The Earl from Christmas Past by Wendy Vella
Love this regency short story. It is hilarious and adventurous. Maddie has such a huge and loving heart but she is indeed upfront & feisty, love that. She challenges him and quickly has him entangled. They are perfect for one another, I thoroughly enjoyed their story and I am glad they got a chance to rekindle their friendship because they are perfect for one another. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.
What a great collection this was! Christmas came and went, and I had to keep reading, because with every new story, there was so much enjoyment! Awesome work, ladies! Some of you I’ve been enjoying your books for awhile, and the others I’m looking forward to reading more. Thank you.
I haven’t had time to read the entire book but the ones I have read are wonderful. They are perfect if you are looking for some books to read in one setting. The collection offers a variety in authors and even a few new authors for me. I like discovering new authors in this way and rediscovering some known authors.
If you’re like me and love Regency romances set during the holidays, you’re going to love this anthology. Thirteen brand-new romances by some of today’s bestselling and award-winning Regency authors. I haven’t read them all yet but I can’t wait to read them. I had the chance to read The Duke She Despised by Alina K. Field this week and my review is for that book.
Filomena Grant blames the now Duke of Kinmarty for her lot in life. His sweeping statements ruined her chances for a good match ten years ago. But Filomena’s cousin and her children are returning from India and Filomena knows the time to make amends with the only family she’s ever known is nigh. She secures a position at the dreaded Duke’s estate as a housekeeper. Hard work has never been a problem for her but when she lays eyes on the Duke’s factor, all she can think about is being swept up in his embrace. What she doesn’t realize is the very same duke she despises is the same man she swoons over. When the truth is revealed, can Filomena forgive the duke, or will he forever be the Duke She Despised?
Hidden identities, family obligations, misunderstandings abound in this story but there’s also love. Romantic love, specifically enemies to lovers romance, is the main trope yet Alina K. Field throws in a few curveballs to make it interesting. My heart went out to both Andrew (dreaded duke) and Filomena several times while reading. Both characters have dealt with huge losses while wasting time stewing over past hurts. Christmastide is a time for healing and this romance oozes forgiveness.
Why is this a five-star book? From the first page, I couldn’t stop reading. I connected with the characters right away. The romance is slow-burning and there’s a fair amount of will they or won’t they intrigue. I was emotionally invested in the story so much; I would try to coax the characters by speaking aloud. The abundant historical details swept me away to another time and place. The ending was unexpected but made my romantic heart soar.
If you love Regency Romance, especially holiday-themed, this anthology is for you. So many great stories by some of my favorite authors. Highly recommend!
My Rating: 5 stars
Want to get in the mood for Christmas and romance? Go no further than this fabulous collection for an amazing group of historical romance authors. Some of my favorite!
A Yuletide Highlander by Collette Cameron
Loved, loved, loved this story! A brawny Scot named Gregor, who has an orange and white tabby he rescured and named Cat (sorry I have to mention the wonderful “friends” she always adds to the stories!) help a lass hide while some rough pieces of shite were trying to nab her. Thus, Gregor meets Sarah Paine and her brother Kipp, who have been on the run for a few years hiding from the villan who had murdered her father. He takes them in and cares for them. Can I just say again I loved this story? Collette also writes exactly what my heart is looking for!!
Invitation to Pleasure by Bronwen Evans
Such a sweet story with a lot of emotion. Georgiana was determined to get her colt back that her father had sold to the Earl of Hascombe. But her plan went awry as she was captured in the Earl’s stables before she could make her escape. His brother in law Daniel, saw her as she was about to get away and stopped her.
When he realized it was a lady, all bets were off and he stole a kiss. This story drew me from the first because I love horses and of course romance and Bronwen Evans wove a wonderful tale of an injured soul trying to save her mother and a man who realizes that maybe he has found the one woman who can share his dreams and life. Truly enjoyed this one so much!
