The color transformed to an insane shade of gold. The feeling of being prey took over her for one terrifying minute. But, something crept forward from the dark recesses of her mind. Whatever the darkness was, it was ugly, and it didn’t like to … it didn’t like to be challenged.”

Excerpt
The impact of the sucker punch sent Louvette to the ground hard. Pain flared across her cheek as it split. The effects of her adrenaline paused as her mother’s words of warning replayed in her mind: Make this school last until graduation. She knew this would break her mother’s heart.
A shout that did not come from her mother took her back to present reality. She hadn’t started this fight, but she knew she wasn’t going to let her butt get stomped, either.
She jumped up. Her fist balled as a blonde pixie of a girl came at her. Louvette dodged her this time and swung her fist straight into the girl’s nose. A solid crunch sounded as her attack landed. Her momentary satisfaction was thrown off along with her balance as the girl fell to the ground.
A large arm separated them as the coach finally arrived to do his job. They continued to kick at each other, looking like barrel monkeys hanging off a barrel.
“Break it up! Lynskey and Mallory report to the principal’s office immediately,” snapped Coach No Clue. No clue was his name because Louvette hadn’t been in his class long enough to learn it.
Dragged down the hallway toward the principal’s office, Louvette was faced with the Queen B, otherwise known as Tiffany Mallory. She began to immediately beg, spawning an eye roll from Louvette. She was a whiny beggar. Just one of many B words that could describe her to a T, but it was the nicest one that Louvette could think of. Her pleading stopped as they arrived at the door of the principal’s office. They locked eyes for a second, hatred flaring toward each other.
“I’m first. I’m on my third offense and I’m not waiting all day for you to get a slap on the wrist,” Louvette said to Tiffany as she darted past her into the office. The only thing that stopped her from slamming the door in B’s face was the creature waiting on the other side of the door.

