Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time and all the way to the end. Thus begins an unexpected journey into the truth of Anya’s life in war-torn Leningrad, more than five decades ago. Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their mother’s life, and what they learn is a secret so terrible and terrifying that it will shake the very foundation of their family and change who they believe they are.

Very entertaining story. Nothing new about issues in families but viewed by Kristin Hannah makes is just so interesting. Plus the historical twist
Loved it.
Everything she writes is great. Characters, storylines and pacing are superb
Very insightful and knowledgeable. Kept my interest the entire book.
One of the best books I have ever read!
Unforgettable
Loved this book. Had a hard time putting it down!
One of the best books I have read in a long time!
I’ve read all of Kristin Hannah’s books and this is my absolute favorite. Unimaginable hardships the characters endured. This one will stay with you long after you’ve finished it.
My favorite!
Kristin hannah never disappoints.
This was a great story. I couldn’t put it down!
This is one of those books that stays with you. At least it has for me. I learned a side of WWII and what the Russian country went through that I never knew before. Because it left an incredible impact, I checked facts and found this author really did her research. She brought so much information to us. It was tragic but so eye-opening to …
This book is a very, very close 2nd place to The Nightingale. The flash back scenes to Stalin’s Soviet Union are well researched and disturbing.
A beautiful story of a mother and two very different daughters. Extremely sad and it was definitely a year jerker.
Good story line that held my interest from beginning to end. Some parts were a bit predictable, so it only gets 4 stars! It was still very enjoyable and I would recommend it!
Fabulous book, a must read!
I only gave this a 4 as I was spoiled by the Nightingale. But, as always, Hannah is an excellent writer, storyteller twisting fact and fiction. A worthwhile read!
I love all of Kristen Hannah’s books, but this is my 2nd favorite.
It was so different and informative.