The Earl from Christmas Past by Wendy Vella
A delightful story with one of my very favorite storylines. Friends as children who come back together when they are older. Such is the case with Maddie Spencer and Gabriel Lockhart. Gabe sees Maddie and cannot believe it is the same girl that was so much fun and wild when they were young. She seems to spurn any attention and keep to herself. That is until he finds out what she is really doing and tries to protect her… Of course Maddie is a determined soul, even though she is so attracted to the man Gabe has become. What will happen between these two? Adored this story!!
More to come!
Excellent reading suggestion!
Winter Wishes, A Regency Holiday Romance Anthology is an excellent collection of romantic stories, written by talented authors, such as Bronwen Evans, Lana Williams, Bree Wolf and Collette Cameron are joined by Heather Boyd, Sasha Cottman, Samantha Grace, Donna Cummings, Barbara Monajem, Suzanna Medeiros, Wendy Vella, and Alina K. Field.
The novellas in this anthology tells the sweet stories of men and women who get a second chance or fall in love for the first time.
The stories are charming, well written, filled with sweet romance and a real delight to read!
They will surely put you in a Christmas mood!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from their publisher and NetGalley! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Endearing, Romance! This is a marvelous anthology. Not only is it a steal of a deal, but it will make your heart soar with all the wonderfully crafted stories. All the stories are entertaining, heartwarming, engaging, steamy, emotional and perfectly romantic, and they deliver sublime happy-ever-afters. Filled with wonderfully crafted characters, whose story quickly captured and held my attention, and left me begging for more. A lot of these authors I had never read before and I am seriously pumped to have so many new authors to be able to get to read more of their stories. Don’t let this anthology pass you by!! Loved it!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Winter Wishes is an anthology of 13 Regency Christmas romances by some of today’s most talented writers.
One Room At the Inn by Cheryl Bolen
When Widow Charlotte Hale finds herself and her children evicted from their tiny room a few days before Christmas, she is rescued by a handsome stranger. Philip Fenton promised a dying friend to care for his wife and children, but when he fails in that endeavor he finds another family just as in need. I thought this book was well written, but it lacked that spark of attraction between the hero and heroine. On the whole a four star.
A Rogue’s Reputation by Lana Williams
When Lady Louisa Felton finds her family on the brink of scandal, only a handsome rogue can step in to bring her salvation. But can she trust him? I enjoyed this book. I thought it was very clever and different. I loved the hero Benjamin Wright, the Earl of Granger. There were twists and turns in the plot that I didn’t expect. The fact that the hero is a man of humility was also a breath of fresh air. Benjamin has been a world traveler and it has widened his outlook on his fellow man. “These adventures had helped Benjamin realize he was but one star in the night sky and would only shine brightly for a brief time. The humility he’d experienced at that moment had sealed his desire for a new start.” This was my first time to read Ms Williams work and I look forward to reading more.
Dared & Kissed – The Scotsman’s Yuletide Bride by Bree Wolf
I am normally a fan of Wolf. Forgotten and Remembered is one of my very favorite books. I’m afraid I wasn’t impressed with this story. Too many chapters were spent on the hero and heroine misunderstanding each other and the subsequent fall out. Why would anyone be attracted to a man who holds a grudge for 7 long years? And then there were the other peripheral love stories that just felt like a set up for another book. Not a favorite…
A Yuletide Highlander by Collette Cameron
A Yuletide Highlander is book 7 in the Highlander Heather Romancing a Scot series. I have to say that this is one of my very favorite series by Cameron. I enjoyed this book about Gregor and Sarah. Sarah’s brother Christopher is a very special character – a boy with special needs. Sarah is a wonderfully caring sister to him and Gregor is truly a hero in the boy’s life. There are some tense moments of intrigue and danger as well as a few tingly romantic scenes. You can’t go wrong with Cameron. I haven’t been disappointed yet.
