The color transformed to an insane shade of gold. The feeling of being prey took over her for one terrifying minute. But, something crept forward from the dark recesses of her mind. Excerpt
The impact of the sucker punch sent Louvette to the ground hard. Pain flared across her cheek as it split. The effects of her adrenaline paused as her mother’s words of warning replayed in her mind: Make this school last until graduation. She knew this would break her mother’s heart.
A shout that did not come from her mother took her back to present reality. She hadn’t started this fight, but she knew she wasn’t going to let her butt get stomped, either.
She jumped up. Her fist balled as a blonde pixie of a girl came at her. Louvette dodged her this time and swung her fist straight into the girl’s nose. A solid crunch sounded as her attack landed. Her momentary satisfaction was thrown off along with her balance as the girl fell to the ground.
A large arm separated them as the coach finally arrived to do his job. They continued to kick at each other, looking like barrel monkeys hanging off a barrel.
“Break it up! Lynskey and Mallory report to the principal’s office immediately,” snapped Coach No Clue. No clue was his name because Louvette hadn’t been in his class long enough to learn it.
Dragged down the hallway toward the principal’s office, Louvette was faced with the Queen B, otherwise known as Tiffany Mallory. She began to immediately beg, spawning an eye roll from Louvette. She was a whiny beggar. Just one of many B words that could describe her to a T, but it was the nicest one that Louvette could think of. Her pleading stopped as they arrived at the door of the principal’s office. They locked eyes for a second, hatred flaring toward each other.
“I’m first. I’m on my third offense and I’m not waiting all day for you to get a slap on the wrist,” Louvette said to Tiffany as she darted past her into the office. The only thing that stopped her from slamming the door in B’s face was the creature waiting on the other side of the door.

Winter’s Wolf by Lou Grimes
The first couple chapters took me a bit, but once I got through that the book got so much better. Louvette and her mother Sarah are struggling and having to move often due to Louvette’s propensity to get into fights at school. This all changes when they are given the chance to start over due to a death in Louvette’s family. The new chance isn’t just a new home but a different life all together. As Louvette tries to be a better daughter and not get into fights at school, she finds some amazing friends with amazing secrets that also relate to her anger issues. The story gets you and keeps you guessing what will they learn next.
Ok, the fact that I can only give this book 5 stars makes me sad, I want to give it 15. Not going to lie, I’m a sucker for any story with werewolves or shifters. But Louvette grabbed my attention strings and she yanked hard. This book is so good, and even though it’s a YA, I truly believe that anyone could enjoy it. This book has a little bit of everything in it, and I couldn’t get it read fast enough. I CANNOT wait to read the rest of this series.
Its not like I don’t already have enough series that I must keep up with, but, Winter’s Wolf (The Cursed Series Book 1) by Lou Grimes has been added to the list. This is a great shifter story and if the next ones are as good as this one this will shape up to be a really good series. The characters are all interesting and well tailored. Although there are many characters the focus is on the main ones with just enough information to start your anticipation for the next book in this really excellent series. The romance between Louvette and Arsen is very palpable and so very sweet. Some good clean love without the icky factor, may be what I love about this book the most. A very enjoyable read.
Grimes is a new author for me and I loved every page of this book. Although intended for a YA audience, it is so well written I believe readers of all ages (including this middle age woman) will thoroughly enjoy this paranormal adventure. Louvette is a strong and feisty character that I immediately like from the first page. She has fire and spirit and I immediately wanted to know more about her and her relationship with her mom and her background. You knew it was going to be interesting. But I never quite anticipated each turn the story took. I really enjoyed the story pace and the author’s ability to keep things fresh. Fantasy lovers – this is a must read!
I love shifter reads and this one was unique in the fact that Louvette had no idea of her past, her father or the fact she was a wolf. She has had trouble at every school she has been in and when she lands in Montana she starts to learn of her father, her grandfather, and her past. She finally finds someone who understands her.
This read was full of secrets, lies, angst, and so much action. It will hold your attention from the first sentence to the last. The characters were great. Louvette’s mom will drive you crazy at times but she is just being a mom. Louvette, her friend Cara, and her love interest Arsen are all interesting. I loved all the suspense and action in the story. Can’t wait for the next book.
This is a fantasy book about wolves. It explores the bonds of teen romance and strong bonds of friendship and those of strong family bonds. Louvette has a knack for getting kicked out of schools that she’s been attending. She is left everything from her grandfather who was recently murdered and her and her mom move to the house and estate left to her. Lou Grimes does some picturesque scenes. I look forward to reading more i mean who doesn’t love a good werewolf story.
In this book, we meet Louvette, a teen getting adjusted to new schools but not without getting into a few fights. For the sake of her mom, she was willing to try to fit in but that doesn’t go so well as an attorney informs her she’s the beneficiary of her granddad’s estate at the Blackwood mansion but that mansion comes with lucid dreams that leave her unsettled. Her past begins to unravel as she must decide who she can and can’t trust along the way. I loved the characters from Louvette to her friend Cara and her relationship with Arsen. This is just book one and can’t wait to see what the others have in store!
This is my first book by this author but it definitely won’t be my last. I am looking forward to book two of this series as book one was very interesting. I love a good paranormal book and this author held and kept my interest from the beginning to the very end of book 1. I cannot want to see what she has next in store for us.
Winter’s Wolf by Lou Grimes is the first book in The Cursed series. This is a strong start to a new series with interesting characters.