5 out of 5 stars
I loved reading the book Winter’s Wolf (The Cursed Series Book 1) by Lou Grimes. It is a story that pulled me in, and I found myself not wanting to put it down until the final page. It is a YA/shifter story that includes mystery, danger, and discovery. I love the character of Louvette Blackwood She is a young girl who finds out her grandfather was murdered while searching for her father. She also finds that she has the chance at a fresh start in Montana thanks to her grandfather’s will. What does the future hold for Louvette? Read this book to find out. I grew to care about what happened to Louvette with each chapter that I read. I wanted her to find her place in the world. I also enjoyed reading about the additional characters that interact with Louvette. Many of them are helpful and friendly to her. Then some have their own selfish agenda. This is a story that will hook you in from the very beginning. The book had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. I highly recommend reading it.
Lou Grimes started the book that was powerful, intriguing and kept me engaged page after page. The book was very uniquely written for those who enjoy the type of paranormal fantasy of Lupine and shifters. I immensely enjoyed this book as the world building, the characters, the social elite down to the very most creative details. You will fall in love with this book and won’t put it down once you started delving into the book.
Praise Lou Grimes, for a masterfully debut written book!
Winter’s Wolf (The Cursed Book 1)
Lou Grimes
Louvette and her mom have moved around a lot in Louvette’s short lifetime. Many times because Louvette got in fights at school. They are about to move again when a lawyer shows up, and Louvette is the sole heir of her grandfather’s estate. Will this be a good or bad move for them? Will Louvette finally learn more about her dad and grandfather or will her mom still not say anything? Will Louvette find there is more to her grandfather’s death than originally thought? Will she find there is more to her and a reason she was always getting into fights? I loved the journey of her finding out more about her heritage and the Lupine factor. It was also great watching her and Arsen and how their relationship changed and grew. I felt like I was learning about this interesting life right along with Louvette. This one was one where once you got going, you did not want to put down, and now I am so ready for the next one in the series. I loved these characters and can’t wait to see what else happens with all of them.
I’ve been reading a lot of paranormal books lately and it’s made me realize that I’m not really sure why I stopped reading them for so long. There’s just something about a great paranormal book, especially if there are werewolves involved. I particularly loved how Winter’s Wolf had a lot of romance but still managed to also fit in a bunch of action and even a hint of some thriller thrown in.
I think the thing I liked best about this book was that it reminded me a lot of old ya. And while I love all of the recent new ya releases, sometimes I miss that easy reading feel that I always felt from ya books years back. I mean, there was still all of the drama and angst as anything revolving around teenagers entails but the stories were just that, stories. And Winter’s Wolf took me back to that and I was able to just sit down and enjoy the story. And honestly, given everything going on in the world right now, that’s kind of what I want in my books. A great story that I can fall into and want to binge because it takes my mind off of everything.
I really enjoyed the characters and the romance. It was very typical of what you expect from ya books and I love that! One thing I didn’t expect from this story, given that it is a paranormal book, was the world building. And I’m definitely not complaining, I mean it’s my favorite thing in books honestly. And it’s also something that I’ve found seriously lacking in the past few books I’ve read. So it was such a nice surprise to find it done so well in this book!
What I Loved:
I loved the paranormal aspects of this story! The shape-shifting was fun, and I liked that we get to learn about the world with the Louvette because it’s all new to her as well!
How I Felt:
This is a debut story for author Lou Grimes, and I think it is going to be one that people easily fall in love with! And don’t worry, it’s a series, so you can expect more greatness to come!
The plot was so intriguing! Louvette and her mother inherit land in Montana and move from their old home into this new place, grateful for the opportunity to escape their old lives. Louvette meets Arsen who tells her that she is a Lupine, which is a werewolf, and happens to be the only female left!
The characters were so wonderful! Louvette is the main character in the story, and she was easy to connect with. Her experiences as she learns more and more about who she is were described so well, I felt like I was right there with her! I really liked Cara as well. She had this great playful and funny attitude that made me just want to be friends with her!
The mixture of genres that this story goes through is amazing! It’s obviously paranormal with the werewolves, but there are a lot of other things happening. There’s a lovely romance that felt just right. There’s also some murder/mystery stuff that happens that gives you a great sense of suspense and some awesome action moments!
Overall, I was really impressed with this story, and absolutely loved it!
To Read or Not To Read:
I would recommend Winter’s Wolf to readers that enjoy stories with a strong mix of fantasy beings and romance!
I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
This isn’t my normal read but I took a chance on this book. I struggled a little at first with this one and that was completely on me. Once Louvette and her horrible overbearing mother got to Whitefish, the story got better and much more action packed. There’s so many secrets that I know have yet to be answered and I can’t wait to see how this all plays out. Louvette and Arsen have a very sweet and loving relationship. Sure it started out rocky but there was a reason behind that. I loved how well the pack welcomed her in and how they took care of her when she was injured. There’s alot of love in this book!
I really liked this book! It was a quick fun read and I read it in one sitting. I love Louvette although she is quick to just be okay with everything going on. I’m looking forward to book 2!
You got paranormal romance and action all in one in this book. Louvette has a chip on her shoulder. She stays in trouble. After being removed from her most recent school, she learns that she inherits her grandfather’s estate. As she settles into the Mansion, her past comes to fruition and she finds out who she can truly trust. Mystery and growth on top of all the other things. I was truly surprised. Eager to see what happens next!!

Winter’s Wolf is the first in the series The Cursed by Lou Grimes. It follows the story of Louvette, a girl who has trouble not getting into fights at school. Forced to move continuously because of being kicked out of school, Louvette tries to do the right thing but it always seems to end up bad.
When Louvette gets a letter from a lawyer saying she has inherited her grandfather’s estate, a grandfather she didn’t know about, her world is about to be changed. She begins to learn about her family roots and why her temper may be out of control. It wasn’t what she expected. She is now Louvette Blackwood and owns the right to the name.

Winter’s Wolf was a really enjoyable paranormal story – although I have read a few stories from this genre it is not one of my go to books but I saw the cover which I loved and the blurb really intrigued me so I thought I would give it a ago and I really enjoyed it!
