Dandi Daley Mackall’s With Love, Wherever You Are is a stirring and emotional WWII novel. I became invested in the characters, seeing the war through their eyes and circumstances. I smiled often, and more than once, I cried. Already I miss spending time with Frank and Helen and the doctors, nurses, and patients who surrounded them, all of them ordinary people thrown into extraordinary and often painful circumstances. Put this novel on your Must Read list for 2017.
World War II stories are endlessly fascinating. I enjoyed “The Story behind the Story” at the end, which includes photos, even more than the historical fiction. The book also includes great Discussion Questions.
Beautiful story based on the real life love story of the author’s parents, who met as they served during WWII
When I say “Happily ever after”, I don’t mean that it was an obvious ending. This is a WW11 story about a doctor and a nurse, who are enlisted and stationed in different places. I’ve read a lot of WW11 books (and love them!) but t his one was a little different in the way it showed the uncertainties for the medical staff — with lots of back and forth letters between the two — and with all the misunderstandings that can happen in war. I didn’t know until I finished the book, that it was based on a true story of the author’s parents. She wrote and published it after both of them died, with the use of a trunk full of their letters, which she had not read until then. Good book!
Perhaps being a Baby Boomer helped me to enjoy this book. The book is about a romance during WWII. I didn’t live during that specific time, but I’ve heard lots of stories. My family has a long history of military service. For that reason, I could relate to the feelings and circumstances that are portrayed in this book. The military is a special breed of people that many people do not understand. By reading this book, you will gain insight into the passion and commitment our men and women have for our country. The characters were well thought out and the story went along smoothly. A special addition at the end told the reader that much of the story was real and most of the people were real. A lot of the story is told in the letters that Helen and Frank exchanged.
This brings a sad point to mind. History was recreated from these letters. With the advent of electronics, internet, and email (that can so easily be deleted or lost) how will our future generations be able to recreate our personal histories. It may be too late when they realize the value of pen and paper.
“With Love, Wherever You Are’ is what I call a “comfortable” book. It’s one that you can put down, but don’t want to. It’s a book that you’ll look forward to picking up again and again.
I find WW2 novels informative and make me thankful for people who fought for their countries and allies.
Reading this book reminded me of the stories I heard from my parents about WWII. This was a beautiful and inspirational love story. A bit longish but a good read!
