While feeling drawn to the fae King by a sizzling attraction, her apprehension builds to a panic over why he brought her there.
When Cade discovers that Amber is his mate, can he still carry out his plan to sacrifice her? Or will the malicious plotting of others within the court leave Amber trapped in the mystical realm with nowhere to run?

I am part of a big community of readers that LOVE a good journey to Faerie. This story did not disappoint!
It’s difficult to not like Amber, and even knowing the motivations for King Cadewyn taking her back to his kingdom, it’s hard not to feel for the guy. He’s just trying to save his realm after all. There’s drama, that wonderful feeling of being dropped into a lush mythology and some truly steamy romantic tension.
If you are a fan of fae / human romance, this is a great choice!
I have received a copy of the “Winter King: Steamy Fantasy Romance (The Wyth Courts Book 1)” by JS Dark in exchange for my honest review, and here it is. This is the first book I read from JS Dark and I may say it was nice to read about a fantasy world from where the magical people live. As you read you can’t help to feel the desperation the Winter King has to save his people from a nasty curse that has taken over his land. Amber the main female character of the story only make you fall in love with her throw her kind heart. Finding out that the Winter King’s wolf is Amber’s mate and knowing what needs to be done to save his land and people only wants to keep reading to find out what will happen, will he sacrifice her to save hundreds or will he keep her safe from harm. You can’t help to feel the attraction these two characters have for one another. It’s a good page turner. Thanks for sharing.
Winter King, first in this series, has a gorgeous wrapper. I love the artwork. It’s so beautiful! J.S. Dark, if you read this review kudos to your artist!
Lately, I’ve read a great deal of paranormal romance, reverse harem, and sports romance. I am one of those people who gets focused on a genre and then ruts it until I find something to distract me. I looked at this cover for sometime before I read the book. Then it took a while to write the review for no other reason than the end of the year was crazy. I’m not as late to the party as much as I am late announcing I’m here.
Wyth is in trouble. The faerie realm is in danger. Monsters from the Tywyll Forest are plaguing the people; curses are killing the land.
King Cadewyn of the Winter Court can save his world if he is willing to sacrifice a life. One human life. The life of a pure-hearted, selfless human. Amber’s life. But the kicker is Cade can’t just take her life to save the Kingdom. Amber must be willing to be the sacrifice. He plans to show her the beauty and wonder of the Winter Court, introduce her to the residents, let her see the way of life in the Faerie realm.
The King has stupidly misplayed his hand because Wyth has wooed his tribute; the Kingdom is fascinated with Amber. Favored by the goddesses, her presence is fated. Oh, and to his dismay, she is his one and only mate.
I felt at first that the characters were stiff. So formal that it felt uncomfortable, the portrayal of Cadewyn, hollow. J.S. Dark writes the King that way for growth. He becomes less cold and more real as he falls for Amber. But the actual test of his growing humanity is that the goddesses’ ritual requires a sacrifice. Wyth needs a human willing to die for it, but Cadewyn is the one who has to lose his person for the sake of his people.
While Cadewyn, Amber, Chiara, Tenen, Vasant, Kei, and the royalty of the other Wyth Courts are all interesting, the gold for me is the goddesses. I love Haeri, Haere, Haera. The most successful tool used in this story is J.S. Dark’s archetypal representations. The rule, the mentor, the innocent, the magician, the villain, the ally, the trickster, and the maiden, mother, and crone.
I will be jumping into the next book as soon as I have time. The Spring Warrior’s cover is just as pretty, and the story will be killer—I know it will.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advance copy of this book.
No spoilers of any kind included.
So this is all I’m going to say about Winter King and that is I thought it was fantastic.
This is my first time reading anything by JS Dark and I must say I’ll definitely be reading more from this author!
So I’m definitely going to say yes I do recommend this book because I loved it and I think you will too.
I really liked this book. Fantasy romance is my favorite genre so I enjoyed this story a lot.
If you like fated mates, shape-shifters, magic, sword fights and medium slow burn, this is your book. The story isn’t very long so if you prefer more straight forward plot you will have a great time reading this book.
I liked a lot the descriptions of the Fae world and reading Cade and Amber different point of views while advancing though the story. It’s interesting to see how they feel and think about each other and what they have to face.
Another good points, there’re also good steamy scenes since our main characters are very attracted to each other, no cheating and no cliffhanger but there are interesting secondary characters that hopefully will be seen again in the next book.
*I voluntarily reviewed this book for an honest review*
A curse, a sacrifice and an impossible choice. A wonderful new series full of magic, fae and fated romance. I really enjoyed the characters and loved how the story played out. It was hard to put down once I picked it up.
