Wishful Thinking by Helen Harper a five-star read that you could wish on as it will come true. This is the first in a new series and I am sure the rest will be amazing also, as this author always writes amazing faeries, I don’t know but I am afraid to admit Saffron may just be the new fave. From Dope Faery to Faery Godmother, no one else could do better. I loved how there was this whole world of different types of faeries, running around doing their jobs like everyone else, making us see boogeymen and creating rainbows and the like, what better world of thinking of people doing a regular 9-5 creating wishes and amazing things. Throw in a handsome devil and you have a story that is a wish come true.
Ok, Helen Harper, you had me at “it’s not all glitter and glass slippers” at the Office of Faery Godmothers. Nevermind the issues our heroine, Saffron Sawyer, has with Jasper, the Devil’s Advocate. All I can say is that, despite
Wishful Thinking (How To Be The Best Damn Faery Godmother In The World (Or Die Trying), Book 1) having faery godmothers going missing, this is a totally fun book. (Oh yes, it’s also well-written and with an excellent plot). Really, total fun, and who doesn’t need that? Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
4 What if Faeries were real? PN mystery
Issues of accidents, suspense, kidnapping, politics.
Author Helen Harper brings readers an exciting Fairy tale about how one person can make a big difference in the lives of those around her. I appreciate this story’s main character, Saffron’s use of empathy to disarm her foes considering all the hate that’s going around recently. She is a great example of the best to all with her cleverness, heart, strength, determination and moral ethics. She has her failings but mostly trys to do her best in what she does and is an all-around well-written hero. All the other characters grow rounder as the story progresses including the misguided villians in this character-driven story.
The setting is close enough to our own to anchor characters and plot action to readers’ ability to picture them after being given just enough discription to allow our own minds to fill in the mental movie without working too hard.
Finally, this reader appreciates that this was a kidnapping suspense rather than a murder mystery. We as humans should care who-done-it way before situations decline to the point of death. Thank you.
This is the first of Ms.Harper’s work that I have read and I hope to enjoy more of it in the future.

Saffron is the best at what she does but it’s not enough. She wants to be a Faery Godmother. She has what it takes but she has the wrong pedigree. To prove she deserves a silver wand she teams up with the Devil’s Advocate to find the missing. Can they pull off solving the mystery or will Saffron never reach her goal? Good read with fun and exciting adventures

The new How To Be The Best Damn Faery Godmother In The World… Or Die Trying series is everything you’d expect from a Helen Harper story. The story is full of amazing characters with unique names, events that cause moments of riotous laughter, mysteries that have to be solved, danger lurks around every corner and, of course, there’s plenty of Magic.
Saffron Sawyer is a dopey faery who has just been offered a new job, one she’s been wanting for a long while. Her new job is a position with the Faery Godmother department, but her dream job turns out to be anything but a dream. Most of her new co-workers are very unwelcoming and have enough bitterness to share. It’s a terrible time for Saffron to start a new job, though, because Faeries are disappearing and no one knows why, or who’s causing it. One of her new co-workers is the Devil’s Advocate (No, that’s not his name, it’s his title. His name is Jasper.) teams up with her to try to solve the mystery of the disappearances.
(***Jumping up and down with joy***) I loved the addition of the Faery Godmothers having their very own department within the magical community. It makes it seem so much more, well… for lack of a better term, Real! Also, Saffron seems to have some major mojo with the Devil’s Advocate and I enjoyed reading their interactions. This book is exciting and fun to read. I look forward to reading book two. I can’t wait to see what happens with the characters next.
This is no mouse world glitter only happy ending story. This is a world in which the awkward dope fairy finally gets a chance with the fairy godmothers and still gets penalized .
Fairies are apparently pretty twisted and vindictive. Trolls seem to be at war for some reason, though I have no idea why.
Insightful and cutting – and funny despite being more than a bit cuttingly real.
It seems more trouble lies ahead- what fun!

