In her first work of contemporary women’s fiction, bestselling author Kay Bratt draws on her own life experiences to create a raw, yet inescapably warm, novel about friendship and a wary heart’s unexpected capacity to love.A hungry, stray dog is the last thing Cara Butter needs. Stranded in Georgia with only her backpack and a few dwindling dollars, she already has too much baggage. Like her twin … baggage. Like her twin sister, Hana, who has broken Cara’s heart one too many times. After a lifetime of family troubles, and bouncing from one foster home to another, Cara decides to leave it all behind and strike out alone—on foot.
Cara sets off to Florida to see the home of her literary hero, Ernest Hemingway, accompanied only by Hemi, the stray dog who proves to be the perfect travel companion. But the harrowing trip takes unexpected turns as strangers become friends who make her question everything, and Cara finds that as the journey unfolds, so does her life—in ways she could never imagine.

I really liked this book. It’s like the dog picked her and was very protective of her.
The bond they create is heart warming.
Book started with slow reading. It seemed that the conclusion went on too long and left some unanswered questions.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.
I liked this book because I live in Key West & part of the book is set there. For me it was very evocative- not great literature- good beach book
Enjoyed book for most part. Interesting journey with main character, literally and emotionally, as she learns she is only responsible for HER life.
Loved this book and the way it was written!
This is the first time I have read anything by this author and loved it. Great characters and a really interesting story…..looking for more from this author!
Loved this book! I wish there was a sequel.
I TOTALLY LOVED THIS BOOK. A REAL PAGE TURNER. A MUST READ FOR ANYONE.
This book is an eye opener to the trials and triumphs foster children may experience along life’s journey thru adulthood and the people and animals that they interact with.
In spite of her difficult life, it was great to watch Cara grow and change. Nothing was easy, but she made it eventually.
First, I’ll read anything that has a dog in it. I really did enjoy this book. It reminded me of the goodness of people and how important it is to open yourself to others.
I enjoyed the relationship that she built with the dog, Hemi. Her childhood could have been more descriptive so that the reader would understand the neglect, abuse and challenges that she and her sister faced.
I really enjoyed this book. The journey not only in miles that was taken. It made me sad to think there are people actually living the nomadic life this young lady went through. The relationship that grew between woman and dog was very touching to me. I have seen this closeness of souls between dogs and people and have been blessed to actually experience it in my life. It’s a great read. Would highly recommend it.
This book will make you think regardless if you are a twin or just have siblings. Being an orphan or just living from day to day. Truly a good read
This book tells a ztpry
I so loved this book.
A beautiful, heart wrenching journey about a young, untrusting girl who is running away from something awful.
Cara decides to flee to Key West, Florida. Along the way she picks up a dedicated companion, who she names Hemi. He becomes her best friend and teaches her to love and trust.
Through difficult experiences along her travels, she finds that she needs people to help her get to her goal of Key West, and finds many wonderful assistants.
Be aware: you will need tissues. A must read for anyone who loves dogs, life and challenges.
Cara Butter is running away from everything she knows in search of a place to hide from her past and herself. Along the way she is befriended by Hemi (short for Hemingway), a homeless dog, and many friends who help her to realize family is so much more than blood.
Wish Me Home is definitely one of my favorites in recent women’s fiction. Kay Bratt uses so much compassion and understanding to portray her characters lives. It is a face paced story telling the power of healing, longing, kindness, mans best friend, forgiveness, and a little bit of love.
We know the heroine is on the road, running from something. We don’t learn what that something is until very late in the story. On the way, her view of humanity is shaped by the people she meets — and by a dog who becomes her traveling companion. I liked learning about her ultimate destination, a place to which I have never been. And I liked the social conscience presented in this book especially regarding dogs. I admit I still had a question or two at the end of the book, but I think the open-ended story was quite intentional.
This will go down as one of my all time favorites! An absolute must read. Kay Brat really brings the characters to life and immerses you in the story.
