I guess you would consider this a spin off series to the Lunar Chronicles. Really, it feels more like a continuation of the series only in Graphic Novel form, so be sure to read the Lunar Chronicles first.
In the graphic novel, we follow Iko as she works as a special agent to help Cinder with some situations on Earth. If you loved Iko in the original books, you’re going to love this one too. She’s still the same quirky, fun, opinionated android that she was in the series. The other characters that you’ve probably come to love in the Lunar Chronicles are back as well…we get to see Cinder, Kai, Cress, Thorne and even Scarlett and Wolf! Oh, and even Winter and Jacin are there so it really is just like a continuation. There are newish characters to get to know as well, and situations that will have you really wanting to know what’s next for everyone. There will be a sequel and that’s good because it does leave off on a bit of a cliffhanger.
Basically, if you loved the orignal novels, you’re going to love this addition. If you love graphic novels and futuristic stories, you’ll also love this book…but please do read the Lunar Chronicles first or you will be spoiled.
This is a well done graphic novel. Graphic novels aren’t really my thing. I am a bigger fan of just written words or maybe a few pictures over graphic novels or cartoons. I find that with the graphics there are too many things to try to take in at once and it’s just not my strongest reading ability. I liked how the book reintroduced characters as they came up, at least the key ones, as it has been a while since I have last read the series. The story was fun. I like Iko, so it was fun having a story from her perspective. It’s also fun reading a bit more about what has happen after Cinder is recognized as the true Lunar Queen. I did find the almost monochromatic color scheme of the graphic challenging to read at times as well. Overall though it was just fun to read more in the Lunar Chronicles Series and revisit the characters again.
After reading the Lunar Chronicles, I just had to be extra and read the graphic novels that takes place after Winter and before the last short story of Stars Above. And we get to follow our main character Iko!!!!!!!
It was such a fun read and I felt that it closed up some loose ends of the story.
I ship her with Kinney so much. The make the best awkward hate to love type of relationship ever. We also get introduced to his sister who is very hilarious and she and Iko make a great duo that makes Cinder wear fancy clothes.
That cliffhanger had got me and I am immediately rushing towards the second volume. Overall, this was a fun read and I gave it a solid 4 stars.
I hands-down enjoyed this book. I was already excited to read a graphic novel set in The Lunar Chronicles universe, but when I found out that it was going to be about Iko, I really flipped. Iko is one of my favorite characters who I feel didn’t get a whole lot of development in the series, but then again, there were so many characters and story plots that you couldn’t put too much time into every character without slowing down the story. I think it was a wonderful move on Meyer’s part to make her graphic novel series centered around Iko and her adventures, while still keeping Iko connected to all the other beloved characters in The Lunar Chronicles.
I will go ahead and say that as much as I enjoyed this graphic novel, there was something about it that kept me from completely falling in love with it. If I could have given it a 4.5 stars, I totally would have. The fact that I’m already a comic book fan and I’m already a fan of The Lunar Chronicles made it really easy for me to get into this book, but I’m not sure if it would work that way for someone who wasn’t those things already. I don’t know if I could sell this book to a lot of my hardcore comic book friends if they weren’t already into the Lunar Chronicles and I have a few friends who like The Lunar Chronicles but may not be interested in this simply because it’s a comic book. In any case, I enjoyed this book and this is why…
Did I mention that I love Iko?
There are a lot of underlying themes in this graphic novel just as there are in the entire Lunar Chronicles series. I appreciate the fact that we’re seeing a whole new kind of discrimination being placed upon the character of Iko that many minorities and even women can relate to. I feel like Iko played her part in being the hero of the Lunar Chronicles just as much as the other characters did but because she’s an Android, she’s not seen as equally important to the rest of the world. I love this dynamic of her story and I’m glad that it’s being told in such a way as to maybe open people’s minds.
Can I just say “squeeeee” for a second. I love the fact that there’s going to be a love interest for Iko, at least it seems that way. I don’t want to jump the gun but you can totally see where this is going. I think it’s really cool that even though Iko is an android and she’s probably the most indestructible of her entire crew of friends, her friends still worry about her. Cinder is so worried about her best friend (the android) that she sends someone else, a Lunar, to protect her and be her partner. That’s just so amazing.
And can we just scream “reunion!”. This series is just another reason to keep this Lunar Chronicles story going and I’m not complaining. Like I said, I love the fact that this story is centered around Iko, but I think it’s wonderful that there are cameos and appearances from all of the other Lunar Chronicles characters. I mean, how could there not be; they’re all such close friends after everything they’ve been through.
There’s also a part of me that’s really happy to see these characters drawn visually as opposed to just imagining them in my head. Although I will admit that they do still look different in my head. I like the fact that you can visually see the diversity of these characters. Even though these are retellings of fairy tale characters, none of these characters look like the typical fairy tale tropes. We have Asian characters, American characters, European characters, black characters, human characters, cyborg characters, Android characters, and for the first time, we get to see them all depicted visually. I love it.
So, even though I can’t clearly state why I didn’t absolutely fall in love with this book, I did really enjoy it and I’m going to keep reading this series. I guess it boils down to the fact that I don’t know if I could sell this to all my friends who aren’t already into the series. Despite that, I’d totally recommend this to fans of The Lunar Chronicles series and to any fans of young adult science fiction
OMG, the stories in this graphic novel really made me want to reread the entire series! This series is so close to my heart, and is one of my all time favorite book series. It was nice to get close to these characters again, and I can’t wait to read the next graphic novel in this series! I admit, this bland art style is not one of my favorite art styles, but it was nice actually seeing things unfold. This art is lovely in it’s own way, I just prefer colorful, more detailed art in my graphic novels and comics. Story-wise, I have to say that the “romantic tension” between Iko and Kinny was the best! OMG! The part where she describes how she is feeling when she looks at Kinny is great. I was totally fangirling about it. I thought that it was cute when Cress told her that her skin color looks red. =P I’m anticipating what could be contained in Garan’s file for Iko.
Fantastic continuation of the characters of the lunar Chronicles. The Graphic novel was a welcomed return back into the world I already loved. It was so nice to see the characters again and go on another adventure. Really great effort by Marissa Meyer.
Can’t wait for volume 2!!!
I have to say I was concerned about this book being a comic. There is something to be said for imagining the world rather than having it drawn for you. However, after seeing it, I was relieved. The characters are still the same quirky bunch you got to know from the original set of books and there are parts where the drawings are able to enhance the story. I am really looking forward to the next installment.
