Trent McNeil was a classic trust-fund kid until he watched a team of firefighters save his family home. From that moment on, he rebelled against the path his parents were determined to keep him on. Now a San Diego firefighter, he knows he’ll eventually be expected to take over the family empire. But until that day, his only plan is to have fun and enjoy life. After a childhood of upset and … upset and uncertainty, Amy Hodge is going to make something out of herself. She has her future all planned out. She’s starting medical school and is going to be busy…far too busy for a relationship. But she does have time for a quick fling before she buckles down and concentrates on her studies.
Amy quickly realizes that playboy Trent is not all he seems to be. Never relinquishing control and sticking to her plans has done well for Amy, but no one has ever made her want to throw caution to the wind like this sexy firefighter.
Each book in the Under the Pier series is STANDALONE:

I loved the first, stand-alone book in this series, Without Words, so I had a feeling I would love Without Promises, too. I was right! (Can I trademark that as my tagline?) Trent is charming and sexy, and I adore his and Amy’s chemistry. There is something real and relatable about their characters that makes it easy to fall into their love story. They try to keep things light and easy and just have a fling because both are in major transition career-wise, but neither can deny that something special is happening between them. Without Promises is a charming, sexy romance with an emotional and interesting storyline and a sigh-worthy happy-every-after.
**I received a copy of Without Promises from Net Galley in exchange for a honest and voluntary review**
Without Promises by Delancey Stewart is a companion book to Without Words. Since I’ve read both now this book can be read as a stand alone but Rob and Dani are featured in this story as well as Trent’s firefighter friends. Although I loved Without Words, Promises takes a bit to warm up to because of his rich family can be rather snooty.
Amy Hodge has a plan with her life, finish her job as a pharmaceutical rep and relax before starting medical school. When she goes out with her sister and friend, Amber clubbing little does she know that we she meets the bartender or FT Trent they will end up pretend engaged next. I really liked the back story of Amy and her sister Dani and living in their Nan’s house, it was Trent’s family that I grew to dislike a lot. Can Amy and Trent take their fake engagement and build a relationship that will lead to love?
Trent McNeil is your typical trust fund adult rebelling against his father the only way he knows by being a firefighter and refusing to take over for his father when he retires. But McNeil properties own quite a few hotels, restaurants and the bar that Trent works as a bartender on his off nights. When he meets Amy he proposes a coffee date with a possible second one. But when his mother pushes him to meet an old girlfriend who now works for his father, he states that Amy is his fiance’. When his father suffers a heart attack he’ll have to put aside differences with his parents and learn to take over the business. Can he convince Amy that he really loves her when she walks away?
There is a side story with Trent’s sister Elyse that will bring everyone together when she has a health scare as contacts Amy not her brother or parents. When all is said and done I’d give Without Promises a 3.9 star rating.
Another great read from Delancey Stewart! Trent – hot, firefighter, dependent on his parents. Amy – beautiful, changing career paths, independent. Somehow these two come together for a temporary engagement – or is it? As Trent is trying to become the man his parents think he should be and Amy is trying to keep their fling casual, life steps in and makes them see what’s really important. I also enjoyed Without Promises for the San Diego/So Cal setting – I could totally picture the places they were visiting and all the fun times I’ve had there.
Oh wow. To say I wasn’t expecting what this little beauty turned out to be would be an understatement. What we got in this book wasn’t what I expected, it was more, it was better, it was amazing!
Trent and Amy are complete opposites. Trent is rich, gorgeous and has anything he wants on hand. He’s a trust fund kid and knows it. Amy has never had it easy. She’s worked hard for everything she’s got and to get where she is. She appreciates the smaller things and every thing. They’re so different that they work.
Reading Trent and Amy’s relationship grow was absolutely beautiful and then BAM the author goes and breaks your damn heart. Like legit, mine feels shattered right now but I can forgive a little for that ending.
I absolutely adored this storyline and these characters, they’re all special in their own way even the secondary characters, they all fit the role perfectly and I love it.
