3.5 stars for Wolf Ranch:Rough by Renee Rose and Vanessa Vale. This is book one in the Wolf Ranch series. This is my first book from these authors and I enjoyed it. It was a short sexy read. Number One rule is to never reveal your werewolf to a human. Boyd just broke that rule. Audrey is an OB doctor, but she knows something is up with Boyd. What happens when she finds out his secret. This was a good storyline, and I loved the characters. I can’t wait to learn more about the Wolf brothers
Loved Boyd and Audrey
Boyd Wolf, is the third son and youngest of the former Alpha. The black sheep. Rodeo Champion and player. His.wolf just staked his.claim on the curvy, petite, human doctor working the competition. A
Dr Audrey Ames is the new OB/Gyn in town. After a big city childhood she is ready for a small town slow down. Montana is A dream come true for A girl with a cowboy fetish ready to settle down. As hot and charming Boys Wolf is, he is not what she is looking for. She can’t deny the draw she feels toward her.
A serious injury has Boyd trying to distract his mate from how fast he is healing, while trying to figure out how he is going to claim her. When his.brother the Alpha finds out, he sets.Boyd with the task of watching and being sure her curiosity doesn’t lead to trouble for them.
Boyd staked his claim in a very public way. Making Audrey a target for his many admirers. Protecting her for the wealthy city rancher who thinks she should be his.
Audrey learns his secret.
A meddling she would who wants Boyd for herself gets between them.
Boyd is determined to when his mate back.
His big brother the Alpha has his back.
A fun fast paced and steamy shifter romance. Loved Boyd and Audrey ‘s story. Some light BDSM, toys and spanking. A nice slice of life bonus epilogue.
What a great start to a new series!
Boyd is a shifter man who considers himself the black sheep of the family. He is the one always getting in trouble and not doing what’s expected of him. One rodeo changes everything. While he isn’t exclusively looking for his mate, he knows that the moon madness isn’t too far behind, luckily he meets Audrey.
Audrey is a doctor who happens to be moonlighting at the rodeo for one night where she runs into Boyd. She can’t deny that he’s good looking and has the cowboy charm down part but she thinks he’s a player and is ready to settle down.
I was fun to read about these two dancing around each other all the while Audrey is trying to figure out what happened to Boyd. I also liked meeting the others at Wolf Ranch.
I can’t wait to read book 2.
Boyd is such an excellent dirty talker. You want the sex scenes to never end because you can’t wait to see what says next. This is definitely a book where your panties aren’t going to stay dry! Audrey is a fun character. She’s got self image issues, but what women doesn’t? But despite that she’s confident enough to trust her instincts. Even when she finally realizes what Boyd is she comes around. This is a great light, sexy, heart warming read. 5 stars all the way!
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Better than I had hoped for a true mate story.
Vanessa Vale is one of the authors in which I’ll buy her less-than-two-hundred-page books unless it received consistent “one-star” reviews. And for a “mate at first sight” story, it really wasn’t as bad as I’ve seen them.
Trust me, I did enter this novel with trepidation because the heroine was a physician, so the bar’s been set really high in my viewpoint as I am a physician who’s worked many a rural and wilderness setting as Audrey did in this story. No, I’m not an ob/gyn like her, but I’ve probably delivered more babies than most in my specialty. I’m always cringing as what writers will represent a physician, and I was really worried… but I didn’t have that much to worry about, I soon found out. She pretty much either avoided too much emphasis on the actual mechanics of medicine or was quite accurate with her representation. Either she did her research well with someone in the business going over the manuscript, or she has direct experience. Doesn’t matter. I think she represented Audrey just fine, unlike another person’s critique. She does connect with me. She does represent herself and her job quite accurately. I was quite sympathetic with her without being turned off by something inaccurately portrayed. (That’s what sold me on this book!) My suspension of my disbelief wasn’t shaken or shattered. There is plenty of internal head talk going on without being standoffish. And there were too many times I totally identified with her. In the end, I really liked her and wished I could now have what she now has. (I’m widowed. So I like romances. So sue me.)
