“Eugene Sledge became more than a legend with his memoir, With The Old Breed. He became a chronicler, a historian, a storyteller who turns the extremes of the war in the Pacific—the terror, the camaraderie, the banal and the extraordinary—into terms we mortals can grasp.”—Tom HanksNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERIn The Wall Street Journal, Victor Davis Hanson named With the Old Breed one of the top … Davis Hanson named With the Old Breed one of the top five books on epic twentieth-century battles. Studs Terkel interviewed the author for his definitive oral history, The Good War. Now E. B. Sledge’s acclaimed first-person account of fighting at Peleliu and Okinawa returns to thrill, edify, and inspire a new generation.
An Alabama boy steeped in American history and enamored of such heroes as George Washington and Daniel Boone, Eugene B. Sledge became part of the war’s famous 1st Marine Division—3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Even after intense training, he was shocked to be thrown into the battle of Peleliu, where “the world was a nightmare of flashes, explosions, and snapping bullets.” By the time Sledge hit the hell of Okinawa, he was a combat vet, still filled with fear but no longer with panic.
Based on notes Sledge secretly kept in a copy of the New Testament, With the Old Breed captures with utter simplicity and searing honesty the experience of a soldier in the fierce Pacific Theater. Here is what saved, threatened, and changed his life. Here, too, is the story of how he learned to hate and kill—and came to love—his fellow man.
“In all the literature on the Second World War, there is not a more honest, realistic or moving memoir than Eugene Sledge’s. This is the real deal, the real war: unvarnished, brutal, without a shred of sentimentality or false patriotism, a profound primer on what it actually was like to be in that war. It is a classic that will outlive all the armchair generals’ safe accounts of—not the ‘good war’—but the worst war ever.”—Ken Burns

This is the finest soldier’s story ever written.
This book was brought to my attention while listening to my newest podcast obsession, Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History. Now, I know I can never truly appreciate what the veterans of any war had gone through, and this book didn’t change that, BUT, it was written by a soldier on the frontlines of the Pacific Battles. Not a general standing at the back, …
This book helped me to understand the hardships and atrocities of fighting in World War II. We often romanticize WWII, but this book brings the stories down to a very personal, very genuine level far from the ticker tape parades and brass bands. This book paints a vivid, gritty picture of war that has stuck with me for years. If you watched …
Great book
Well written by a man who was there.
I loved the respectful, honest, down-to-earth goodness of the author and his views on the war. He was not hesitant to admit his fear in combat, the awful physical state of being at war, and the emotional toll. I have read other war stories, but this one is the best at relating the situation of the ordinary soldier.
great book, an excellent portrayal of life in the Corps in WWII.
This is a tough book to read: too true, too real. Gave me nightmares….almost. But it did bring back some negative memories from a combat tour I had in Laos.
Semper Fi
The greatest generation being formed in the fearsome firestorm of the Pacific Island battles of world War11, told by the men that were there.

A Marine’s experiences in the Pacific War. Should be required reading for every member of Congress. This is war as it really is…horrifying and brutal.
Excellent…..please remember….always….that these are men were 18 …19…and 20 years old and fighting for our freedom and exhibiting such outstanding leadership and heroism thatit is hard to imagine and comprehend in the world of today…..My father as a young 18 year old Marine fought on Solomon and Mariana islands….His words of wisdom to …

Having read so much about Guadalcanal, this book added a few more details and facts I wasn’t aware of. The book was so detailed and written from the heart. It was so much more than a diary or an historical accounting of the battles. This was a pure great true story
Excellent account
