I really enjoyed the first two books in this series but now I am struggling to finish book #3. The story is well-written, but I am having trouble staying interested in a woman who is beleaguered by the memory and reputation of her serial-killer husband. Cheers, Lynda
I didn’t think there was any way this series could get any better. I thought that with Melvin out of the picture, that there was little chance the “suspenseful magic” could be recreated and sustained through another book. Boy, was I WRONG! The drama and suspense in this book was every bit as intense and captivating, as it was in the first two. In fact, I think I might even have liked this book the most! I will never doubt Caine’s ability to “bring it”, again.
This story was PACKED with twists and turns and shocking, jaw-dropping moments. And, although I think that Gwen and her family have been put through enough, I would really love for there to be more books in this series.

*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer in order to read and provide a voluntary and honest review, should I choose to do so.
This book isn’t as exciting as the first two in the series. But by the end of this book I didn’t want to put it down.
This series just gets better and better! In this third installment, except for the usual internet stalkers and crazies, life has been a little quieter for Gwen, Sam, and the kids. That is until Gwen goes on a television show and ends up getting skewered by the host and a guest, Miranda Tidewell, whose daughter was killed by Gwen’s serial killer husband. Things start to get crazy very quickly after that.
Gwen, Sam, and the kids decide to get out of town for a few days and go to the town of Wolfhunter to help solve a mystery. From here the story struck an ominous pace upon arrival in the dark, creepy town of Wolfhunter. They are there to help the daughter of a murdered woman who had reached out to Gwen for help. The townspeople are less than helpful. In fact, they are downright nasty and dangerous. There are many secrets swirling around this town and Gwen doesn’t know who to trust. Sam has his own secrets which involve Miranda Tidewell, and he isn’t entirely forthcoming, so Gwen has another worry to bear.
There was a lot going on in this book, sometimes it was difficult to keep up, but it was always intriguing and mesmerizing. The heart-pounding wrap-up was intense. I listened once again via audiobook and loved the narration. I gave it 4 one-half stars rounded up to five.
This series seriously freaks me out….and I love it!
Wolfhunter River by author Rachel Caine is non-stop action for Gwen, Lanny, Connor, and Sam! The media torment has not stopped for Gwen Proctor and her two kids even after the death of her serial killer husband. She has tried to put the horrible past behind her and live with Lanny and Connor in peace. Can she trust that Sam Cade really cares about her, or is he becoming worn down because of the tragic notoriety of her life?
The story opens with the kidnapping of a young girl. This plot is interwoven with strange happenings at Wolfhunter River. Gwen receives a mysterious call for help from a stranger and a few days later the stranger is dead, possibly killed by her own daughter. Gwen goes to Wolfhunter River seeking some answers about the strange phone calls and from the time Gwen’s family enter this secluded town, they are on the run for their lives.
The Stillhouse Lake series is great suspense reading!

I was excited and curious to hear that there was a third book in the Stillhouse Lake series. I wanted to know where this book would go. It took a bit to get started but once it did, there were so many plots I kind of got a little mixed up. There are so many twists and turns you start to get dizzy.
Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine took a different twist from the cyber-stalking from Absalom, Melvin’s fan club stalking and all the terror threats Gwen was getting. It does have a little bit of that, but the main focus was on Wolfhunter River. A town with a wicked history. One with a history so dark you would likely see on Criminal Minds. I like the way this book went but there were so many moving parts you need to make sure you are paying 110% attention to every page. There are pages where you will be second guessing if this person is friend or foe and which moving part do they belong to.
I cannot imagine myself in Gwen’s position. I would probably move out of the country but Gwen Procter is a thousand times stronger than I would ever be. The way her son took it just melted my heart. Her children had to grow up so fast and they know things that a normal child should not have to but they are so resilient.
I was a fan of Sam but had a stinking suspicion this book would open more of his history. It sure did.
And of course, in walks Miranda Tidewell, mother to one of Melvin’s victims. She is out for revenge, any revenge she can get… All that is left is Gwen and her kids. That woman is off her rocker.
I do like the spin-off at the end of the book. Quite curious if there will be more to come. It just felt like this book could actually be three almost four books in one. Each plot in the book felt rushed and I wish they were split up and dug into more.
For action alone, Wolfhunter River deserves five stars. Gwen is a survivor as she’s proven over and over. First her serial killer husband, then his victims families, and pretty much the rest of the world wants Gwen’s head on a pike. Tough as nails and one fierce mother, Gwen will not let anything happen to her kids. She hates injustice and when people call her for help she does what she can but she never expected the results of phone call out of Wolfhunter. Like a train wreck you cannot look away from, Gwen and lover Sam’s journey to help a teenager in Wolfhunter jets from one disaster to the next. The story quickly becomes one of survival when monsters appear everywhere and Gwen’s cannot tell who to trust. Each page flip brings more fly by the seat of your pants action until your head is spinning with the probabilities that Gwen’s family is either the luckiest or the unluckiest of survivors. Gwen kicks butt and takes names and Sam definitely isn’t too shabby either. Wolfhunter River is an action-packed thriller that grabs you by the throat for pulse pounding excitement.
Full of mystery and plenty of villains, Wolfhunter River possesses many of the elements fans love about this series. The ending was action packed and the many revelations associated with both new and familiar characters were quite surprising in my opinion. Some readers will love the extra layer of suspense that comes with Gwen and her family being placed in even graver risk as this book takes a new direction. Some won’t. In the author’s defense, the only alternative is to end the series which she obviously is not ready to do and I don’t blame her. She has a real talent for adult domestic suspense and this segue was clearly well-thought out. Read it and see what you think. The turbulent Wolfhunter River awaits!
You can’t run from your past. In today’s world of instant communication lies spread faster than the truth. In this third installment we see Gwen still doing whatever she can to stem the tide of hate and protecting her children. She is starting to let others in when a ghost from the past returns. To escape Gwen takes on someone else’s problems and we are caught up in the whirlwind that is Gwen’s life. This is a terrifically twisted tale that will keep you guessing and flipping pages through the very end.
This is the third book in the Stillhouse Lake series. The story weaves a complex plot of lies, manipulation, and murder. It is recommended to read the series in order as it is linear.
It’s been said before but cannot possibly be reiterated enough; this series is phenomenal. From book one to this book Rachel Caine takes the reader on a thrilling psychological roller coaster. She has created something brilliantly deceptive and alluring. While Caine brings back familiar characters in Wolfhunter River, she does so with an edge. She allows room for transitional growth in their psyches based on the horrific events that have impacted their lives thus far. The reader gains perspective from both the intrinsic and extrinsic battle each of them is facing as the narrative provides dialog from alternating points of view. The reader is also afforded a glimpse at new and exciting tertiary characters who support the dark, malevolent underpinning of this novel. And just when you think you have it all figured out, Caine pulls the rug right out from under you. Great Read. Highly recommended.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
Good story action packed, intense and interesting. The narrators did an amazing job. Great characters. Definitely recommend it.
If you have read the other 2 books you will also like this one.
At first, I wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to like this one very much. The same old crew was still there but the direction of their focus and lives turn a different turn. I missed Kez and Javier but the story ended up being really well layed out and some crazy twists and turns. I really liked the ending to because it confirms the direction of this new focus and storyline.
A young girl is kidnapped, 3 young women go missing. A phone call for help from a woman in Wolfhunter River. A new documentary to discredit Gwen Proctor.
All of this begins the novel, the latest in the series about Gwen and her infamous ex-husband, serial killer Melvin Royal. Now Gwen is pulled into helping the woman who called her begging for help. What unfolds is a horrifying story of a town, evil to its core.
Gwen must come to terms with Sam and his past, knowing who to trust and who to question, while fiercely protecting her children.
I liked the dark and scary theme of this book. I thought the plot was good, but I did think it was a bit unrealistic how the shooting and imprisonments scenes played out. However, I will continue with the series to find out what comes next for this family.

