In Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher brings her readers into the lives of five very different people….Elfrida Phipps, once of London’s stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life — shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name — still she finds herself lonely. … herself lonely.
Oscar Blundell gave up his life as a musician in order to marry Gloria. They have a beautiful daughter, Francesca, and it is only because of their little girl that Oscar views his sacrificed career as worthwhile.
Carrie returns from Australia at the end of an ill-fated affair with a married man to find her mother and aunt sharing a home and squabbling endlessly. With Christmas approaching, Carrie agrees to look after her aunt’s awkward and quiet teenage daughter, Lucy, so that her mother might enjoy a romantic fling in America.
Sam Howard is trying to pull his life back together after his wife has left him for another. He is without home and without roots, all he has is his job. Business takes him to northern Scotland, where he falls in love with the lush, craggy landscape and set his sights on a house.
It is the strange rippling effects of a tragedy that will bring these five characters together in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan.
It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that the lives of five people will come together and be forever changed. Rosamunde Pilcher’s long-awaited return to the page will warm the hearts of readers both old and new. Winter Solstice is a novel of love, loyalty and rebirth.

This needs to be read every Christmas. Maybe one needs to be an “anglophile” but a cosier book has not been written.
Well written, descriptive book. Good imagery.
One of my most favorite books, great author and wonderful story..
I haven’t read Rosamunde Pilcher in a long time, but I now remember why her books have always captivated me. Such well-developed characters (even the dog, Horace, has a personality!) and one can actually see the countryside and the village and feel a part of their daily life in the holiday season. I was sad when I finished this book!
I have loved all of Rosamunde Pilchers books. This was no exception.
The author built her characters to be believable and wove them into each others lives. It was a pleasant read with some sadness but much happiness.
Wonderful character development and charm in a delightful cross generational story. I am a huge Pilcher fan and she never lets me down.
Interesting characters and story line kept me reading. I could picture the setting because it was described so well but not overdone.
I love how the author develops her characters and then seamlessly brings them all together! There’s so much depth to this writing! It was inspirational!
This is one of my all time favorite books. I read it every year between October and December as it is set during that period. it perfectly captures the esense of Christmas.
One of my favorite books. I will reread it someday.
What a lovely story with such believable characters, who meshed so well with each other. It was easy to visualize the beautiful scenery. I couldn’t put the book down, and then wished I hadn’t finished it so quickly.
Reading this book is relaxing. Such character development. And you know there will be a happy ending.
Excellent. Pilcher writes beautifully. Those other adjectives that you listed are weak. The descriptions of Scotland are just wonderful.
This book got me through a few lonely, sad winter holidays. It has some tragedy but the way the characters cope and make a sweet, tender Christmas together cheers me every time, and I’ve read it at least 3 times.
She is a superb writer and this is one of her best. Each major character has running sections in the book and they all fit together beautifully
I love all her books. This one I red long ago.
My favorite all-time book. I re-read it every year at Christmas time.
Loved the story and the interaction between all the characters
Ms Pilcher creates a story line and characters that I can get lost in. Her descriptions create images in my mind that are like old friends. I have enjoyed and got lost in many of her books.