As for Boyd, he reminds me of the grown man who still acted like a little boy suddenly shaken to become THE MAN for real. He has his own skeletons in his therian closet for more than one shifter. And he’s such a guy. You know the type, girls? The kind you just have to sigh, throw your hands up into the air, and say: “He that way because he’s a GUY.”?? That’s the only way we women can rationalize their actions because they are so disconnected to what women think until they get swatted with a two-by-four across the forehead. But he’s a darling. What can I say? He’s such a guy… And he’s one hundred percent Audrey’s guy and lives up to the disclaimer of “no cheating”. The only thing predictable about him is that once his wolf discovers his true mate, he’s hers completely and protective as hell. I don’t think I’ve read another series with so much alpha growling to ward off would-be competition.
In regards to world-building, I am pleasantly surprised by the writers’ own perception of therianism in this universe in which when a male shifter can go absolutely bonkers from “moon madness” if he doesn’t connect with his mate-for-life in a reasonable time period. If he doesn’t, he becomes more and more like an animal. If that persists, he may need to be hunted down by his pack and put out of his misery. Damn… And we women despair over our own biological clock. These guys have it worse, if you ask me.
I’ve been to Montana. It is as they say: big sky country. I think Renee and Vanessa did a great job in exposition. I could really see these places — Wolf Ranch and Cooper Valley. I do appreciate this. I need to “see” these locales to help convince me to remain in the fantasy being spun by the authors. And, yes, I could even be convinced of the existence of Boyd’s childhood swimming hole/waterfall complete with its own geothermal source of warm water.
As for the villain, I was concerned at first that the ol’ villain template would be followed to the nth degree… Not really. I’m sure it won’t be the last we’ll be seeing/hearing of Jett Markle (an ex-hedge fund investor gone rancher). I hope he becomes a little more complex in future books so that I can say I’ll be respecting Renee and Vanessa in the morning.
Editing… better than the usual I’ve been reading lately but there are still more than a few missing words or wrong words spelled correctly. I cannot say much about how well they researched the bull riding circuit because I don’t have an intricate knowledge. All I can say it was believable to me to the point I wasn’t left wondering what was going on. It’s a fine rope to tread so that enough information is given for the scenario and not leave the reader wondering what was being left out because of seemingly large “empty holes” in the written storyline. (Some “emptinesses” are more noticeable than others.) I was not left thinking that I would have fleshed out the storyline more, and I didn’t feel rushed despite the page count. That was quite satisfactory to the editorial brain.
Would I read this story again. Yes, I would. And I did buy and read the next book in this series which I really liked. So I would highly recommend buying this book (and its sequels) rather than just reading it on KU.
This was a good first in the series book by Renee Rose and Vanessa Vale,,,,
Boyd Wolf was a rodeo star who has been in many shows,,,you see, Boyd is a bull rider, and a very good one, but, he’s also a wolf shifter, part of the Alpha pack family,,,, The Alpha is his older brother, Rob,,,, and he also has a brother Colton, who is in the military,,, and his parents are deceased ,,,, Boyd is just going to go and get ready for his ride on the bull he had pulled that time ,,, but first, he is going to go see Abe who is in the medical tent for a broken finger from helping Bert with his tow hitch ,,,, but the minute he walks in to see Abe, before he gets there, his wolf puts him on notice,,,, he smells her before he sees her,,,, his wolf has found his soulmate ,,,, but, there is a big taboo in their life as wolf shifters ,,,, humans and shifters are not suppose to be is a relationship,,,,, but, his Wolf wants what his Wolf wants ,,,, now you see his problem,,,,,???
Dr Audrey Ames is an OB/GYN or a baby doctor,,,, she has long cascading hair down her back, like a dark waterfall ,,, skin as pale as cream and her eyes are blue ,,, and she wears glasses ,,,,she works at Community General in Cooper Valley in the OB (or Obstetrics) but is moonlighting at the rodeo at this time,,,, she has a younger sister, Marina,,,, who is actually a half sister, Audrey was the product of a one night stand and a single mother ,,,, and now she sees this very sexy Bull rider that seems to really like her,,,, does she trust him enough to let down her guard ,,,, ???
