Great author, comparable to Patricia Briggs! Definitely a favorite.
Wolf’s Bane by Aimee Easterling is Book 1 in the Moon Marked series. This is a well written story with interesting characters. We have foxes among wolves which is deadly for the fox. Mai is a fox, Kitsume, actually whose species was eradicated centuries earlier by the wolves and she must keep her identity hidden. Mai struggles to keep herself and her sister Kira together by cage fighting. She is approached by Gunner, a werewolf alpha, to help find a serial killer. Lot of thins are going on that keep the story moving and the characters become real.
Piper Goodeve, narrator, is amazing. She brings the characters to life and places the reader in the thick of things.
I highly recommend both the ebook and audio book. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.
I love books with strong female characters and this one has that for sure.
Different than the usual wolf shifter book. It has a touch of the old “gods”. Good book.
„Wolf’s Bane“, the start to the “Moon Marked Series” by Aimee Easterling focus on Mai Fairchild, who have been invested in protecting her sister Kira since the death of their mother. Mai and Kira live in a city controlled by werewolves, where kitsune such as themselves frequently become victims and get killed. Due to the premature death of her mother Mai do not have a deep understanding about her own heritage, the cryptic comments of her mother’s spirit inside her own mind notwithstanding. All in one Mai needs to tread very carefully around the werewolves to avoid retaliations. Difficult to do after she loses her job and steps into the underground fighting arena.
Meanwhile Gunner, a recent newcomer to the city, looking for clues on a series of shifter killings, as Gunner and Mai paths keep on crossing, Mai grows suspicious, wolves and foxes don’t mix, even it the chemistry between is instantaneous. The plot develops into an interesting mystery with a good dose of romance slowly burning on the side.
Aimee Easterling is an excellent writer whose shifters are always relatable with a distinct personality and traits that makes them instantly recognizable. Mai is a unique shifter character, we are accustomed to wolves, bears and occasionally tigers, but a kitsune (Japanese foxlike shifters) is an intriguing character. The fact that she herself does not have (at the start of the story) a deep understanding about their own heritage, allows the reader to learn about the kitsune folklore gradually and to “bond” with her thought the action. Being this book the beginning of the series, there is some questions and ongoing storylines that would have to be resolved at some later point in the story arc, which makes the story even more realistic and appealing.
Wolf’s Bane is Aimee Easterling’s first novel in her new Moon Marked Series. Once again she puts a different spin on a typical werewolf book by adding a fox shifter into the mix as the female protagonist. Wolves and foxes are mortal enemies, so how are they suppose to work toward their common goal and solve a murder? Meanwhile Mai has to figure out a way to keep herself and her sister safe, and her sister in her custody. Gunner seems willing to help, which makes no sense since he is suppose to kill her on sight. How can she work with wolves with one eye open at all times?
The storyline is reasonably paced and well written, filled with magic, danger, secrets and intrigue. The characters are well developed and engaging. I am looking forward to book 2 to see where this adventure leads.
Such an interesting book. Characters jump right out at you. Do you like werewolves? Do you like magic? Well, start reading! Mai and Kira was Japanese fox shifters, whose mother had died. Mai was trying to keep Kira out of the foster system and put food on the table by fighting in a ring. Explosive dialogue to get you where the story is going. Good writing and storytelling.
I really enjoyed Mia and Gunner’s tale.
At a young age Mia had to take responsibility for her younger sister Kira. It’s been challenging trying to raise Kira while trying to find out more about her species. Mia is an admirable individual yet I felt she should have been more organized. I’d go into more detail with that but I don’t want to spoil anything. I admittedly wasn’t a huge fan of her little sister. I couldn’t believe she did some of things she did. I loved Gunner. I can see him becoming Mia’s rock. I can’t wait to find out how the rest of their story is going to go.
This story is rich with emotive language. The characters are interesting and there’s good chemistry between Mai and Gunner. The dangers keep coming and from different directions. The few times Mai gets seriously attacked, her wounds are hardly mentioned. She also excuses her younger sister who makes big decisions without asking for advice, which irked me. Also, the story feels a little disjointed at times. I am interested in finding out what happens next.
Wolf’s Bane had a lot of action in it. There was a lot of back and forth for Mia. From one potential threat to another. Everything she thought she knew and everything she thought she had under control was nothing. Following Mia and Gunner in their adventure was interesting. Mia had quiet the depth of character. Hopefully we’ll get to know more about Gunner and his men in the next books. The book flowed from action point to action point and we didn’t know who to trust or not. It was a good read and start to the series.
Drama filled and exciting fights keep the action moving through the whole book. This is an interesting shifter story that leaves a lot still unknown. Plenty of room to keep the series going.
Fast-paced, action-driven plot with interesting characters who survive in a hostile world while staying true to relationships with family/friends even when the choices are difficult.
It was my pleasure to receive this free book and give my honest review.
very good, but you have to get the next to see what happens
Contrary to what a lot of the reviewers have written, I found this story to be intriguing. Yes, it leaves questions unanswered, but most of the stories that are coming out now do as well. I am certain that my questions will be answered in subsequent books. I thought the fox characters were delightful. the Wolf was interesting. I enjoyed the story. I am looking forward to reading more in future stories to see what happens.
Good read
Loved it
I enjoyed it and bought more of this series. Great characters …Even a shifter character I had not encountered before in any other series that I have read. The characters were unique and believable. Problems genuine and yet unfamiliar. Twists and turns you don’t see coming. Worth the time.
I could not put this book down! This is one that shows the courage of a young shifter left on her own to care for her sister. With the help of an Alpha Fox she is able to survive even though she is a fox. I had to read the second book in the series right away and am going to purchase the third to see the ending!
Awesome…but i would like a little more back story and mote detail of a kitsune
Great start to a new series and this time it’s not only wolves…you’ve got foxes too. Mai and her sister are all alone in the world and are two fox shifters in hiding surrounded by werewolves. With both her parents dead, Mai finds herself doing whatever she has to in order to protect her sister and their secret. A skilled fighter, Mai takes part in an underground fight club to help make ends meet. Gunner is an alpha werewolf who along with his pack leader brother and some other packmates has come to the city to try to discover who is behind some supernatural killings. Mai and Gunner’s paths keep intersecting and the find themselves not only drawn together by circumstances but attraction as well. When faced with no other options, Mai reluctantly turns to Gunner for help only to find herself in over her head. When her little sister is kidnapped and her secret is on the verge of exposure, will Mai have the strength to do what needs to be done to save her sister? Will the revelation of her secret be the end or just the beginning? This book was action-packed and you will find yourself drawn into the story as you try to guess what will happen next and you will be brought along as Mai discovers more about her heritage. Can’t wait to see where this series goes!
Audio Version Review:
The narrator does a fantastic job and is a delight to listen to. Great pace to the story that can easily be sped up and still understood. It was easy to tell when characters were talking versus the narration of the story. There are distinct voices for each character, but I have to say Gunner’s gruff and growly voice was perfect for the alpha wolf he is.
