Wtf was the point of listening to them plan it?!?
FINAL WORD
Not as good as Angelfall, but this random, creepy romance was definitely entertaining and made me curious about how the this series could possibly end.
I loved the series!!! So fun! Not a big angel fan but loved this trilogy!
This book is the perfect combination of action, science fiction, horror, and romance! It will leave you canceling plans with your friends in order to just finish it. Impossible to put down!