I was very impressed with this duo’s writing ,,,, and the beginning of this series of “Wolf Ranch” ,,,, this story had some adventure, definitely some action and some real steam between these pages ,,,, I would so totally recommend this book to anyone,,,,
Who wouldn’t want to read a book by two of the best PNR authors out there? Rough is a wolf PNR that was so enjoyable to read that I could not put it down! Audrey and Boyd are everything you could want to read. There is heart and soul between these two characters that will keep this story going.
Wolf Ranch is a majestic ranch that is out in the open other than the whole wolf thing. When Audrey helps Boyd out, little does she know that he has super healing powers that he tries like hell to hide. But Audrey is too smart and Boyd is falling in love.
I never want this series to end!
Rough is the first of a series about wolf shifters: three Wolf brothers living on Wolf Ranch. Boyd is the youngest of the three and a rodeo champion. He has low self-esteem, thinking he is responsible for his parent’s death and has been living the life of a player until he sees the human Dr. Audry Ames, who he immediately recognizes as his fated mate. They overcome many troubles before Boyd is relieved of his guilt and his big brother, the Alpha approves of his marriage to Audrey.
Really enjoyed this action packed, sexy, fun and emotionally thrilling adventure filled with dangerous and exciting charters, witty dialog, heart racing twists and undeniable passion. Highly entertaining and emotionally thrilling journey!
A new series – although it was not exactly what I’ve come to expect from this author but that is probably to be expected as it was co-written with another author, so that will explain the slightly different tone to the book and story. Still an enjoyable read and a new world to discover – I will keep an eye out for the next in the series.
I love it when a book doesn’t have silly conflicts to keep a story going. Rough works exceptionally well because it has relatable characters and because its conflicts make sense. Its protagonists are both outwardly accomplished people—Boyd is a champion bull rider and Audrey is an ob/gyn doctor. But Audrey is insecure about her weight and isn’t great with guys, while Boyd has always considered himself the lazy charmer, lesser than his three brothers—even though he’s a national bull-riding champion.
You see, Boyd is also a wolf shifter (this isn’t a spoiler, it’s revealed early on). And that means he has extraordinary healing powers. That’s a wonderful asset for a bull rider—unless it’s discovered by regular humans. When Boyd is gored at a contest where Audrey is the doctor on call, she inadvertently begins to discover his world. And Boyd realizes, shockingly, that his mate is…this human doctor.
I loved both Audrey and Boyd for their intrinsic goodness and care for other people. Audrey has a doctor’s attentive nature, while Boyd will do anything for his clan and family. I also liked Audrey’s gradual introduction to the wolf shifters, and how the efforts they have to go through to hide themselves in the human world becomes the crux of several plot points in Rough.
I really liked that the conflict was between these two people’s natures, not their characters, and that who I thought would be the cardboard villain at the start of the book looks more like a long-term antagonist over the series. Rose and Vale tantalizingly hint at other characters through mechanisms as unusual as phone calls and emails, and the world they craft in Rough is one I’m anxious to return to soon.
This book is winning on many levels, and a great start to a new series. Give Rough a chance—after all, how can you resist a bull-riding wolf shifter?
Boyd Wolf. Rodeo Star. Black Sheep of his family. Screw up in his own mind. Wof Shifter. He knows what he is and what he isn’t and that his job is to always protect his pack and never reveal what he is to a human. But, just one minute in the same room as Aubrey Ames, and Boyd knows she is his mate, even if she is a human.
Audrey Ames. OBGYN. Fill in as the rodeo doctor. All human and lacking in self esteem. She knows she shouldn’t fall for the rodeo champ, but there is something about him that has her intrigued . . . especially after he is injured and then leaves the hospital against doctor’s orders with an injury that doesn’t seem to be as bad as she thought it was.
These two know they are no good for each other, but what if they can’t stay apart?