One Enchanted Christmas by Heather Boyd
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think I fell in love with Otis, Lord Clement. He is so kind and caring – a wonderful hero. When Lord Clement agrees to wager with his cruel father – to marry within three months time, he is surprised to find two women he can choose between to be his bride. But who will steal his heart? Ms. Boyd has written a clever romance with a few twists that I wasn’t expecting. “There was a strange tension between them now – and then Otis suddenly darted towards her and pressed his lips to hers. His kiss was sweet, soft, and oh so gentle. His fingertips lingered on her cheek, warm but gentle as he cupped her skull. A lingering pleasure that curled her toes in her slippers and made her senses soar to incredible heights.” Bravo Ms. Boyd!
Mistletoe and Kisses by Sasha Cottman
I have read several of Ms.Cottman’s books and I have enjoyed them. My very favorite book is An Unsuitable Match. In fact I own 10 of Ms. Cottman’s books and I have enjoyed them all. I am sorry to say that this one has fallen short. I found the pace horribly slow and plodding. Hugh Radley is supposed to be a sort of Absent Minded professor. Mary Gray is the daughter of Hugh’s recently deceased teacher at Cambridge University. Hugh and Mary have been friends and she holds a special tendre for Hugh. Normally there is something that must be overcome that keeps two people a part in a romance. But I’m not sure what happened in this story. They go for quite a few walks…. I found there to be zero heat between the two. When there is a sex scene, it just feels forced. A disappointing read. I would give this one 3 stars.
Must Love Majors by Samantha Grace
I enjoyed Must Love Majors. Lady Ambrosia Everly has until the end of the year to find a husband, so her family has arranged a Christmas time houseparty and invited eligible bachelors. But when a man shows up on their doorstep demanding that she give him her beloved springer spaniel Mr. Perkins, her holiday is thrown off kilter. Major Phillip Rowland is a war hero returning from the Napoleonic Wars and discovers that his beloved dog is missing. When he discovers that Lady Everly has stolen his dog, he is on a mission to recover his pet. What happens when enemies begin to feel an attraction for each other? I enjoyed this book. The pace slowed a bit in the middle, but overall an enjoyable read.
A Twelfth Night to Remember by Donna Cummings
A Twelfth Night to Remember is a second chance romance. It was okay. Grace Nettleton is a widow with a small boy. She returns to the estate she grew up on working as the cook. Rhys Wilton is a third son of an aristocratic family. He and Grace were best friends growing up. But Rhys hides a secret love for Grace. Can a cook and an aristocrat find love in a world defined by class? I thought this story was alright. Grace’s son Oliver is adorable. But the notion of a cook and a third son falling in love is quite far fetched.
The Duke She Despised by Alina Field
Wow! I really loved this book. This was my first time to read a story by Field and I am so glad to have discovered her. Her characters are well rounded and believable. The story moves at a good pace. There was some humor sprinkled here and there. I loved the theme of redemption. I look forward to more by this author.
A Christmassy Read 4.5*
One Room at the Inn by Cheryl Bolen. Widowed Charlotte Hale is at the end of her tether when she has to sell her wedding ring to feed her children and on the same day is evicted from her lodging. She takes a chance that the handsome young man who takes her up in his carriage is trustworthy, little knowing that he was actually a friend of her husband. A Christmas story with a difference.
Invitation to Pleasure by Bronwen Evans. A daughter trying to protect her mother and a young man visiting his sister who meet whilst she is trying to steal a spirited colt. Shame about the typos.
A Rogue‘s Reputation by Lana Williams. Dressed as a boy Louisa Felton breaks into the new Earl’s study to retrieve foolish letters written by her mother. Unfortunately she is caught before she can find them but perhaps the Earl is not such a rogue as his reputation would suggest!
Dared and Kissed – The Scotsman’s Yuletide Bride by Bree Wolf. A dare gives Emma enough courage to steal a kiss from Finn but ever since that day he has has gone out of his way to glare and glower at her. Can they finally find their HEA seven years later?
A Yuletide Highlander by Collette Cameron. One of the longer novellas this is a delightful tale with baddies, hardships, deceit, generosity, love and a HEA.