This is my first read from this author and I’ve absolutely enjoyed it. It had me hooked from the moment I started and is the reason why I was sat up at 3:47 writing this review. (no regrets) I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in the future.
This is a well written entertaining, sweet, emotional romance with great characters. Both Trent and Amy had family issues and childhood unhappiness. Trent’s mother was horrid! But our couple overcomes their issues and find happiness together. A satisfying love story with a minor surprise ending. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
I have read one other book by this author so I thought I would try another since I liked the other one. This one he is a firefighter whom I adore. Trent has quite the story with you following every step. Then enters Amy and the story really gets under way with us getting to set back and soak it all in. The are interesting because they are not the same with having to see how they will go. This is no way predictable with emotions that will come your way. The flow is that you go from beginning to end in no time.
4 STAR FOR WITHOUT PROMISES!! What a great story that keeps you flipping pages. I loved Trent and Amy’s story they are so different, but so perfect. This is my first book by Delancey Stewart and it will not be my last, she is definitely is a storyteller.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.
Trent and Amy couldn’t have come from two different worlds. Really…he has a trust fund and she was in foster care until her Nana took her and her sister in. So when they decide to indulge in a one night fling – Amy knows she needs to keep it at one night.
Well, of course one night leads to a few months. During this time Amy get to meet Trent’s not so warm family and she realizes how different their worlds are. Trent won’t let her distance herself though.
In all of this there’s several struggles going on – the expectations of Trent’s family on him and who he should settle down with; his overly annoying mother; his acting out teenage sister; and then there’s his job. Not to mention Amy is stressing on how she’s going to pay for medical school and keep her own sister happy.
It’s always fascinating to see someone else’s perspective on how things in life are. There’s not a firm this or that way. Sometimes it can be both. Amy just has to wrap her head around being able to have both. In reading this story I struggled with the beginning. It just didn’t grab me like I thought it would. At least it picked up though and then it seemed like I was done in no time.
If you like an opposites attract novel this one should be on your list.
This book had a great storyline. The way it was written, however (I felt) lacked. I’m not sure but it felt a bit amateurish to me. I enjoyed the story but had great difficulty actually staying interested to finish it. Don’t get me wrong. It was good just to me it lacked a little. I stuck with it until the end and do not regret it. It has an amazing end and the conflict and resolution of conflict are all well written.
The story is not original. We have all seen the rich parents controlling their child. This is no different but the execution is.
Trent comes from money but his dream is to be a firefighter. His parents want him to go into the family business of investments and such and in some ways blackmail him into it. Amy is all alone in the world except for her sister and best friend. Her dream is to be a cardiac doctor. She does not have the luxury of money Trent takes for granted. She is trying to figure out how to pay for medical school. Their relationship starts off as a friends with benefits deal but with Trent’s family the way it is, they quickly get thrown into a slightly different relationship they were not expecting but not unwanted. They quickly start to realize that maybe this is what they want. I recommend this story and trully say that if you run into the little rut of not getting completely drawn at first, try and stick with it and you will not regret it.
I had a hard time liking the characters. Maybe more depth into their backgrounds would have helped. They were very awkward and insecure people. The writing didn’t make me care if they stayed together. But I was satisfied with the ending.
Trent is from a wealthy family that expects him to take over the business. He is a fun loving firefighter and playboy for now. Amy is determined to make something of herself by becoming a doctor. She has a fling with Trent but finds out he is more than he seems. Will they be able to form a relationship or will it only be a fling? A great read.
I received an arc and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed Trent and Amy’s romance. With passion, sweetness, drama, angst, love, and heartbreak. a entertaining and enjoyable read. This is a voluntary, honest review.
Trent and Amy
A relationship that started as an instant attraction that soon becomes something neither one expected.
