In Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher brings her readers into the lives of five very different people….Elfrida Phipps, once of London’s stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life — shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name — still she finds herself lonely. … herself lonely.
Oscar Blundell gave up his life as a musician in order to marry Gloria. They have a beautiful daughter, Francesca, and it is only because of their little girl that Oscar views his sacrificed career as worthwhile.
Carrie returns from Australia at the end of an ill-fated affair with a married man to find her mother and aunt sharing a home and squabbling endlessly. With Christmas approaching, Carrie agrees to look after her aunt’s awkward and quiet teenage daughter, Lucy, so that her mother might enjoy a romantic fling in America.
Sam Howard is trying to pull his life back together after his wife has left him for another. He is without home and without roots, all he has is his job. Business takes him to northern Scotland, where he falls in love with the lush, craggy landscape and set his sights on a house.
It is the strange rippling effects of a tragedy that will bring these five characters together in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan.
It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that the lives of five people will come together and be forever changed. Rosamunde Pilcher’s long-awaited return to the page will warm the hearts of readers both old and new. Winter Solstice is a novel of love, loyalty and rebirth.

I own this book. I have read it three times over the years. The author has a way of bringing the reader into the story. You feel the emotions of all of the characters. The merging of three generations of people brought together in a small town in a big house is heartwarming.
Rosamunde Pilcher never disappoints. Characters are charming and quirky and you even though you suspect how it will end, you read to the finish.
Always like Pilcher… interesting characters and plotline
Very well written book which held my interest throughout. Loved the characters.
I read this book the first week it came out. And I have read it at least 5 times since then and have bought it for friends and recommended it SO many times! It is truly such a wonderful book and so relatable.
Great writing and story. Complicated family relationships and people just thrown together and how they blossomed.
I enjoy her books
I enjoyed this book of wonderful characters and place. Purely enjoyable and highly recommended.
This is a nice story to read in front of a fire with hot chocolate. It’s a pleasant step away from the chaos of the world.
An enjoyable read.
A good, escape from reality book. I am not a reader of romance novels. This is the second book I have read by Pilcher. The first being the Shell Seekers. Which I enjoyed. I read Solstice In January while watching the snow fall . Now I want to go to Scotland and eat lots of scones and drink lots of tea and wine!
I absolutely loved this book. The depth of the characters, the descriptions of scenery, dwellings and businesses were vivid to the point that I wished I could visit and meet these folks. I wanted to read quickly so that I could find out more and yet I wanted to slow down so that I wouldn’t get to the end. I very much enjoyed the hours I spent with this book!
I loved this story. I love this author. Her characters are so wonderful and her stories
so heart warming. I would love to live in one of her novels.
What a wonderful story. I had read it once before but it really came alive for me again.
I absolutely adored this story and was sorry to come to the end. I w anted more and
more. I have read most of Rosamunde Pilcher’s books and highly recommend any or
all of them. Truly loved it!!!
An enjoyable read for winter evenings.
A favorite of mine. I try to read it every other year as a Winter solstice celebration. The characters are very believable
Pilcher’s characters are always wonderfully developed and include many that I would like to know. She’s done it again for me.
Frankly, a pleasant sweet read in today’s constant turmoil. I looked forward to escaping into this story. Sometimes you just need a little happiness.
This was a reread for me and perfect for this time of isolation.
This book started off slowly and I almost gave up, but I’m so glad I persevered! The characters gradually began to develop and details that initially seemed disconnected or trivial began to fall into place. By the second half of the book, I found it hard to focus on anything but the story.
Warning: this is the coldest book I’ve read! Put in a sweater, start a fire, and pour a glass of wine.