One Enchanted Christmas by Heather Boyd. Six months into her mourning period for her second parent, Meg’s brother whisks her away to Derbyshire and his friend’s house. Meg hasn’t seen Otis Clement for over a decade but the impression she has formed from her brother’s conversations leads her to believe he is a rogue. However when she meets him again, he is not what she expected. An enjoyable short story, with only one wrong note with regard to Hector’s estate which you would expect to be entailed.
Mistletoe and Kisses by Sasha Cottman. Christmas in Scotland and a long overdue realisation of his true feelings leads to happiness for Hugh and Mary.
Must Love Majors by Samantha Grace. A dog loving couple eventually find happiness together. A lovely story.
A Twelfth Night to Remember by Donna Cummings. Despite their differing stations in life Rhys and Grace were friends as children but knew the gulf between them was too wide for them to be more than friends and so Grace married and moved away. Returning as a widow with a young son, their situation is unchanged but this time can they find the courage to deal with the difficulties a relationship would bring? Delightful story and Grace’s young son is adorable.
A Kiss Upon the Wind by Barbara Monajem. A poetry writing ghost, lecherous men, a stolen pendant and a handsome young man make for an intriguing story.
Miss Hathaway’s Wish by Suzanna Medeiros. After three unsuccessful seasons Emily is delighted when her brother agrees to host a house party, perhaps she can meet men who do not normally attend the London Season. Someone she does not expect to meet is an old friend of her brother, who she hasn’t seen in ten years – will he be the man she has been waiting to fall for?
The Earl from Christmas Past by Wendy Vella. An awkward meeting, years after they last saw each other, leads both Gabe and Maddie to make snap judgments about each other. However a chance encounter where Gabe finds Maddie rifling a lord’s study leads him to dig deeper into her London activities.
The Duke She Despised by Alina K Field. In order to prepare a dilapidated castle for the arrival of her cousin’s children, Filomena signs on as the Duke’s housekeeper even though she has every reason to hate the man. She mistakes the Duke for his new factor and intrigued by her Andrew plays along. Fab story.
Note: all stories have sex before marriage, so avoid this boxset if you don’t like that type of thing.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
There are thirteen short stories in this Christmas anthology, and I have so far read three and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed them, I do love a good regency tale and one set at Christmas time, when England and Scotland are being hit with the coldest time, and with fabulous heroes to warm the heroines up, this is a page turner.
One Room at the Inn
Cheryl Bolen
Widowed Charlotte Hale will do anything to protect her two children, and she must travel a distance to reach someone that will help, when she is approached by a very dashing hero Philip Fenton who rescues them and wins her heart in the process. A beautiful story that was filled with warmth and love.
One Enchanted Christmas
Heather Boyd
Lady Margaret is in morning for her parents when her brother whisks her away to a family friend’s estate, feeling like a burden to her brother and not at all happy when she finds out the truth of his trip, but when she meets Lord Clement Otis her heart moves in leaps, it is years since they have seen each other. Otis is in a wager with his cruel father and when the beautiful Meg arrives he falls for her at first sights his wishes are met. A beautiful Christmas story one that is sure to warm your heart.
Mistletoe and Kisses
Sasha Cottman
A magical story set in a Scottish Castle it is Christmas time, mistletoe and magic and a hero and heroine that have really been in love for some time now, but just need that push from some very loving family, will have you filled with happiness and sighing as Hugh and Mary get their HEA. Loved this story, Hugh has always been a favourite of mine.
I can highly recommend this book and I am really looking forward to reading the others in the anthology.
What a great anthology! As soon as I saw Cheryl Bolen, Collette Cameron, and all the other great authors on the cover, I knew this one was for me! Great way to start the holiday season.
Everybody knows that wishes come true at Christmastide.
A Yuletide Highlander by Collette Cameron is Gregor McTavish’s story. Gregor is working in his office at Stapleton Shipping while he decides what he really wants to do with his life. Sarah Paine and her brother Kip are running from the man who killed their father and stole his ship. Gregor decides to help the pair. In order to do so, he must help them elude the man chasing them, try to see the criminal caught, locate a missing mother and the family’s valuables. He enlists the aid of friends and family nearby. Of course at the same time they are caught up in this excitement, Gregor and Sarah begin to take notice of one another. Can they possibly find time to fall in love in the middle of the chaos? Miracles have been known to happen during Yuletide. Gregor is in for a lot of surprises.