This whole book was designed to have an intriguing feel about it. From the inheritance to Louvette’s missing father. I thought the characters we strong, which helped with the story. They held their own and made reading about them so easy. I wanted to know what was going to happen to them.
The book was well written and fast paced. It was an exciting story and one I really enjoyed. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I’m so sad that I finished this book it was such a great story! This was a new to me author. I’m literally feeling a book hangover. This was a young adult paranormal romance about werewolves and perhaps other things that go bump in the night. I can’t figure out where to start to describe this book. It was well detailed and it wasn’t over the top. It was about a young teenaged girl struggling with emotions and discovering who and what she is in the scheme of things, falling in love and learning to control the pandemonium of life’s curve balls. The day I finished this book I found out this was the author’s debut novel. So now I’m following the heck out of her praying for the next installment to hurry up on its heels. I didn’t want this story to end! This author seriously earned all five stars! I really loved this book!!
A great story with a few bumps. I enjoyed learning about the world and watching the main character learn about her past.
I had no idea what to expect when I picked up Winter’s Wolf, the first of The Cursed Series from Lou Grimes. This is Lou’s debut novel so was not only new to me but this was a new everything experience. Normally I am not drawn to shapeshifter or werewolf novels easily but this one just grabbed my attention with the teasers and blurb mixed with that gorgeous cover, that I had to know what happened in this book asap!
This book was a quick and fast paced read that never left me on a boring note and had me reading faster and faster to see how the book would culminate. I was so happy that this book included so many genres really that it was not completely consumed by the fact that it was a werewolf story. The characters are strong and fierce and Lou writes them with a conviction that makes them come to life and feel very real. I loved how this ended and look forward to seeing what the next few novels will bring about!
Great start to a new shifter series. Very suspenseful and mysterious. Book keeps you very interested front first page to last page. Definitely recommend reading this book. It has a wide range of emotions as you go through the book
Winter’s Wolf (The Cursed Book 1) by Lou Grimes is a YA paranormal story that has a bit of everything. The story is so vivid that it takes you away from everything and draws you into the world of shifters. I love a good paranormal story and this fit the bill nicely with murder and mystery, drama and suspense, action and adventure, the paranormal, shifters/werewolves, self-discovery, family, friendship, romance and more. I enjoyed the characters and found myself laughing at their banter. The story and the characters were well written about romance, friendships and family. There is so much more story to be told and I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book.
This is book 1 in the Cursed series. Louvette and her mother never stayed in one place for very long. Louvette was always getting in trouble in school then it would turn into an expulsion. Her mither never yelled though. Just as they were about to leave to find a new town. A lawyer shows up about her grandfather. He has passed and left everything to Louvette. This book has drama, suspense, paranormal and mystery. Great read.
Louvette has been kicked out of many schools for fighting. She doesn’t start the fights, but she isn’t going to be anyone’s punching bag. After getting kicked out of the most recent school, an attorney arrives saying that she is the beneficiary of her grandfather’s estate since her father is presumed dead. Louvette has never met or even known the name of her father or grandfather, as her mother does not talk about them at all. Once they move into the Blackwood mansion (which is now her new last name thanks to stipulations of the will), Louvette’s life changes in ways she never thought of. She has vivid dreams that she can’t seem to shake. She caught the attention of Arsen on her first day in town, and he is determined to guide her through all these changes. As she learns more about her past, Louvette must decide who she can trust and who she can’t. The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger…as there are many questions that have no answers yet.
I found myself drawn into the story and want to read the next book when it comes out to get more of the story. I enjoyed watching Louvette learn about her past and who she really is. Her friendship with Cara is great to read and her relationship with Arsen is full of potential. Like I said, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book.
4 Stars
Winter’s Wolf is the first book in The Cursed series and debut novel for Lou Grimes. This story sets the series off to a great start- and is definitely a series I will be following closely.
The book is so much more than just a paranormal young adult werewolf story- there is a bit of drama, murder, mystery, suspense, action, adventure, the paranormal, shifters/werewolves, self-discovery, family, friendship, romance, and more.
The world building is richly detailed, and Lou Grimes has a very descriptive and dynamic style to her writing. If this book is anything to go by, the rest of the series is set to be great.
And did I mention….. WEREWOLVES!!! #winning #youhadmeatwerewolf
Can’t wait to see what happens from here.
Thank you, Lou Grimes!
What an awesome book. I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend. Louvette is this teenage girl who continually gets kicked out of schools for getting into fights which causes her and her mother to live around a lot. The 2 ladies are just about to pack up and leave town when a man named Thomas Hollows shows up to tell her that her grandfather recently was murdered and has left everything to her. Her and her mom move up to Montana where she now has a new name, and finally a place to call home. She soon meets up with this boy named Arsen and he explains to her that she is a Lupine (werewolf) and is the only female of her kind. From then on it’s trying to find her way and to make sure she stays safe since she is the only one left of her family.
Can’t wait for the rest of the story to unfold.
I enjoyed this book alot. It was my first book by this author and i would like to read more. This was an engaging story that had mystery, suspense, action and everything in between. It was a well written story and the author’s attention to detail kept me interested until the very end. Louvette is our main character and she has been having strange things happen to her her whole life and that has kept her family on the move. When a lawyer comes to her door sh realizes things are fixing to change but you’ll have to wait and go read this to find out if they’re for the better or if she should have never answered that door.
Happy Reading!
There was a little thriller, action, a lot of paranormal and romance. Werewolf’s always loved reading books with them in it. This is one of those books that got you sucked in right away. Troubled teen with a chip on her shoulder and how she must learn about family, love and control.
