I have read extensively on the Battle of Britain but this inside account brought much new information. I highly recommend and bought copied for gifts to my friends with historic interests
Maybe a bit technical for some, but a fascinating read about two months in 1940 where about 3,000 RAF fighter pilots saved England from defeat from the Nazis. Korda does an excellent job detailing how Air Marshall Hugh Dowding’s strategic plans helped defeat a stronger enemy. Also of interest was how personal jealousies threatened to disrupt a …
Good characterization of Battle of Britain.
Well written
History as it should be. The Battle of Britain as military history. Most accounts I have read have been great, but generally told from the pilots standpoint. That is great, but this author tells the story from the command leve. I found it to be very difficult to put down. I learned a lot.
Excellant book.
This is a dense history of the air defense of UK during the battle of Britten. It deals with both the politics and and development of technology of the time and how the Fighter Command held off the Luftwaffe long enough to make a cross channel invasion by the German forces impossible — too late in the season for favorable weather to make the …
Very well-written military history! Thoroughly enjoyed learning about the behind-the-scenes preparations England was making in the lead-up to the Battle of Britain. Re-assessing figures like Chamberlain is one of the excellent depths that this book goes into during this author’s exploration of an otherwise well-known story.
This book tells the tale of a dedicated public servant, who thought and acted in the shadows. We all are in his debt.
Excellent, detailed, and well written.
well-written
If the reader can overcome the anti-US bias of the author, there is lots of good info that I haven’t read before. I’m going to the UK in June and am reading all I can about the Battle of Britain, so I’m already pretty current on the topic. Definitely recommended, just be prepared for some “bent facts” to justify knocks on the US and, to a lesser …
It seemed accurate to me and gave a lot of information I had not seen before
in other books or presentations I had read or seen on this subject.
Excellent book about the Battle of Britain from the air battles to the behind the scenes political battles.
Fascinating inside info on the political aspects of the Battle of Britain and how the outcome could have been so different but for a few key decisions on both sides.
Fascinating history, extremely well researched and written. He also tells the story from both sides with what seems like no bias.
Great background to the Battle of Britain. I really liked learning the behind-the-scenes information.
Michael Korda does his usual very good in depth examination of a very interesting time in WWII. I very much enjoyed this and read it because of the wonderful biography of Eisenhower Korda did.
Well written with a combination of personal and technical detail, including unknown facts about mistaken views held by either the English or the Germans during the Battle of Britain.
This is the best book on the big picture angle of the battle of Britain that I have read. The author did a superb job of showing all the players faults and strengths. He also seemed to really get the view from the cockpits and share it with the reader.