In One Room at the Inn by Cheryl Bolen, Lord Phillip Fenton promised a dying soldier to care for his family upon his return to England. When it seems it is too late to help this family, Fenton intends to continue home. He comes upon a family that clearly needs his help. Charlotte Hale reluctantly agrees to allow him to help her and her children. Their delay due to a snowstorm turns out to be quite pleasant and full of surprises, maybe even a Christmas miracle or two.
Mistletoe and Kisses by Sasha Cottman is another wonderful story in the Duke of Strathmore series. Hugh Radley, the Duke of Strathmore’s brother, grows up to be the Bishop of London. This story takes place long before this happens. Hugh is just finishing his studies at Cambridge. He is quite clever, but has a tendency to get lost in thoughts. Mary Gray is the daughter of one of Hugh’s professors, and a friend. She has been alone since her father died and must now leave her home. Hugh brings her to Strathmore Castle to spend Christmas with his family. Hugh knows he has feelings for Mary, but is not very good in the romance department. He is afraid he will lose her before he ever wins her. Hugh needs a miracle, or maybe some mistletoe, or some meddling holiday matchmakers.
Winter Wishes is a lovely heartwarming collection of holiday stories.
Enjoyed this collection of short Christmas season stories. From some of my favorite authors, plus a couple of authors that were new to me. I received an ARC of this book.
I really liked this group of books, even though I haven’t really been in the mood to read, I was still able to read this.
My favorite 2 were One Room at the Inn by Cheryl Boleyn (the whole reason why I wanted to read this collection) and A YULETIDE HIGHLANDER Highland Heather Romancing a Scot #7 by COLLETTE CAMERON.
Winter Wishes is an anthology filled with charming Regency Christmas stories featuring a host of authors that will entertain you for hours. All the stories were good, and there is something for every reader. My favorites in this volume are One Room at the Inn by Cheryl Bolen, Dared & Kissed-The Scotsman Yuletide Bride by Bree Wolf, and A Yuletide Highlander by Colette Cameron. Settle down in your favorite chair and enjoy!
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Anthologies are the best way to read authors unknown to you. When mixed with stories from favorites, they become a real bargain for the reader. Winter Wishes is one such anthology. It is a collection of tales with a Christmas setting in common. Also tieing some of the stories together is an underlying tendency toward thievery, among them, a coat, a horse, a letter, a deed, and even identity theft. There are so many novellas in this book that it took me much longer to read than a regular novel. Not complaining, however. I thoroughly enjoyed offerings by some favorites like Cheryl Bolen, Bronwyn Evans, Bree Wolfe and more. Scattered among my favorites were offerings from new to me authors, whose stories I also enjoyed. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the very last novella by a new to me author, Alina K. Field. Her The Duke She Despised was my favorite in the collection. Although I have seen her books, I had never read one. In the future, I will correct that omission. As I stated previously, anthologies are a great way to discover new authors. I certainly found one! I received this eBook from NetGalley for an honest review.
I read the reviews which appear to be mostly 4 star ratings but this purchase would be worth it for Bree Wolf’s clean romance submission.
5 stars
I received a free copy of the short novella Dared & Kissed The Scotsman’s Yuletide Bride (# 12.5 Love’s Second Chance Series) by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Complex, easy flowing, complete, and satisfying with suggestions at sequels. Emma and Finnegan are nudged by well meaning friends who try and bring them together and thus end the seven year misundering that continues to separate them. Wonderful characters, glimpses at four vastly different romances, and of course a happy ending make this complex holiday clean romance one well worth reading.
Winter Wishes A Regency Christmas Anthology
I enjoyed reading a few of the Novellas on this Set of Novellas.
These Novellas were Absolutely Horrible.
“The Duke She Dispised”
By Alina K Field”The Earl From Christmas Past”
By Wendy Vella”
A Rogue’s Reputation” by Lana Williams
This Novella was very disappointing.
