Dark and twisted…a great sequel to Stillhouse Lake and Killman Creek
Wolfhunter River, like the first two book in this series, is a fantastic, intense, and nail-biting read. Rachel Caine keeps delivering with her Stillhouse Lake series––proving that she has more than earned all the rave reviews. I’m hooked. I’ve already ordered the next in the series, Bitter Falls. Can’t wait!
This book started off more slowly, which was a bit of a relief after binge-reading the first two! Once again there are different POVs, which gives more depth to the story. It was also good to read about Sam’s past, and he was a more prominent character in this book.
The story line is a mix of old and new, and the ending gives a new direction to Gwen’s life. I can’t wait for book 4 to come out and see what happens next!
I love this author’s writing style and look forward to reading more by her. Highly recommend this series!
I found this book good but much of the violence was a bit much for me. I still found the book riveting and could not put it down wanting to see how things turned out. Not sure where book 4 will take us but I am still fascinated with Gwen and her family. I did find this book slow to start but I loved the other 2 so much that I felt if I stuck it out I would be rewarded. Out of the 3 books this is my least favorite at times I found myself asking why would you do all this. But I am glad I read it and will be looking to read book 4 too.
Love this series. Rachel doesn’t disappoint with the 3rd book. The way she writes the distress and emotion of these characters that have been through so much is amazing. Love to see a strong female character who was once a victim now be such a hero, not only for herself, but helping others. It’s refreshing. This series always has me on the edge of my seat and I can never put the book down.
The first two books in this series were great psychological thrillers with one sick killer. Gwen lived a nightmare in both books and finally prevailed over evil. Those things were the best parts of those books.
That being said those same things have now became a main reason I didn’t enjoy this book. The second book was so stressful with what the author put Gwen through, but at least the ending of that book was satisfying.
For me, this book beat a dead horse for over 300 pages. To keep rehashing the past, never letting a particular subject that has already been fully discussed so many times in the two previous books was more than I could take. Move on. Let Gwen and her kids be able to live a quiet life. I was also not fond of the secret Sam had been keeping. This is something to me that should have been brought up in book 1 not in book 3 when Gwen is finally learning to trust a man again. I mean does the author hate Gwen??
It may not seem like it but I loved first two books. This one just didn’t work for me and rubbed me the wrong way right from the start. I thought the last book was the end of the series and as I’ve stated I was comfortable with that ending but this book throws that completely out of whack so even though I didn’t enjoy this one I hope there is one more that gives a HEA cause Gwen and the kids deserve it!!
I am never disappointed in a Rachel Caine book and love this Stillhouse series. This is the 3rd book so to follow you should read #1 Stillhouse Lake and #2 Killman Creek to understand what is going on with Gwen Proctor whose husband was a serial killer. Gwen saved her family but she cant seem to outrun her husband’s notoriety. Wherever she goes it follows her even on the internet where people think she was involved.
This book brings them to Wolfhunter River where a woman reached out to her, Marlene Crockett and her daughter is being held for murder. Caine’s books are intense and surprising because you think you know what is happening and then all of a sudden the scene changes.
Awesome book! I’ve read the first two books in this series. I couldn’t put it down. Please, please keep writing. I hope there’s another book in this series.
Love this series! High intrigue in this fast-paced mystery.
Loved this series!
This series has a continuing story arc and I highly recommend the first two books be read before starting this one. The backstories are critical to fully understanding the main characters, appreciating from where they’ve come and who they are now.
Gwen Proctor thinks she can finally take a breath after having escaped the clutches of her serial killer husband and exposed and dismantled a dangerous group supporting his sick objectives. However, her family is still at risk from their increased notoriety spearheaded by a group comprised of the family members of Melvin Royal’s victims. And, that group is led by someone with unlimited resources and hatred of Gwen. Meanwhile, she receives a cryptic call from a Marlene Crockett, a stranger from the small town of Wolfhunter who is seeking guidance for herself and her daughter but, not long after, turns up dead with that daughter accused of her murder.
