Wizard’s Rising by Scott Spotson is an interesting fantasy novel that mixes in political intrigue. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I was intrigued and fascinated. Amanda is just an average young woman pursuing her career. She’s chasing it to the next level with each step. She’s engaged, but it seems that she has blinders on and only is focused on what it is that she seeks to aspire. This fact causes her to lose her relationship. I have to admit that on that front, I honestly don’t feel that much sympathy for her. She never stops to consider the man that she has said yes to marrying. Yet, she is hurt when he says they are through. Based on the little that the story touches on the relationship, the reader will see that she never really attempts to communicate with her fiancee or ask his opinion about anything. I am pleased that Amanda is not totally blind to everything around her. She sees flaws and cracks in the story that the wizards want her and her fellow humans to believe. Thankfully, she isn’t the only one, but I like that she presses forward and tries to maintain a balancing act so that she can hold on to her position. I have to admit that she is in a precarious position and that if she slips up it can end in disaster.
There honestly isn’t much that I don’t like about this book. The author does a good job with the storyline overall in setting the stage for the various characters that we are introduced to. We see the dangers that the wizards themselves present. The wizards want the people of the world to believe one thing when their intentions are something else altogether. I am happy that there are not that many editorial issues. There are some places in the story of where it appears that words are missing, but nothing so serious that it detracts from the storyline.
I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. The way the author starts the story off is immediately gripping and pulls the reader in. The story is hard to put down from start to finish as the author lays out what is happening, what is planned and the dissent that the wizards create by being dismissive and uncaring. There is some romance in this story, but the author never lets this take over the overall storyline.
