Witch Cake Murders is the first book in the Sweetland Witch series by Zoe Arden. It’s a cute, fun, and magical mystery.
Oh my what a prologue… It’s impactful for the reader and characters setting the stage.
Ava doesn’t know about her heritage until two zany people arrive in her life, claiming to be her aunts and wanting to take her home to Heavenly Haven.
At first it’s fun being part owner of a magical bakery and learning about her magical nature, but soon the fun is over when people start dyeing and all eyes turn to Ava. I enjoyed the characters, the adventure and the mystery. I didn’t have any clue as to who the killer was until it’s revealed. I also liked learning about Ava’s heritage.
The secondary characters are quirky and interesting. I liked meeting them. I can’t wait to see more of Heavenly Haven and it’s mysterious and humorous witches and humans who live on this beautiful little island together.
Witch Cake Murders is a fast-paced read, with many chuckles, and no clear clue as to who the killer is. It’s a good start to the Sweetland Witch series and I can’t wait to read on.

Welcome to Sweetland Cove. This is one of
the small towns located on the island of
Heavenly Haven. There is another section is
called Mistmoor Point.
The mythology of the island comes from a
1200 year old love legend that produces the
two factions of the island due to broken
marriage and hearts with sides being taken.
Magic practicing witches live here with
some humans.
Ava Fortune was born here. After the murder
of her mother when Ava was a baby, Eli Fortune
(her father) takes his daughter away from
the island as he fears for her life.
He arrives in New York changes their name to
Stone. He set up a business there.
On Ava’s 21st birthday, two familiar eccentric
dressed women come into the restaurant
placing a weird order.
They act like they know Ava. Then her father
rushes out and after speaking with him, they
leave. What is happening? How do they know her?
Ava discovers the truth about who she is
and leaves with the Aunts for Sweetland against
her father’s wishes.
Arrival on the island begins a new and dangerous
life for Ava especially learning she is a witch.
Murders, blackouts, losing her wand, charms
for luck, potions, finding the magical bakery
where she belongs, dark magic, running through
the graveyard makes her life confusing.
The characters involved were colorful, artistically
created, vivid and interesting.
The bakery had three fur babies interacting
within the story: Snowy (Ava’s familiar), Tootsie
(Trixie’s familiar) and Rocky the wolfhound
(Eleanor’s familiar).
The story has an unique plot. It has suspense,
mystery, danger and lots of types of magic with
humor plus some romance.
A good, enjoyable read!!!
I volunteered to read this eBook. Thanks to the
author for the opportunity. My opinion is my own.
This whole series is one I simply can not put down. I patiently wait for the next one to come out. If you are looking for a clean, fun, tear jerking, frustrating, enjoyable read then please pick up this series and start from the first book! You will fall in love with the characters and won’t want to stop reading!
This book felt like an old friend came to visit. The combining of Ava’s story with the Redfern family from the prior book made the book twice as good. Zoe Arden is such a wonderful story teller and the plot was varied and involved. This pairing made for the most enjoyable book. Although I loved the first book in this series, this book brought everything together and laid a foundation for future stories. Loved this book and ordered the paperback to share with a friend. Looking forward to reading more about Heavenly Haven and its residents.
The series is a real Haven of magical fun and mystery. Very smart companion animals, and human and witch characters exploring their lives and loves. Romance is for both young and old, and magic is in all the baked treats.
A yummy sounding place to visit in hard copy or e book.
This book explores Ava Fortune’s background, and shares what she finds out about herself and the many characters who live on this island.
Like cozy mysteries or pet sleuth adventures, this may be a good read for you- or a whole series full of good reads!
“Witch Cake Murders” earns 5/5 Chocolate Love Potion Cakes!
I am so thrilled with Zoe Arden’s first book in her Sweetland Witch series, but she originally penned a delightful novelette, “Cake Spell Disaster,” that I highly recommend as the best place to start your reading journey. Set on Heavenly Haven we get acquainted with this magical island and its mysterious legend along with a few witches and warlocks and humans who live in Mistmoor Point and Sweetland Cove. We are also introduced to some interesting character dynamics, competing bakeries, magical extracts, and at the end…a clue! This all whets one’s appetite for the further adventures in “Witch Cake Murders,” where Zoe paints a more elaborate and absorbing story weaving dark magic, family secrets, and a young woman finally taking her place in the community. Ava Rose Fortune is a strong woman, thanks to her father, who is desperately trying to uncover the truth in her family’s secrets, again, thanks to her father, but the recent multiple murders putting her as the main ‘person of interest’ forces her to be clever and investigate on her own. The magic, the witches, the talking animal familiars all work well…no childish hocus pocus here. Zoe creates a wonderful magical community filled with some endearing and some fiendish characters and an engaging multiple murder mystery. Then “Wham!” she hits you with a stupendous conclusion! I am hooked, and can’t wait for the next enchanting journey.
