Ember “Emmy” Kenston was raised in the spotlight when all she wanted was to be invisible. A self-proclaimed book nerd, she must live up to the expectations of being the daughter of one of Hollywood’s biggest actresses. Retreating to Archibald Reynolds College gives her a fresh start where she attends classes and happily spends her evenings in the library trying not to be noticed, but Chad notices … notices anyway.
Chad is a squirrel shifter and the only non-canine in the D.O.G. House. He’s totally gorgeous, in the warmer seasons at least, and has made quite the name for himself around campus. Most of the school year he has girls throwing themselves at him, but he’s seen how his brothers are with their true mates, and wants nothing less than to be loved for who he is, not for his summer body. As long as she’s a squirrel of course.
Longing for a mate in no way prepares him for the moment when he first hears her inside his head. The problem is, Ember doesn’t know what’s happening. And worse, Chad’s biggest fear is realised…her animal spirit is not a squirrel.
Can Chad push past his prejudices and accept her as his mate? Or will he turn away from his one true mate forever? That is, if he can even catch her when she freaks out and runs as fast as she can in the opposite direction.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the connection between Ember and Chad and thought they were perfect together. I don’t blame Ember for freaking out when hearing a random voice in her head completely out of the blue because she had no idea what was happening since her adoptive parents are human, she needed time on a few occasions throughout their courtship when she was completely overwhelmed to just step back and collect her thoughts and it was awesome that even when it was upsetting Chad he still just wanted to know if she was alright. I thought it was cool how open Ember was when talking to her parents about Chad and that he’s her true mate. I loved how supportive Chad’s D.O.G brothers are of him. I’m glad Chad got his story told as I’ve been interested in him from book 1 and him being a lone squirrel in a fraternity of 98% canine. Matt was the lone jag in their house before he lost his life fighting for Chase and Jenna’s mixed species true mate bond. Man. Emmy had to put up with so much sh*t from her obnoxious b*tch of a room mate Magenta and all I can say is karma’s a b*tch. I’m looking forward to reading Brett’s story next. I’d recommend this book, series, Westin World Universe and author to everyone.
Omg! “Winter’s Promise” is the 2nd fabulous addition to the new PNR series the ‘ARC Shifters’ 🙂 Loosely connected to the amazing Westin Pack & Collier Pack books, but doesn’t have to be read in order, tho I’m glad I’ve been able to! Always a fresh, unique plot with well-defined characters that spring to life, some new & some recurring with entertaining witty dialogue! … A sweet shifter romance with some heat and suspense, plus surprises that had me hooked from the start & glued to my seat! So I know readers will be engaged & turning pages, too! I highly recommend this must read & all of Ms. Trettel’s works to adult fans of fiction 😀