This was an interesting read. I really had high hopes for this book, as I really loved the blurb. It had high potential. But I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped. It was really hard to keep my interest.
This is the first book in The Wyth Courts series by this author, and although it held a lot of promise I do think it needed developing more, the story needed a bit more oomph, it was a bit predictable and I didn’t feel the connections with the characters. That said I did enjoy the story, there is definitely scope for more books, so will keep an eye out and see how they go.
So the idea behind the story is that the Winter King, Cade, has had a curse cast upon his land and only a selfless and caring human can save his world and must be sacrificed to do so. Amber is very much a do gooder, always helping out others in need and gets taken by Cade back to the Winter Court. He tells her only she can save his land, but keeps to himself that she has to die in order to do it. They have a connection that draws them to each other, he ends up spending time with her and falling for her, and so ends up with a major decision, save the land or save her.
Its a quick short read, the story is there but needs filling out a bit to make it better. Cade’s use of winter related curses did tend to get a little annoying though! Let’s see what book 2 brings.
Great Fae fantasy romance! Amber is down on her luck. She just lost her job and is living with a horrible roommate. What’s special about Amber is she never looses her empathy, kindness or willingness to help. Cade is the Winter king in the Fae realm of Wyth. His land has been poisoned by a curse from longstanding enemies. In order to save his land he needs a pure hearted sacrifice. I loved Amber and Cade. They are perfect for each other! I felt bad for both of them, but they were doing what they had to do to survive. Amber was so sweet and compassionate, I hated to see her struggle. Cade was struggling as well. He so badly wanted to save his land and his people, but was so torn on the sacrifice required.
I thought the flow of the story was great, no filler or stilted dialogue. Easy to get into and the story kept pace. The descriptions were amazing too! It was over before I knew it, I would love to read more about these two. I love the concept of the different courts and can’t wait to see what’s next!
Sooo good and hot and romantic! Everything I look for in a fantasy romance book! I couldn’t put it down! Highly recommend it! 🙂
5 CRANKY STARS
A story about shifters is always a good start for me. This story was well written and held my attention. The author has created a world in another dimension that is constantly bathed in snow. It is inhabited by Were’s and other monsters. In this case, the Were’s are good. There are also Fae and Goddesses. It is also a story of love and war.
Cade is the King of his land, and a darkness is threatening to overtake his kingdom. He asks the Goddess of Wyth what he should do and is told it is a curse with but one cure. Meanwhile, in the human world, Amber’s life is falling apart. She lost her job, has a mean roommate and hates her life. However, she is pure of heart and selfless. Just what Cade needs to save his kingdom.
Cade goes to her world and kidnaps her. Well, sort of, since her life is such a mess anyway, she goes willingly. She is told about the curse and introduced to the Goddess. From there you must read the story to find out what happens. There is more to this story than what I have given you. It truly is a fun read and fairly quick, but that maybe because I couldn’t put it down.
This was an intriguing and imaginative read.
The winter court needs a sacrifice to save it from a spreading curse that is infecting his land.
A selfless and pure human.
One human life weighed against and the entire court of the Fae and for the winter king there is no contest.
Amber a down on her luck and now jobless young girl is that human.
Kidnapped and taken to the winter court Amber suddenly finds herself a part of a whole new world one she never dreamed existed.
Cadewyn is the winter king of Wyth and from the very first moment, he feels himself drawn to his new houseguest.
He’s aware he has to sacrifice her for the greater good but wishes it was otherwise.
His feelings naturally deepen the more time he spends around Amber and naturally he feels such guilt especially as he is also withholding the full truth from her to gain her cooperation.
Cade fights his feelings his need to protect her conflicting with his ultimate goal.
I wasn’t much a fan of his blowing hot and cold even though I was aware of the whys I just felt so sorry for Poor Amber.
She was such a sweet girl who just wanted someone or something to call home. and the constant push and pull was not fair.
This in itself wasn’t an incredibly angsty read and if you like the romantic fated mate type of stories this one would definitely be a fit for you.
It also could have done with some fleshing out as I wasn’t always feeling the emotion between Cade and Amber and some of the scenes and secondary characters were a tad choppy.
Quite a quick read, I managed to read it in one sitting and it’s dual POV which I do prefer.
This really was an easy and enjoyable read with a lot more positives overall than negatives.
Giving this one a thumbs up from my camp.
I would be interested in seeing what comes next from this author.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Winter King (The Wyth Courts, #1).