There’s so much going on in this story, especially when Gwen lands in Wolfhunter to help Marlene’s daughter, Vera (Vee) who reached out to her. It was hard to distinguish between the compromised law enforcement, those that just resented Gwen because of her history and the good guys. In the midst of all this is an abducted child and three missing young women feared dead, in addition to the relentless media assaults on Gwen and her family. There’s obviously something seriously wrong in this town and figuring that out is just as challenging. I had to pay close attention because the clues are all there.
I read the first two books and opted to listen to this one as this series is ideal to listen to because of the pace and action. I’m so glad I made the switch because the narrators masterfully handled the narratives of Gwen, her daughter Lanny, her son Connor and her lover Sam Cade. I especially liked the performance for Gwen as she adeptly captured the personality and steeliness of this fearsome woman. I highly recommend this format.
This next phase of life for Gwen and her family didn’t disappoint and it has some powerful, painful moments with some shocking betrayals. There’s nothing predictable about the story and it was beyond exciting and gnarly. At times things seemed a little convoluted but eventually made sense when I got to the outcome. It’s an intricate story and you better pay close attention to the details. It’s a worthy edition to this unique and exciting series.

Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine is the third book in the Stillhouse Lake Series. I really enjoyed this book with the twist of Gwen trying to help someone else that is in trouble. I really enjoyed the fact that the book gave multiple points of views from Gwen, Sam, Lanny, and Connor.
I couldn’t put the book down. I would highly recommend this series to anyone that likes suspense thrillers.
I cannot wait for book four Bitter Falls to be released In January 2020. I already preordered it.
Nice finale to the trilogy
Complex characters drive this intense wrap-up to a frightening trilogy. Lots of unexpected twists and very satisfying culminations to new and old problems.
Wow, so many characters, loose ends, and storylines, almost making my head spin at times, and then coming to such an unexpected and unpredictable finish. Riveting!
I really enjoyed the third book in the series. Liked how the kids are getting older and become an integral part of it all. Edge of your seat, suspenseful action and a nice twist at the end.
I have been excitedly waiting for this book and could not wait to start reading. I was not disappointed. I could not swipe pages on my Kindle fast enough and read this straight through! After the events in the second book, I wondered where the author would be able to go with the main thread tying the books together, and she did a great job of creating a situation that will give her plenty of leeway for future novels. There was “hold onto your seat” action and a LOT of gut-tearing emotion. Both aspects are something the author has always done very well, and what will keep me coming back for future installments of the series. Another wild ride in a great series. A young girl is kidnapped, betrayed by someone who is supposed to protect her. Gwen Proctor, formerly Gina Royal is doing the best to create a normal life for her children after the death of her serial killer ex-husband, Melvin. Somehow even though he is dead, Melvin continues to interrupt their lives. She doesn’t know how she would survive without Sam Cade, her lover and brother of one of Melvin’s victims. When after lengthy discussions and promises made, Gwen agrees to appear on a show about her ex-husband. She wants to make clear, to those who are still interested in persecuting her and her children, that they knew nothing about his evil other life. As things go out of control, Gwen realizes that she has been ambushed by the show. Has she made things worse for her family? Gwen receives a plea for help from a woman in Wolfhunter, but arrives too late. Has Gwen been set up? What happened to the young girl that was kidnapped, is she still alive? Will Gwen be able to protect and save her children? A wonderful third book in this captivating series by Ms. Caine. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Another intense and disturbing read following the life of Gwen and her kids, as well as her partner Sam.
A phone call from a strange woman who claims to need her help leaves Gwen feeling unsettled and unsure of what to do about it. Not to mention the ambush that happens when Gwen tries to tell her side of the story. Life has gone from tenuously optimistic to death threats, camera crews and increasingly difficult to endure. Sam is realising that his two worlds are colliding not matter how much he wishes they weren’t, and he realises he may loose the family he thinks of as his own.
After another strange phone call they decide to set of as a family to investigate and take a break from Stillwater and it’s undesirables. Though nothing is what it seems in Wolfhunter River and they may just have been a lot safer of they had stayed at home! Not to be missed adrenaline inducing fast paced race against the walls of the town and it’s secrets that are slowly closing in around them. Five incredible stars!
