I loved Max from the moment she showed up in the Ashes to Ashes series. I couldn’t wait to read this book and learn more about Max. I was not disappointed. Max is a rogue witch. She has so much power but knows so little about herself or the basics. Max is a total badass and while she hasn’t always had it easy. She is a fantastic friend and woman. I can’t say enough about his book or Max. I can’t wait to read the next book. There will be no spoilers in this review. Instead you just have to read this book for yourself. And then because you will love it so much go read Annie’s Ashes to Ashes series while you wait for the next book in this series.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.
WOW! What a wild and thrilling ride this spin off from the Ashes series takes you on. Max is one rough, tough, kick butt chic. But, what else would you expect from someone that refuses to stay dead? This story had me hooked from the get-go. I can hardly wait to see what happens in the next book!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this story in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
A grab bag of characters and thrills
Max, a witch of unusual power, has spent her life dying and coming back while protecting others. As the story progresses unknown secrets come to light, she can’t keep from fighting against her need to help, and this time may be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back. Annie Anderson’s Woman of Blood and Bone is a thrilling read with a grab bag of characters and their assorted issues. I truly appreciated her sense of mystery and wanted to rail at her toward the end for some of the things that happened. If you appreciate Kim Harrison and Patricia Briggs, you cannot go wrong with this book.
Jump into a fantasy world with magic, angels, demons, and so much more. The female lead is awesome and kicks some butt as she gives tattooed trying to live her life. After living for hundreds of years she thinks she has seen it all until life throws her a curve ball. Now she has to figure things out before it all goes bad with little to no information. Great development and smooth writing that Will draw you in until you hit the last page wondering what will happen next. Perfect for fans of the genre. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
OMG!!!!!! I could not put this down. I so badly am waiting to read more from Annie Anderson. I highly recommend this book and author to everyone who loves a terrific book. i can’t wait to read more loved it.
Solid 4.5 star,
This book is go go go right from the start and keeps up a great pace throughout, we meet characters who you can’t help to connect with and have plenty of action, bloodshed, tragedy, mystery and surprises. Max is a rouge a Witch without a Coven after getting ditched by her delightful (not) Mother at 14, Striker is Max’s best friend well one of only a couple of friends really who is an Empath who helps Max get in and out of trouble. Life changes dramatically for them both when a guy comes into Max’s shop for a tattoo and Striker talks to the guys pregnant girlfriend and find out she is in trouble and needs to get away from the guy and i is literally life and death. From there Max and Striker along with a few others need to try and save Melody as well as try and fix what the Demon has done to Max. Will they all live or will it be over for them all?
I really liked Maxima when she was introduced in Mrs. Anderson’s Ashes to Ashes series. I’m so glad she got her own story. Although Maxima makes an appearance in that series you don’t have to read it to enjoy this.
Max is a strong, sweet, caring and broken woman. She has known a lot of heartache and pain in her life. Cast out at young age because she was different from everyone else Maxima is accustomed to being alone. Not having anyone there to love, guide or protect her hasn’t harden Maxima or kept her down though. She forged ahead learning as she went. Maxima is courageous in the face of danger even when there’s a possibility that she might not make it out of a situation alive.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series to come out. I’m eager to find out what’s going to happen next in Maxima’s story.
ANNIE HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!
Wow! I’m just gonna go ahead and tell ya, this is one wild ride. An excellent, easy to follow, fast paced, nailbiting, thrilling read that captures your attention from the first page to the last word. You can’t put it, frozen to the edge of your seat and held prisoner till the very end. Annie shows her impressive skilled talent to bring this from imagination to life. You’ll follow the main characters and fall in love with their personalities. You root for the good guys and try to help with the bad. A must read for anyone that loves an exciting tale.
An outcast witch and her Fae business partner get sucked into an ongoing battle with an incubus to save a human woman and her unborn baby.
Maxima was never properly trained on how to use her magical abilities, so she tends to slap together a plan and pray that it works out. When a very pregnant Melody comes into Max’s tattoo shop with her boyfriend and begins to chat with Max’s business partner, Ian, they both begin to get the feeling that there is something majorly wrong with the man and that this woman needs their help. Thus begins an exhilarating race against time to protect the girl from a very powerful incubus, who also seems to be very interested in Max. Along their journey, we are introduced to a variety of other characters, all of whom belong to different magical races and possess their own powers; these individuals all lend their help in this chaotic rescue effort.
While I enjoyed this book, I did feel like I was missing some character details and struggled to settle into the story. Learning later that Maxima and others had been introduced in a previous series by the author, it does make a bit more sense. I kept expecting a happy twist of fate to occur earlier in the book- the heroes will arrive in time and save the day- but was kept on my toes until the very end, which was a change of pace from other books in this genre. Overall, I enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading the other books in this series and any other related.
