When the going gets tough…
Private investigator, Jill Gooder, has been hired to find a serial killer because, as usual, the police can’t buy a clue. Jill, the not so proud owner of a crazy, one-eyed cat, probably can’t expect too much help from her PA/Secretary, Mrs V, who spends all day knitting.
And just in case all of that wasn’t bad enough, Jill’s just about to discover she’s a witch.
… discover she’s a witch.
…break out the custard creams.

I read this book in one sitting while the power was out during a hurricane. And that’s saying something, because usually I take forever to finish a book. This story was especially charming and kept me turning the pages. I look forward to reading the next one. I can see why this series is so popular!
This book is one of my most favorite series of all time, it’s witty, hilarious, and so easy to read, I defiantly recommend it to people who like a mystery but also want a good laugh
This book was a blast to read. It has magic, murder, mystery, humor, and so much more.
The main character, Jill, is wonderful. She’s smart, sarcastic, and in her own words “opinionated, and difficult to get along with.” Her wit makes this book so great because she is likable and relatable. Also, the running commentary in her head while she’s talking with people is downright comical. There were so many characters that added to the excitement and fun of this story. Just to name a few: Winky, the one-eyed cat; Mrs. V, the “knitter-in-residence”/receptionist; Kathy, the empathetic/bossy sister; and Detective Jack Maxwell, “a**hat.” I’m sure you can imagine all of the fodder these characters provided for Jill to internalize about.
Not only are the characters well-written, but this storyline is so engaging. I was hooked—it had investigations, witchcraft, homicides. Also, the author’s style provides the reader with such good visuals you feel like you’re watching a TV show instead of reading a book. On top of that, it isn’t the typical murder mystery. There are many side plots and twists that keep the reader wanting more.
Overall, I obviously enjoyed this book and feel others will too. Especially if you are looking for a strong female lead, with a kick-butt and take names kind of personality. When I finished reading this book, I was already thinking of when I could start the next one in the series.
What would you do if your birth mother suddenly gets in contact with you on her death bed, to tell you, Your A Witch? Excuse me, I’m a what? Yep Jill Gooder thought she was just an ordinary private investigator, out to solve a murder case. Now she has a second family, of Witches, Aunt Lucy, cousins Amber & Pearl, grandma and a ghostly mother, to go along with her sister Kathy, brother-in-law Pete & their kids Mikey & Lizzie. To top it off, she has the hots for a sexy police detective names Jack Maxwell, they love to hate each other! Read on as Jill tries to solve the murders, learn to be a witch and steer clear of Jack in the process. I enjoyed this book, it was a quick read, with some fun twists and turns to keep it fun.
4 1/2 Stars: A Fun Read
This is not deep insightful writing – it is simply a fun read. And for me it was very fun, fun enough to get a 4 1/2 Star rating!
I loved Jill, the main character, and I loved the way she freely contradicted ‘in her head’ almost everything she said aloud when arguing with the pushy people…and animals…in her life. I have older brothers and I can truly understand it. I had to laugh at many of Jill’s internal comments, and though she may try to fool others, at least she’s honest to herself. I’m afraid I’d do the same thing to the smart-alecky cop, and especially her bossy sister!
It was fun reading how Jill became a witch, and how she was very reluctant to believe it. And unlike that dumb Samantha from “Bewitched,” Jill isn’t afraid to use her powers – with hilarious results. I appreciated that Jill didn’t rush off and do anything stupid while investigating the mystery in the story. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves for most cosy type mysteries. Jill was smart enough to take precautions before she confronted a bad guy. And I have to admit, it sure would be nice to speed up your reflexes, blast things with lightning, or add super strength to yourself once in awhile.
I’m not usually a fan of supernatural stories and characters (i.e. witches, wolverines, vampires, etc) but I’m going for the second book of this series. I can’t wait to see what Jill does next!
This is a reasonably well written cosy mystery, based around a young Private Investigator who suddenly discovers that she is in fact a witch.
The mystery definitely takes second place to Jill coming to terms with her paranormal abilities, and there are some nice moments where she visits her family in the magical town of Candlefield.
For me, this book would be better if the character of Jill was more attractive, the author seems to have tried to make her quirky, but has just made her rather unlovable.
Good read
I’m addicted to this series. Love the characters. They are believable and likable. I also like the snarky attitude of the main character, Jill. If you want a great, fun story this is a great series
I love these stories. Funny, exciting, and well written!
You will enjoy them too!
Awesome read! loved this book and the characters were a hoot. This book was a hoot!! Have read all of the series so far, but it does seem to start dragging after a while and seems to lose focus about main character moving up in the witch rank and gets more into solving murders gets redundant at times
This book is awesome! Read it!!!!!!
Adele Abbott struck gold with her Witch is When series. I love following along with Jill Gooder, PI as she investigates mysteries, gets to grips with her new magical powers and argues with her cat. Every character is unique and fun. Start with this first book and then work your way through the entire series. You won’t be sorry – these books are all divine.
This was just a fun book to read. It was fast-paced. Loved, loved, loved the cat. One of the best cats in cozy mysteries. Wonderful dialogue.
It’s a book about a witch meeting a family she never knew she had and coming into her powers. The heroine’s mortal family is a riot and I loved the knitting administrative assistant.
Therese’s just a hint of a budding romance that promises to be full of tension.
Fun read.
I enjoyed it because it was easy, made me giggle out loud. Wait till you meet Winky!
I love him!
