In Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher brings her readers into the lives of five very different people….Elfrida Phipps, once of London’s stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life — shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name — still she finds herself lonely. … herself lonely.
Oscar Blundell gave up his life as a musician in order to marry Gloria. They have a beautiful daughter, Francesca, and it is only because of their little girl that Oscar views his sacrificed career as worthwhile.
Carrie returns from Australia at the end of an ill-fated affair with a married man to find her mother and aunt sharing a home and squabbling endlessly. With Christmas approaching, Carrie agrees to look after her aunt’s awkward and quiet teenage daughter, Lucy, so that her mother might enjoy a romantic fling in America.
Sam Howard is trying to pull his life back together after his wife has left him for another. He is without home and without roots, all he has is his job. Business takes him to northern Scotland, where he falls in love with the lush, craggy landscape and set his sights on a house.
It is the strange rippling effects of a tragedy that will bring these five characters together in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan.
It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that the lives of five people will come together and be forever changed. Rosamunde Pilcher’s long-awaited return to the page will warm the hearts of readers both old and new. Winter Solstice is a novel of love, loyalty and rebirth.

Such a sweet well written book or ordinary lives and how they all entertwine
A book for those who like stories set in Great Britain. Well written, insightful into character’s profiles. A satisfying read with a nice ending that leaves you wanting the story to go on.
I couldn’t stop reading and when I did just kept thinking when I could read again. Read it and enjoy
I love all of Rosemunde Pilcher’s books. They are perfect for getting cozy under a blanket on a cold day or laying on the beach. They are simple stories with great character development. Winter Solstice is a has an interesting combination of people that all meet up in Scotland at Christmas. Cozy and fun are the words to describe this wonderful relaxing read.
Comforting , honest characters.
With the world in such turmoil with COVID, this is a life affirming delightful book about people you care about.
Excellent book with many twists & turns. Includes family drama.
If long books with in depth character development are your jam- this is the book for you. It is well written. There are lots of mysterious bits that move slowly. This book is comfortable, like a long soak in the tub.
What a refreshing story! I adored all the descriptive details regarding scenes, weather clothing and character history. Was such a pleasure to read a normal story— no crime, violence, vulgar language, just interesting characters who come through some personal tragedies to live, care and love again. Perfect for our depressing times to lose oneself in!
I read this book a couple years ago, a borrowed book. When I saw Winter Solstice in my book offerings, I jumped at the chance to have my own copy. One of favorite books ever. No one writes like Rosamunde Pilcher! Wonderful characters and the last half of the book is set in beautiful Scotland.
Extremely well-plotted and written. Characters are well-drawn and revealing, and the novel is steeped in the charm of its Scottish village setting,
Just a good read. Sharing it with a friend
Characters are interesting
I have read this book more than once. A very good book, I like where it takes me
Totally enjoyed this book. Others have given it a poorer review but It certainly held my interest. I’ve not read many of Pilcher’s books but if this is one of her less loved books I’m certainly going to read more of her work.
I really like her books. They are long but full of wonderful caring people. It makes me wish people today were as caring and considerate as her characters. When I get really down on the world around us, the selfishness, the haughtiness, the exclusion of other p books are a pick-me-up.
I have read this book times. It is my Christmas time book.
I loved this book and could not put it down. I have read a number of books by Rosamunde Pilcher enjoying all of them and the English settings.