Freaking awesome read!! I will 100% be reading the rest of this series!! I love the narrator, the characters are amazing and the storyline is completely original. Max is freaking awesome and the author but just the right amount of humor, sexual tension, action and drama into this book. I mean it, this story is action packed and full of drama. I can’t wait to start the next book!
This was a poorly written book. I liked the plot idea and the ethereal world created, but I knew after only a few pages into the work, that I wasn’t going to like it. For some stupid reason, I persisted in reading through to the end; although I did start skimming about 50 pages in. Not going to continue with this series.
Maxima died for the first time at the age of 14. When she came back, her mom threw her out and declared her Rogue. With no home and no chance to learn her Craft, she sets out on her own. After hundreds of years and numerous deaths Max has now settled in Seattle. She runs a tattoo parlor and lives a quiet life. No real friends except for her best friend Striker, who’s also co-owner of the tattoo parlor. One night while tatting a real sleezeball, Striker sits with the sleezeball’s pregnant girlfriend and noticies that something’s off. After putting the boyfriend to sleep, they discover his plans are to kill the poor woman once the baby’s born. She’s terrified, but knows that he doesn’t know enough about her to find her if she heads back to her family.
After a confrontation with the sleezeball, they get the poor woman back to her family, but said sleezeball ends up showing up and it’s not pretty. Come to find out, sleezeball is a demon and has marked Max. She has to kill him before the brands heal in order to free herself. Asking for help isn’t something Max or Striker want to do, but in this situation, they need all the help they can get. When Max finds out what she needs to kill the demon, she gathers what she can before she confronts the only person on the planet for the knife needed. The person who kicked her out and marked her Rouge at 14. Her mother.
During this time, Max also finds out that her father is a demon, the only son of the Queen, the same woman who gave her the directions to kill Micah, Bernadette.
After securing everything needed, Max casts the spell and gets the knife ready to kill the thing that marked her.
Will Max be able to kill Micah before the brands heal? This book does answer that question, but since it’s book 1 of a series, it does end on a cliffhanger. With good writing, interesting characters, and an intriguing storyline, you’ll want to continue!

Woman of Blood and Bone is a brilliant beginning to an amazing book series. I started the series awhile back and would wait with baited breath for each new installment. I have to say that the series gets better and better with each book. It has been really fun to go back and read this a second time now that the series is complete. Max is a super kicka** witch who is coming into her own after 400 years of life. She is discovering who she is, is not who she always believed. Looking out for a troubled girl, Max and her best friend Striker embark on an adventure that tests them and their friendship to the limit. A super exciting story that I enjoyed the second time through just as much as the first.
I loved the book. Max is not an easy character, she is someone who has paid and continues to pay for being who she is. This is her life; no one is completely honest or totally upfront with her. Max continues to go forward in the manner she knows. It is not easy but neither is she. She also one of the world’s only sarcastic entities. I love character, she will undoubtedly survive.
That was absolutely magnificent! Max is not only a Witch but also a smart a@@. Her best friend is a mouthy Empath and these two take on some major nasty stuff. I could not put this down….on to book 2!
I also enjoyed the audiobook through Authors Direct.
Woman of Blood & Bone
Good characters and an interesting story, I really liked the line “driving like a blind monkey on uppers”
Loved seeing Max again after meeting her in the Ashes to Ashes series. She is who I want to be when I grow up. Kick-butt witch who takes no crap and always helps those around her. She is beautiful, smart and snarky as all get out. I loved reading more about her in this book. Fantastic characters, love the supernatural, the awesome storyline. Couldn’t put it down and jumped right onto the next book. Annie Anderson never disappoints.
Wow I love Maxima. Such a strong, sassy survivor. In this story we follow Max as she, along with er best friend attempt to save a human from an incubus. Long suffering due to banishment from her family and society, Max has issue forming friendships or even simply trusting others. She has a penchant for self-sacrifice that would drive any friends insane. In short, she is an amazing chick.
This story was riveting. I could not put it down.
I loved Max in Annie’s Scattered Ashes series, but now we get a chance to see the “real” witch, what makes her tick, and how her history shaped her into the badA$$ witch she has become. Her tragic past is revealed… Sit back, and get ready for one heck of a ride!
I loved every heart-pounding moment of this book! Max’s snark and attitude are just what the doctor ordered, and trouble seems to find her wherever she goes.
This is a must-read book and series, Book 2 is just as good, if not better! I’m not-so-patiently waiting for book 3! 5 stars!
