In her first work of contemporary women’s fiction, bestselling author Kay Bratt draws on her own life experiences to create a raw, yet inescapably warm, novel about friendship and a wary heart’s unexpected capacity to love.A hungry, stray dog is the last thing Cara Butter needs. Stranded in Georgia with only her backpack and a few dwindling dollars, she already has too much baggage. Like her twin … baggage. Like her twin sister, Hana, who has broken Cara’s heart one too many times. After a lifetime of family troubles, and bouncing from one foster home to another, Cara decides to leave it all behind and strike out alone—on foot.
Cara sets off to Florida to see the home of her literary hero, Ernest Hemingway, accompanied only by Hemi, the stray dog who proves to be the perfect travel companion. But the harrowing trip takes unexpected turns as strangers become friends who make her question everything, and Cara finds that as the journey unfolds, so does her life—in ways she could never imagine.

Good characters and enchanting storyline
I didn’t want it to end. I was so into the characters.
If I could give it 4.5stars, I would have. As a long time dog mama, I loved the story of Cara and Hemi finding each other. Aaawwweee!!! Dogs can be such incredibly wonderful companions; I speak from experience when I say that. My only complaint was Hana; didn’t like her character and what happened to the mother?
Beautiful and heart wrenching story. Very well written
I love this story. It tells of a young lady that is running from her life trying to find herself. There are good people that try to help her on her way and a few bad people that cause the road to be rough. Until a person is ready to face their past, and look to what the future can hold for them, they will continue to run. Fortunately, this does have a HEA
If you have ever been through the foster care system you would be able to relate. There are some true life lessons in this book. Just because times get tough and things always seem bad there are good people in this world to help you out along the way. Don’t give up your dreams and keep pushing yourself to something better.
A beautiful book, a story told by by Cara. Cara is running away after a catastofic event.Cara is a twin this is her travels to to Key West by foot after her car breaks down. Her goal is Hemingway’s home. She befriends a stray dog who becomes her loyal companion, naming him Hemi after her favorite author.Growing up in foster homes and being bounced around led Cara to have trust issues, although the kind people she met thru her journey she started breaking down a lot of her trust issues.great story!
Such a good read! It has a little bit of everything and what I love is how,it made me think. I honestly think I could have read this in one sitting as I couldn’t wait to see what was next.
I loved this book. I found myself rooting for Cara & Hemi as they trekked across to reach their destination of Key West, Florida to see where the famous author, Earnest Hemingway, lived. How the trip forces her to re-think in life-changing ways makes for an intuitive, wonderful story. Recommend for an adventurous read.
I have read all Kay Pratt books and have recommend her to all my friends who read, she is an amazing writer and her books stay with you long after you have finished them, one of the must read authors
Heartwarming.
A young woman’s journey where she learns how to open herself up when she meets up with a scruffy dog who steals her heart as he joins her journey, helps keep her safe, and helps her open her heart to trusting others again. It’s really a lovely story and one I enjoyed so much and recommend.
I like to read about romance and resilience, anything is possible if.
How can you not love Cara and Hemi! I am a dog lover so the cover alone suckered me into this book and before I even finished the first chapter I knew I would waste a day reading the whole thing. (Not that it was wasted by any means as I really enjoyed the story, just didn’t get things done on my day off as planned.) I love how they learn to open themselves up and trust people along their journey. Also, the bridge scene in the book with the boys is a sad ugly truth of this world. Let’s just say everything happens for a reason and thankgoodness for Hemi!
I loved it! From the first chapter it rolled over me. I laughed. I cried. I felt at home with it.
Family is seldom easy.
I. Love. This. Book.
It is so refreshing to read a story that has a dog that doesn’t die!
Kay Bratt’s writing is exquisite. Cara, the main character, shows real character development throughout the story. Her epic journey teaches her that not all people are bad. Best of all, she gets a new best friend in the process.
If I could give more than 5 stars, I would!
Enjoyable
Enjoyed it very much
A little too much like a romance novel for me. I like the dogs and the adventure. It’s a teensy bit trite, but not sickening. It would probably have more appeal to a young adult reader.
Learned another perspective on fostering and then dealing with the outcome as another adult. Along with the healing her lost dog provided.
