This is by far my most favorite book in the Wired series. Told mostly from Jake’s point of view, Toby Neal has written this in a way that you can almost hear, see, feel and smell the volcano, the lava…
Sophie Ang is a magnet for trouble on a personal and professional level from the three amazing men who would follow her anywhere to the dead bodies that pile up everywhere. Plenty of action, intrigue and sizzle and not just from the flowing lava.
Sophie Ang and her faithful furry sidekick, Ginger, have gone camping on the Big Island of Hawaii, with the intention of examining the pieces of her life and fitting them back together in hopes of feeling whole. Sophie literally gets dragged by Ginger into another crime scene she can’t help but try to solve. Partnering with Sophie is brash and sexy Security Specialist Jake Dunn, who challenges Sophie on many levels. These two, along with Ginger and Tank, a dog they’ve rescued, take us on a ride filled with highs and lows of many emotions from fear to confusion to love, and back again through many others. This is a story filled with adventure, romance, mystery and justice.
Writer Toby Neal has created multi-faceted characters that we can identify with as they explore their own feelings amidst the carnage that humans perpetuate upon each other. Her characters are strong within their frailties, and consistently strive to serve justice to those that have been taken advantage of. After finishing this latest installment in the Wired series featuring Sophie Ang, I look forward to the next intriguing adventure of crime solving amidst the lovely islands of Hawaii, or wherever her adventures take Sophie.
Love this series!!!
There is definitely some vigilante justice going on!!
Betrayal is a hard pill to swallow. A thrilling ride from the first page to the last read. Did Sophie make good choices? I will just have to read on to find out!!
Great character.
Good read
Toby Neal does not disappoint in this series with Sophie Ang! It is great to see the ‘characters’ from her original series (Paradise Crime Series) get their own voices, troubles, romance, and still connect both. I read this in just a few days time (due to Christmas things needing to be done) otherwise I would have devoured it in a couple of days! Thanks for continuing this series.
definitely original concept. enjoyed the setting and intrigue,
I like the writer entertaining and good story teller. Thanks toby
I was given an e-ARC of this book with a request that I submit an honest review.
Honestly, it was a good story as detective stories go but was not on a par with Toby Neal’s Lei Texiera series.
I enjoy detective stories and mysteries and am not a big fan of the Romance genera. In my opinion, there were
really three separate issues in this book. Sophie, the main character is tested to use her knowledge of cyber
techniques to track down what initially appeared to be another missing person case for her and her co-worker,
Jake. It isn’t long before they are deep in a lot more than a missing girl. Following how she and Jake, along with
Detectives Freitan and Wong search through the clues was fascinating.
I honestly believe there was too much romance between Sophie and Jake which, in my opinion, really did not
add significantly to the mystery. And, the other issue I had a problem with was the language, particularly at the
start of the book. I realize cops and criminals do not always use the “King’s English” but, with 4 members of my
family involved with Law Enforcement, the potty mouths are really not that prevalent in real life.
I rated the book 4 Stars based on the detective work involved. I would have rated it 5 Stars except for my
observations listed above.
After reading one Toby Neal, you can’t help but get involved with her characters. Each can be read as a stand-alone, but if you read more, it’s like seeing friends that you’ve missed for a while.
Love all her books
This is a terrific series! I love Sweets! Lol
was a page turner….tough to put down!!
I love this book. The main character is a strong woman with a lot of emotional trauma, but is human to the level you are rooting for her to win.
Love that Jake man!
I made the mistake of reading this book, after being disappointed by this same author once before. I really did not like the main character, Sophie, in this story. She is an emotional cripple and very taxing. The story begins with her finding a murdered family, whom she tells police may have been in Witness Protection-and they have a leak. Surprise! This turns out to be the case-but the author never follows this up or resolves the case. Super Sophie then discovers a connection in a “large number” of missing persons, which leads to a murderous crime family, Sophie to the rescue-she single handedly take them down. As in the other book I read by this author a lot of time was spent on the relationship between Sophie and her partner-and it goes nowhere, simply trickling out, which is not surprising since Sophie already has several other relationships that she is ambivalent about. Oh, did I mention that her mom, whom she believed as in a mental facility in Thailand shows up revealing that she (the mom) is really a spy for the Thai government and tries to recruit Sophie?? This development also is not taken anywhere and just dies on the vine. Sigh, maybe a two star rating is way to generous.
Great series! Highly recommend reading.
Two main characters spend way too much time sharing their feelings about each other with the reader. Otherwise, plot does move along nicely.
Toby Neal has built a group of characters which remain interactive in most of her books. Each of these characters are involved with law enforcement and often cooperate on investigations in the islands of Hawaii. Each has there own strengths and weaknesses and their own histories making them unique and believable. The reader is transported into the culture and landscapes if the islands making your reading experience all the more enjoyable. Each character tends to be serialized in a way to offer many future possibilities once you are hooked into the writing of Toby Neal.
