Stayed up later than I should so I could see what happened next. Not to be readers: definitely rated R.
The book kept me interested all the way through. It dealt with some difficult issues that were disturbing; however there was hope in the end.
It disturbed me. The violence was the underlying theme and I didn’t like it.
The main character seemed to make so many bad decisions it irritated me.
A good story. I liked both main characters with their wry humor. Since I am fond of detective stories it was enjoyable for me.
Read this instead of doing chores…riveting!
Great. Ending WOW!!!
Adrian and Imogen are detectives and partners. Not long after starting to work together, they found themselves attracted to one another, but aren’t ready to go public with their relationship.
Driving into work early one morning, Adrian is attracted to a group of people staring into the water. It turns out to be the body of a woman. At first Adrian thinks she is dead. When he wades into the water to get her body onshore, he sees her move and realizes she is alive. She has obviously been badly beaten. At the hospital, she is examined by Dr. Hadley who is familiar with cases like this. Adrian is so touched by the poor woman, he is determined to find out who beat her. She claims to not remember her name, so they call her Jane Doe. Then she quietly leaves the hospital on her own.
The police then find the body of a male in the water just down from from where Jane Doe was found. He had also been beaten. When they investigate the man, they learn his name which brings them to the woman they had found whose name is Angela Corrigan. Angela is married to the owner of a large construction company. His demeanor when talking to the detectives is cocky. Adrian and Imogen know that he must be the one who beat his wife and possibly killed the other man, but how can they pin it on him?
This story at first appeared to be that of a woman who is enduring beatings from her husband, but as the detectives delve further into the Corrigans, they find some sinister things.
Prepare yourself for a rather shocking event that will certainly disgust you for it is hard to believe that some people can be so evil. I do think that readers will find this a well-written tale that slowly puts the pieces together to a terrific ending.

Diamond is at her absolute best in this layered reveal suspense-fest. With the return of her brilliantly conceived crime-fighting duo, Diamond dials the action up a notch. Reads perfectly as a standalone in spite of being part of a series. Stunning writing, unflinching detail, and brutal character evolution – this comes very highly recommended for crime, thriller and mystery fans.
Love this series.
I felt this book got off to rather a shaky start. It felt as though the production had been rushed. I love the author’s style of writing but I felt it could have been a lot tighter and there were several unnecessary repetitions. I’m in two minds whether the voice of Angela added anything to the book.
However, the story is an absolute blinder. One scene in particular is incredibly harrowing and intense.
Highly recommend to fans of crime fiction.
I didn’t realize that this book was part of a series, several books in which might have affected my decision to read it had I known. I don’t think you had to have read the previous stories, but it may have helped explain the relationship between the two detectives, Adrian and Imogen. As it was, I found neither of them truly likable, more irritating than anything, much like the woman in the water, Angela, who Adrian rescues. The story revolves around why this woman pretended not to know who she was before disappearing to go back home to her abusive husband. This reminds Adrian of his childhood with an abused mother and he feels a need to help Angela no matter what. There’s apparently no one in her husband’s life who he has not threatened or already harmed so the detectives have no assistance in their investigation.
The plot itself is decent, but very simple. The story felt way too padded with repetition, mainly of the internal dialogues of Adrian and Imogen. He continually lies about how strongly he feels and things that happen to him, pushing Imogen away and damaging both their personal and professional relationship. I was annoyed with him for his behavior and with Imogen for putting up with it. Angela doesn’t come across as anything more than a battered wife who believes life is hopeless and she’ll never escape, her husband will always win, etc. The story needs more action and less reflection . MUCH less reflection, there are just pages and pages of it. And the dialogue is so stilted and awkward that it was often hard to read and I found myself continually thinking that people just don’t talk that way.
I wish I had enjoyed this more, as there was great potential but it just didn’t follow through. The twist in the end was good and I’m glad something happened after investing all that time reading, but it couldn’t save the story for me.
