I enjoyed this book and the various characters in this book. The twist at the end of this book was quite interesting.
Great second in series. The action just keeps on going as we continue to follow Jace, Rhoa, Salvon, and a cast of others on a new quest.
I offered to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, and the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great series, I can be very critical of narrators. Especially when books have a single narrator required to speak with different voices for multiple characters. Most cannot do it without having some errors where they use the wrong ‘voice’ for the wrong character. Travis Baldree does a great job in narrating all voices this book. It was a very enjoyable listen and I didn’t have any issues distinguishing between characters.
As to the story, I am not one to give a lot of specific story details since I feel you should read the story for that. However, I will say that it is book 2 in a historical fiction series where some of the characters have magic. The author has done a great job at continuing this series. It still has great characters that continue to develop and a story line with l twists and turns. You won’t be disappointed if you give it a try, but I recommend reading book 1 first!
I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I am really enjoying Jeffrey L. Kohanek’s Fate of Wizardoms series. This is a review of the audiobook of Balance of Magic. It’s a lot of fun listening to Travis Baldree narrate the story and he doesn’t exagerate the different voices, which I find can be jarring. On the other hand, some of the voices (especially belonging to the female characters) are almost the same. I still think he does a fabulous job with such a big cast of characters. It helps that the author writes descriptively with just enough information, so it’s easy to identify who is talking and who is thinking to themselves even with the different scene changes and varying points of view.
Whether you grab the audiobook or read it yourself, this series has everything to keep your attention. The pacing is good, the scenes are exciting, and the characters are believable. There’s even a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming! Now I want to know more about that scene, because it opens up a whole bunch of new questions. I’m looking forward to continuing the adventure in Temple of the Oracle (Book 3)!
Balance of Magic (Fate of Wizardoms #2). my seventh read from author Jeffrey L. Kohanek. Picks up seamlessly from the end of the first book. Well-written with intricately developed characters you can invest heavily in and the storyline with its intricate twists & surprises as the tension & suspense ratchets up throughout the book’s length. 342 pages but reads even longer with the attention to detail written into the story. Kohanek’s fantasy worlds have become one of my favorite fantasy reads. I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Travis Baldree. I look forward to reading more in this series. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
A wizard Lord is dead, and there is a group on the run. While running Jace seems to really annoy half the group. They end up getting separated, and then reunited. More fighting and narrow escapes. SO much going on in the book to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I loved watching Jace and Narine verbally spare back and forth. The ending shocked the heck out of me!! I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
The fellowship divided, then reunited, mostly to once again flee for their lives. After the death of Wizard Lord Taladain, there is a power imbalance. It only grows larger when another wizard lord is slain. Princess Narine has joined Jace and Rhoa and Salvon on the run, after being accused of the death of her father. But there seems to be more at stake. Someone has figured out how to divert the power of devotion from one wizardom to another, multiplying the amount of magic in one wizardom. And there is very little time to choose a replacement wizard lord before the next Darkening, so princes and generals face each other in battle viewing for the position rather than risking an appointment. And yet, Salvon believes there is something bigger at play. Does he know more than he is letting on? And who can be trusted to be friend or foe? This was a whirlwind adventure and I read it twice to track how all the characters and wizardoms are interconnected. How many more wizard lords will fall and who or what will replace them? I eagerly await the next part of the saga.
Also, there’s a dragon. More of that, please.
I received a free copy of the audiobook as a competition prize and have reviewed it freely.
Balance of Magic is the second instalment of the Fate of Wizardoms series, and it picks up right where Eye of Obscurance left off. And let me tell you, it does NOT disappoint!
The power struggle between Wizard Lords is evident, and dark schemes and subterfuge are abounding! This book may not feature the same type of focused quest as the first, but it set the groundwork for what I believe will be an epic showdown of an equally epic series!
Following the first book and its excellent world-building, we get to experience even more of it as we – as readers – get to dive deeper into the magic system, and – you guessed it – the Balance of Magic.
The environments and the characters are well-described, and here we get to follow along with all those who were introduced in the first book, as well as a few more! Jace is as snarky as he ever was, and I found myself laughing out loud in several places as he drops his witty comments (“I can be quick” LOL). Narine is the sweetest, yet she is still a headstrong young woman, and (view spoiler)
Rawk, Rhoa, and all the rest are also treasured! The cast is well-balanced and distinctly different, yet they complement each other perfectly!
I’m really enjoying this series, and I’m excited to see where the story is heading! Onto the next!
This is book 2 of the series. The storyline grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept it throughout. The book is well written and characters are well developed. I recommend reading. (I received this book as an arc and am leaving a voluntary honest review)