ONE ENTRALLING EXPERIENCE!!!
Crikey mates! Tight spaces between a rock and dust. Yeah, thats not a mistake. Jumping head first into peril and finding out your barely hanging on. A rollercoaster ride of inadvertent events and vexing circumstances launch a full range of swirling emotions bursting into play front and center. Struggling through all the trials and tribulations, twists and turns, along with a few glitches and near misses bring this bad boy blazing to life beautifully. All the drama, uncertainty, fear, danger and suspense increase steadily as tension spirals while the tale unfolds. The characters are strong, authentic and believable with depth and qualities that pull this little jewel together flawlessly. The scenes are so vividly described it paints one amazing backdrop. Fantastic job Helen, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
I’ve read several books by this author and was never disappointed. That includes this series starter. Saffron is a very interesting character. I admit that at the beginning I wasn’t sure I was going to like her, but by the end of the book, I adored her. I like her love interest, too, as well as the minor cast of characters. This was a great book filled with a unique world, fascinating characters, a great mystery plot, and wonderful action. I can’t wait to read more in this series and learn more about the characters. I highly recommend this book and was given a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I guess when we think about Faery Godmothers we imagine genial , white haired, mature ladies who wear spectacles above their rosy cheeks. Well Saffron is young, has brown uncontrollably curly hair and tons of attitude. Oh and did I mention she’s the newest recruit to the Faery Godmothers ? It’s just too bad that she has been set up to be bait as they struggle to find out just why so many have been abducted !
Saffron is yet another character that this author easily brings to life. She’s capable, smart and loyal and it just so happens that her dream is to become a member of the elite Faery Godmothers. Imagine her excitement, her deep joy when she steps through those hallowed doors only to discover that she not only has to prove herself but isn’t really wanted there ! It’s just as well that no matter what goes wrong Saffron is the most doggedly determined Faery Godmother they have ever seen !
It’s very easy to like Saffron and she’s written as a character who genuinely cares about other people. Yes I could say that occasionally she’s irreverent and her mouth gets the better of her but it only made her feel more real. The supporting characters added just enough to help bring this world to life but obviously the real crux of this story is just exactly why are Faery Godmothers going missing ? No spoilers here so all I can say is I enjoyed this story and look forward to more set in this world. I’d perhaps like a tad more world building and explanations about the magic but I thought the human interest story that run through this was beautifully done. All in all an entertaining read and one that frequently made me smile.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.
This book is the first book that I have read by this author.
I really enjoyed this book and the fact that there are dope fairies is something that I think is great
Saffron is amazing how she doesn’t let anyone bully her and turns it around on them, throughout the book, as she is not accepted as a faery godmother because of her heritage
But it is Saffron that is the one that solves the case, with the help of the Devil’s Advocate, who is a love interest
This book is well written and thoroughly enjoyable
Wishful Thinking (How To Be The Best Damn Faery Godmother In The World (Or Die Trying) #1) by Helen Harper is a smart and sweet fairytale/cozy mystery. Saffron Sawyer is sharp and determined and I simply adore her. Saffron is the best at what she does but wants to become a Faery Godmother. She has the right stuff but not the right pedigree. When she is given the chance to become a Faery Godmother she is determined to be the best damn Faery Godmother in the world (or die trying). Join Saffron as she and the Devil’s Advocate join forces to find the missing and show that just because she wasn’t born with a silver wand doesn’t mean she wasn’t born to do the job. I really enjoyed this story and am really looking forward to the next installment in this series.
Wishful Thinking by Helen Harper can be classified as an urban fantasy and as a supernatural suspense novel. It is the first book in a new series by this author and is set in the UK.
Our protagonist, Saffron Sawyer, is a dope faery (the lowest job classification for faeries), but she aspires to be a Faery Godmother which is viewed as an elite position and is often hereditary. Surprisingly, Saffron is given the opportunity to become a Faery Godmother. With this premise, the story is off and running.
Saffron wants to be the best Faery Godmother ever, but the real situation makes this difficult. While this is a fantasy, it deals with some deeper topics ranging from bullying to deceit to nepotism to drugs to kidnappings. Saffron is determined to prevent any more kidnappings.
This novel is original, has a superb heroine, and a great set of secondary characters. There are some twists and turns, a mystery, a little comedy and even a little romance. (By the way, a drug faerie works to keep their clients from moving on to more dangerous drugs and, if possible, get them to go into rehab).
This is a relatively fast-paced novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it except that there was some excessive swearing in it that I felt detracted from the storyline. If that had been eliminated, it would have been a 5 star rating for me. This is a great start to a new series and I look forward to book two.
Many tanks to Harperfire, BookBuzz.net, Helen Harper and Net Galley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
