Can this witch survive in a world of magic, possibilities, danger, and love?Ebony Bell owns a cantankerous magical bookstore with a personality like a battering ram. Her best friend is a detective who drives like a bat out of hell. And a tall, dark, handsome, but seriously irritating stranger by the name of Nathan Wall has just walked into her life.Oh, and she’s a witch. A consultant witch, to be … consultant witch, to be precise. She spends her mornings selling books and her evenings investigating magical crimes for the local police department.
While her life is messy, she manages, until one investigation ends in a costly mistake. She reveals her powers to a normal human, and in punishment is severed from her magic for one lunar cycle. If that was her only problem, she would cope, but very soon darkness surrounds her.
Something is after Ebony Bell. She must fight it, or die. And if that wasn’t bad enough, she has to rely on the help, and kisses, of that darn Nathan Wall.

I am now on book 6 of the series. The concept of humans going about their lives while surrounded by magical beings isn’t new, but the characters are interesting and Harry, the wizard posessing a bookshop, is a hoot. In this first volume Ebony comes off as somewhat immature and irresponsible. Watching her come into her own in this and subsequent books, learning to use her magic effectively to deal with perilous situations and learning some life lessons along the way, make for a good read. Warning: I had some issues downloading the last 2 books from B&N for my nook, as did others. Customer support was able to get them to work so be sure to contact them if needed. Not sure if Kindle has the same problem.
This book needs a good editor and an ending. The bones of this story were okay for the most part, but it had a “no-ending” ending and the author layered her writing with so much wordiness, repetition, and constant attempts at making profound philosophical statements on magic, witchcraft, life, death or whatever it was a drudge to read. I was ready to quit on this book after the first third, but stuck with it. The second half of the book was better, but still had the same writing problems. I am sorry, when you are writing in the cozy style, ditch the profound statements on the universe and just get on with the story. Don’t offer four similes or comparisons when one will do and don’t give a long winded philosophical explanation that no one can understands and then follow it with a simplistic explanation that should have been given in the first place. Another fatal flaw for me is that every mystery should have an ending that resolves the case and ties up the major loose ends, this book does not. Although the main witch character is saved from danger and a couple of bad guys are are caught by the end of the book, the reader never finds out who or what was causing all the trouble. Essentially, the mystery is never solved. The ending really fell flat and left most of the questions raised in the story unanswered. This book is just a set-up for the next book in the series which may or may not resolve all the issues left hanging in the first book.
A cute, quirky read that explores taking control of your life by declaring your ambition. It’s not my usual kind of book but it kept my attention and I’m now reading book 2 in the series. It reminds me of CJ Archer’s Ministry of Curiosities series which I loved!
My disappointment is my fault. I didn’t realize that this wasn’t a stand alone book until I got to the end…I hate teasers.
This book was good. I liked the power they gave will power and knowing what you want
Don’t like books that make you purchase other books to find out what happens with their characters.
Easy read. Interesting good witch character
I want to know how it ends. Will the knight and the witch end up together?
Awful. The main characters are annoying. Too repetitve. I could not finish.
Not a waste of time. Perfect for meals out by yourself and the bathroom.
the story line was to slow to develop. I read half way through it and stopped reading it
It was poorly written. I couldn’t make it past the first few pages.
Imaginative characters. What’s not to like about a witch coming of age?