“A Kiss Upon The Wind”
By Barbara Monajem
The rest of the Novellas were Wonderful.
ONE ROOM AT THE INN” by Cheryl Bolen
The Story of Charlotte Hale & Lord Philip Fenton is Absolutely Wonderful.
I really enjoyed reading this Novella.
“INVITATION TO PLEASURE” by Bronwen Evans
I really enjoyed reading this Book.
Georgiana Marsh & Daniel Kerrich’s Story was Absolutely Wonderful.
“A Rogue’s Reputation” by
Lana Williams
Benjamin Wright & Louisa Felton’s Story was not that Good. The Characters kept repeating themselves at every turn. The Story had a Good plot but was delivered poorly.
“Dared & Kissed – The Scotsman’s Yuletide Bride ~ Bree Wolf”
Emma Stewart & Finnegan MacDrummond’s Story was Absolutely Wonderful.
“A Yuletide Highlander ~ Collette Cameron”
Sarah Paine & Gregor McTavish’s Story was Absolutely Wonderful.
A very Sweet & Clean Romance Novella.
“One Enchanted Christmas ~ Heather Boyd”
Margaret Stockwick & Otis Vyne’s Story is Adorable. I wasn’t impressed with the Sex scene, it was rushed & not Romantic.
“Mistletoe and Kisses ~ Sasha Cottman”
Hugh Radley & Mary Gray’s Story was Absolutely Wonderful & Beautiful.
I really enjoyed reading this Book.
“Must Love Majors ~ Samantha Grace”
Ambrosia Everly &
Major Phillip Rowland’s Story was Absolutely Wonderful & Romantic.
“A Twelfth Night to Remember ~ Donna”
Grace Nettleton & Rhys Wilton’s Story was Absolutely Beautiful. I really enjoyed reading this Novella.
“A Kiss Upon The Wind”
By Barbara Monajem
Isolde Doncaster & Gawain Burke’s Journey to HEA was OK, it could have been better.
The Cavalier, Thomas Blakely, was The Earl of Statham, he gravely wounded during the Civil War (1642–1646) (1648–1649) & (1649–1651) and died soon after, and since then had haunted Statham Court. He was hilarious in this Story. I liked it when Isolde & The Cavalier were disagreeing & Gawain sat listening to Isolde because he was unable to hear The Cavalier, albeit he could see him. Gawain would ask a question when he was confused at 1/2 the conversation.
“Miss Hathaway’s Wish”
By Suzanna Medeiros
Emily Hathaway & Jonah Stanton’s Journey to HEA was Absolutely Adorable. Childhood Friends became Betrothed.
“The Earl From Christmas Past’
By Wendy Vella
Madeline Spencer & Gabriel “Lord Lockhart” was not Good. I had a hard time reading this Novella.
I gave up after Chapter two. To many words from this era being used in a setting that is supposed to be possibly 1800s.
Example .
“You’re always insulting someone. One hopes you show your fiancé your true colors before you marry, so he can run for the hills! You have the airs and graces of a princess… which I assure you, you definitely are not.”
“I want you to accompany my daughter… this one.” She pointed to Maddie, who was not amused. “You will stay at her side at all times.”
This man has been with the Family for over 5 years & yet they talk as if he just started yesterday.
“The Duke She Dispised”
By Alina K Field
Filomena Grant & Andrew Macdonald’s Story started out Good then became cheesy the Internal dialogue became as if the Author didn’t have anything left for the Novella. I was really disappointed.
This is another lovely collection of marvellous stories for a great price. A great way to try new authors and enjoy old favourites. There were a few new ones to me and I look forward to reading them as I haven’t read all of the stories but the ones I have I enjoyed very much, my favourite being Collette Cameron’s A Yuletide Highlander, it was different to your usual Ton story. There was sex in some of the books and as usual this reviewer skipped it and it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the books. For the price you can’t go wrong even if you don’t like some of them you will get more than your monies worth with the rest. I received this collection as an ARC and freely give my review.