This is the 3rd book in the series that I’ve read and I’ve read them in order. There are parts of this story that I liked and others I didn’t. I understand teenagers can be difficult, but get a little tired of the tantrums thrown by Lanny (15 year old daughter). I understand a big part of the plot with this series are the trolls, haters and internet whack jobs that think Gwen (Gina) helped her psycho ex-husband murder innocent women. I would like to see a little more in the stories where it isn’t always about that first and foremost. After all, how many times can a person and their children survive attacks before it becomes less than believable. It would be nice to see more depth to the characters instead of the same repeated statements, thoughts and actions. I did like the twists in the town of Wolfhunter. Makes you realize there is a lot of crazy and sick perverts out there.
Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine is book #3 in the Stillhouse Lake series, and even though I normally dislike reading books with series, I am hook with these! So exciting I couldn’t sit still, and so very well written I couldnt put it down. Lived the plot and the well written characters.
4 stars
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher and author for the advanced copy of book. All opinions are my own.
Rachel Caine’s Wolfhunter River seems like a bridge book. A book to get us from the end of Killman Creek to her fourth book, whatever that may be. We know that in Killman Creek, Caine tied up Gwen’s life with her X husband. This book is just a bridge to the next one. Caine has a great series going, and I have really enjoyed her books. The way this ends, you know Caine is moving Gwen toward a new career, where Gwen can use her unique insights. I look forward to seeing what Caine has in store for Gwen, Sam and her kids.
Nail bitingly good stuff.
In this we find Gwen being attacked on multiple sides. Sam still has secrets, Melvin is continuing to cause her and the children pain. If this isn’t enough, she receives a strange phone call from a woman she doesn’t know, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy the likes of Twin Peaks.
I don’t know how the author comes up with these things (or any author for that matter) but this is such a fantastic series. I really feel for Gwen/Gina and everything she has gone through after discovering her husband was a serial killer.
This book still continues along the path of stalkers trying to make her life miserable because she had to have known what her husband was doing. Enter Miranda, she is a co-founder of Lost Angels and she is out to destroy Gwen. I get that she lost her daughter to Gwen’s husband, but why does she want to destroy Gwen’s life? She is a bit delusional.
The book takes another turn with the disappearance of a little girl and a call from a woman in Wolfhunter saying her life is in danger and she knows too much about a situation. Gwen sometimes helps women that want to escape a dangerous situation but since she wasn’t given much information about what is going on in Wolfhunter she doesn’t take it as seriously as she might with more details. That is until she receives a call from the woman’s daughter which sets things in motion.
So not only is Gwen dealing with those trying to destroy her life (and her children’s), she finds herself smack dab in this small town with a backwoods mentality and a secret…well actually there are probably 2-3 secrets that add some intriguing twists and turns to this story.
I know there is at least 1 more book after this one, but this book could have ended here. There is no cliff hanger ending and things are mostly tied up. So now I’m wondering how this ending plays into the next book and what could possibly happen to Gwen next.
Excellent series!