I’m super excited for this collaboration between Vanessa Vale and Renee Rose. Boyd and Aubrey were a really interesting couple. There are lots of misunderstandings and hurt feelings as Boyd isn’t sure how to tell Aubrey the truth of who he really is, causing trust issues as well. Aubrey is afraid to believe she is enough and Boyd is terrified he’ll never win his mate.
While these two struggled with how to make it work, I loved that they had more in common than they thought emotionally. They both wanted everything out of a relationship, including the white picket fence, a yard with a swing and lots of babies. But it is Boyd who is the standout character for me in this story. He grew so much as a character in this book from how he felt about himself, and how he thought others saw him, to someone worthy of a mate and the respect of his pack and Alpha.
Rough was a lovely mix of super hot & dirty, but also romantic and sweet! I can’t wait for more from this series as the other Wolf brother’s meet their matches. 4 stars.
Boyd and Audrey’s story grabbed my attention from page one. It’s fun, it’s sexy, it’s lively and engaging. The appealing characters have tremendous chemistry and the excellent writing is standard from these wonderful authors. This romance has a lot of heart and captivated me completely. I loved it. Can’t wait for the next book!
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reader copy of this book.
This was a FANTASTIC book! I hope to read more about this pack. Boyd is a world champion bull rider, he meets Audrey she’s an OBGYN and recently moved to the town. Boyd sees her and knows she’s his mate, one problem…. she’s human and he is not. After getting injured and now having to hide what he is, Boyd stays close to the doc while falling completely in love. Being a normal every day girl it’s hard for Audrey to accept this hot cowboy could really love her. After some misunderstandings and drama the pair come together and you get a full happy ending. Five stars!

Howlingly good!!
Boyd is a tormented soul who hides it behind being a playboy and bullrider and Audrey is a dedicated doctor who longs for a family of her own.
Two separate worlds collide, intense attraction, heat, chemistry, fate and more pull them together. But there are secrets, danger, enemies and traditions to navigate before a HEA can be found! I loved these characters and their connection, great story. I can’t wait to read more from this duo and world!!!!
.
A match meant to be
These two authors have teamed up to create a book that hits it right out of the park. The intensity in this book lasted way longer then the coveted 8 seconds for a bull ride. I love the Boyd is a deep well hidden behind a façade of fun loving playboy and Audrey is content, but not exactly where she wants to be. It is to be expected from these authors, but the chemistry is off the charts and it leads to a HEA that you are not going to want to miss. I really hope these two authors come together again in the future. I can’t imagine anything they create not being fantastic.
Great collaboration and start to a series. I always like to see how favorite authors collaborate, and this first book in the series did not disappoint. It was hot, the storyline was compelling, and it made me want to read more about the supporting characters. It drew me along as if I was part of the story, and I can’t wait to see what these authors have in store for us as the series unfolds. Great read!
I love both of these authors but was a bit disappointed by this book. Audrey is a smart woman yet she doesn’t act that way…maybe it’s her insecurities about herself and love? When Karen, a mean-spirited shifter, tells a lie, Audrey believes her! I found that really hard to believe based on her character portrayed in the book! Still, I’ll read more books in this series..I can’t wait for Boyd’s older brother and alpha to have his story!
* I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book and am giving an honest review.
Boyd is a rodeo champion and also a wolf shifter. The #1 rule is not to reveal to a human. Boyd is exposed to Audrey once he is hurt by a bull and heals within hours. Keeping an eye on Audrey will be no problem for him since he plans on having her as his own. Audrey never thought she’d end up in such a crazy situation. All she wanted was to have a family of her own, now she may get her chance. A steamy good read.
This is a new series that gives us the story of Boyd and Audrey. He is a cocky rodeo champion with a smile full of swagger and en extra large…belt buckle. She is a local doctor filling in for the normal rodeo. His concentration is off for just a moment during his ride and he ends up injured and in the hands of the doc. The problem is he is a wolf shifter…with incredible healing powers…in a small pack. How in the world is he going to explain his lack of injury?
This is the 1st in the series and I’m interested in seeing where it will go.