Trent is a firefighter that has decided to make his own way in the world away form his families money. He decided that corporate life may not be for him. Amy is on her way to begin medical school and certainly does not have the time or energy for a relationship . A fling is just might be what she needs and Trent has caught her eye . She makes an attempt to be footloose and fancy free but soon realizes that feelings are getting in the way. Great chemistry . meddling families and surprises lead this couple on a crazy ride !

Without Promises by Delancey Stewart was an interesting read. A trust-fund man with dreams of more and a woman fighting for her dreams at all costs. This is a standalone series of interconnected characters and can be read as a standalone.
Trent McNeil knows that one day he will need to fulfil his family’s expectations, but until then he is determined to live his life as he wants. So, he becomes a firefighter. Amy Hodge is going to be a doctor. That has been her one goal and relationships are not part of the plan. But she is allowed to have fun every once in a while, right?
Amy does not veer off her plan, but there is something about Trent and his determination to win her over. I loved how sweet and charming he was towards Amy. He is a bit unsure of his future, but knows he wants Amy. Then there was the interfering family, secrets and a fake engagement. How will it all end?
What started as a fling of sorts for Amy and Trent turns into so much more. Without Promises was a quick read with a lot going on, but a couple who were drawn to each other. It was sweet and angsty and a bit frustrating, but it kept me engaged.
Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog.
Happy reading!
I’ve read several books by this author and I really enjoy her writing. Here is a fun story about Trent and Amy who decide to have a no strings attached fling as they both don’t like to make promises or commitments. Well things get a bit steamy in this story and life happens. You’ll find some pretty sexy scenes, a bit of family drama and maybe a commitment or two.
I received an ARC of the book from the author for an unbiased opinion.
3.5 stars
Sweet, but with a pinch of angst that keeps you hooked Without Promises was an entertaining read. Instant lust flies right from the start, but the true relationship delivers a steamy slow burn that had me bouncing between so many feelings. From absolute swoon to flat out frustration, no matter what I was feeling I couldn’t stop reading. Two vastly different people, yet similar in many ways Trent and Amy both had me riveted to their story.
With their immense chemistry, but neither wanting a commitment Trent and Amy are both up for a simple fling. As they spend more and more time getting to know each other and feelings turn into much more it seems like every aspect of their lives is working to keep them apart. From controlling families to future careers and a good bit of second guessing an fear these two had so many hurdles to jump. Every ounce of pain and frustration was worth the sweet love that bloomed between them though.
Without Promises is the second standalone book in the ‘Under The Pier’ series by Delancey Stewart. And, even though it is the second book in the series, it’s my first by this author. I have to say, I struggled a little bit as there are some references made that are obviously covered in book 1 (Without Words).
Without Promises is about Trent McNeil, a part-time firefighter/ bar owner, who’s also a trust fund kid and Amy Hodges, a pharmaceutical agent on the cusp of changing careers.
They meet at Trent’s bar and he is attracted to her and wants to get to know her better. Amy has a lot of hangups from her past. Trust being one of them.
She agrees after some little persuasion to have a no commitment fling for summer before she knuckles down and starts med school. But what started as a fling so became more… a lot more.
While I liked the story well enough, I didn’t love it. The characters were good, but not great, they felt a little stilted at times. Trent especially. Yes, he was super sexy… eventually, when the story called for it. He was supposed to be this big alpha man, but he came off as a bit wishy-washy to me with no backbone to stand up to his overbearing and interfering mother.
Amy’s future seemed to be set out for her, but with money worries, she didn’t appear to be as ready as she should be. Her head wasn’t truly in the game.
I guess you could say I didn’t connect with the characters or the story. It all just lacked lustre for me, so maybe that’s why it felt like the author was writing the story to a set timescale for when certain things should happen, i.e, the first kiss, first time they had sex. And for a story about a fling that was supposed to be ‘all about the sex’, it took its time happening.
Yes, there was more to it, and the characters but it just didn’t gel for me and that makes me sad. Maybe once I’ve read the first book in this series and came back to this one I’ll feel differently.
