From the voice of Nigel to the contributions of Sterling and Monique, to the echoey sounds of retrospection, this is a nonstop heart pounding mystery adventure.
What happens when the wife you thought was dead for years is spotted waiting for a train? And you are forced to kill an international assassin to save her life? How do you explain that to the authorities, who may not actually BE the authorities?!?!?
Bringing together some of the younger and still active members of those unnamed government agencies (and friends, family, etc) plus a group of senior crime solvers, you have to pay close attention to find out who is who and on whose side.
What did Blair see and know that required her to leave her family and make others think her husband Chris was not always a good person. When she is killed for a second time…
Politics and espionage and treachery on all levels, including gossipy neighbors, this is a series that will thrill crime readers who enjoy military tales and technology and complicated plots.
Hitting close to home for readers of any of Lauren Carr’s series, you will be on the edge of your seat many times before this book is finished.
All right. Back with the Geezer Squad and a freezing cold case.
We start out with Blair witnessing multiple deaths as she runs for her life. No one to trust, it’s up to her to find her way to the director of the CIA, with the disc. She has secrets and comes face to face with one of them…Chris.
Chris has retired to a farm, but when he sees Blair, he has a lot to investigate…so, with the help of the Geezer Squad he begins.
From the opening pages the action begins and it doesn’t stop until the end.
The characters are tough, resilient, trained professionals. Nigel, with his trust guardian Tristan, is also on the case and pulls a fast one of me. I love surprises and this was a doozy.
I love the visual imagery throughout. Here is an example and I think it will easily portray my feelings.
The hundred pound dog repeatedly leaps, all four feet off the floor, to peep through the door.
I cannot begin to describe my love for Sterling and was going to share some of my favorite thoughts about him, then, I thought, I don’t want to spoil the surprise for you. Lauren Carr’s fabulous critters offer many moments of smiles and laughs with their distinct personalities, right down to Thor, the bunny rabbit.
I just want to let you know, if you see a German Shepard with sunglasses and an FBI hat, don’t get in his way. He’s probably on a case.
A conspiracy within the government. A high level official crossed over the line, turning traitor. Car chases. Bullets Flying. Danger rises and they are in a race against time.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Winter’s Frost by Lauren Carr.

Lauren Carr has knocked it out of the park this time. I enjoyed every second of this book, not that I don’t enjoy all of her books. This one for some reason was just really great to me. Winter Frost has it all, Spy’s, murder, espionage, undercover agents, faked deaths, a touch of romance, and the Geezer Squad. I love that Lauren does not overwhelm us with graphic language and sex scenes. These things do not need to be added to make great books. I love Lauren’s writing style, her books are fast paced and not filled with descriptions of people, places, and things that bring nothing to the story.
Chris Matheson buried his wife or at least thought he had 3 years before. Until he runs into her face to face one day. While still in shock over Blair being alive a few days later Chris learns she really has been murdered this time, and in their old back yard. Chris and the Geezer Squad set out to answer a lot of questions. Why he was told she was dead to begin with. What she uncovered to fake her death and to end up murdered for real this time. And why is his family is being targeted by hired killers. As the mystery unravels so does the hurt of Blair leaving them in the first place.
In this second installment, Winter Frost continues Lauren Carr’s A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Ice, and this one did not disappoint me. Readers can read this one as a stand alone but I would recommend to read Ice first before starting this one. It gives more of a back story of Chris Matheson, his family and his friends.
Winter Frost involves the main character from Ice, Retired FBI agent, Chris Matheson, and his investigative team, the Geezer Squad. They go undercover as a book club to find out the death of his late wife and mother of his children, Blair, on the other side of the world. What they discover completely through me for a loop. I had no idea they would find what they did! I would have never predicted what would happen next. Which involves, federal government employees from going missing to getting shot in the multiple times, foreign terrorists attacks and faked deaths.
Winter Frost is another fun and entertaining read. It is full of colorful characters, including highly intelligent canine, Sterling. He is just so funny that made me laugh all the way through. The plot has action, adventure, mystery and suspense.
I would give Winter Frost one hundred stars if I could. I highly recommend this book. It is not one to be missed! If the reader is a audiobook fan, the narrator for this one does an awesome job with his performance bringing the pages to life. I hope there will be more in the series in the future.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
This is book two in the newest series by Lauren Carr. Chris Matheson’s wife, Blair, died three years ago during a terrorist attack overseas. If so, then why did Chris just see her and stop a known hitman from killing her…again. When Blair jumps on a train and gets away, Chris is left to explain why he shot and killed a man at the train station. Before that can happen, he is whisked away by men who he assumes are with the FBI. This is just the beginning of an amazing mystery. Chris is a retired detective and undercover cop. He belongs to a Geezer Squad “book club” which is their name for former law enforcement personnel who get together to solve cold cases. The “book club” will try to figure out what happened to Blair and why she faked her death, a death which kept her away from Chris and their three daughters. There is so much action and humor as they continue to piece together clues. I love that this book has a few of the characters from Ms. Carr’s “Thorny Rose” mysteries as well as mention of Mac Faraday from the Mac Faraday mysteries. I have read ALL of Ms. Carr’s books and eagerly await her next book. If you have not read her mysteries, then you should! (by paytonpuppy)
I guess I’m a Lauren Carr super fan as I’ve read all 25 of her books! So I was really excited to crack open Winter Frost – the latest addition to her Chris Matheson series. As always, it was a wonderful read that I dove into eagerly and had trouble putting down.
Like the stories in her Mac Faraday, Twofer Murder, Lovers In Crime and Thorny Rose series, Carr imbues the Chris Matheson novels with strong storylines; murder; mayhem; mystery; great characters; strong, intelligent men: equally strong and intelligent women; a touch of humour; a good dash of danger; and best of all, several fabulous pets that each have their own unique personality.
Winter Frost starts with a totally unique plot twist that made me sit up and say what? – a random meeting on the street between Chris Matheson and his deceased wife who was buried several years ago. He bumps into her on the street, tries to follow as she flees, saves her life from a high end assassin, and then watches powerlessly as she jumps on a subway and disappears again.
What follows is a wild ride as we follow what happens to Chris after seeing his wife including assassins hot on his trail, the Geezer Squad (a real fav of mine) stepping in to help, learning the secret of where his wife has been the last 3 years, a threat to the safety of his mother and three daughters and an attempt to thwart and expose dangerous traitors. Touches of humour are added to lighten the mood here and there including the antics of Sterling – a super smart, card counting (yes he wins at cards), hat and sunglass wearing dog with attitude – and a super intelligent computer entity named Nigel. And I love that there are characters from her other series making appearances in this story.
Want to know how Chris’ wife could be alive after being buried three years ago or who the Geezer Squad is or how they brought down the traitors? I’m not telling!
Let Lauren Carr toss together a single father with three girls, the “Geezer Squad” (retired police types), a fifteen-pound rabbit wearing frilly pink clothes, an eccentric German shepherd with a hat collection, and a few international bad guys, and you get a thrilling and humorous mystery that’s nearly impossible to put down.
Are angels real? Why would Chris Matheson’s widowed mother hide two naked duct-taped men in the garage? And the question that causes pandemonium for the Matheson family and the Geezer Squad alike—Chris’ wife has been dead for three years. Hasn’t she? If she’s still alive, what does that mean for Chris’ new romance?
Throw in a super smart artificial intelligence named Nigel and a friendly tarantula named Monique and only “mystery lady” Lauren Carr could sandwich it together with a twist at the end that trumps bread ties.
