“Winston Churchill’s Renegade Spy” is an action-packed, well written adventure novel. Main character Jonas (an American) is recruited to help root out a German spy within the British government during World War II. During the course of his mission, we experience a lot of interesting parts of history along with Jonas. He travels to various countries (in addition to England), and the author provides good, clear descriptions that made me feel like I was right there, experiencing various parts of Europe as they were during the Second World War.
The plot is very tight and well-written. In addition to the main spy case, Jonas has to deal with various other subplots that may or may not tie in to his main objective. I loved watching him try to unravel everything, and when the ending was revealed, everything fit together and made perfect sense.
The character of Jonas was detailed and well-written. We start out with some basic information about him, and more is revealed as he moves through the story. By the end, I felt like I really knew him, and am eager to see where his next adventure takes him!
A stunning, explosive, electrifying, fast paced

I volunteered to read Winston Churchill’s
Renegade Spy. Thanks to the Review Crew for
the opportunity. My opinion is voluntary and my own.
A Highly Recommended Read!!
I generally really like movies and books about spies. I found this quite slow at the beginning and hard to continue. It did speed up and there ended up being a fair amount of action. It’s definitely well-written, so maybe it’s just me. It just didn’t grab me.
Winston Churchill’s Renegade Spy by Steve Haberman is a WW II spy novel featuring an American cop in Switzerland who is approached by TWO representatives of Churchill’s government to suss out the identity of a spy at the highest levels of the British government. So begins an odd journey for Jonas Shaw from Switzerland through a maze of hideaways to escape Europe and end up back in England with the answer in hand.
What could have been a terrific novel fell short of the mark. For one thing, the Nazis were not portrayed realistically. They were portrayed as buffoons who him from custody despite finding a passport which didn’t match the identity of the person he said he was. Really? A series of trite contacts with people on his route to escape. Poor pacing. The first half almost bored me to sleep, the second half was so quick it almost made no sense. Word misusage and other grammar errors. This is not an ARC. It has been published for months so a new editor is in order, or maybe an editor at all. Different points of view, which did come together in the end, but not well. Sad, really. It had such potential.
I was invited by the Review Crew to read a free copy of Winston Churchill’s Renegade Spy by the Review Crew. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“Winston Churchill’s Renegade Spy” is a thrilling adventure set during World War II, centered around Jonas Shaw–a former bodyguard to British prime minister Winston Churchill. The story begins with Jonas on vacation after being let go as bodyguard, when he is later found by someone that works for Churchill, asking for a specific job: find any suspicious information that may lead to the identity of the suspected spy infiltrating the British government. If they find the suspected spy, then they can stop Herr Hitler from overtaking Great Britain like they did with France.
Jonas Shaw is determined and loyal to his duty. It is expressed in the beginning that he trusted his instincts when holding a job as a cop in a town in America, despite others discouraging him–he acted on what he believed was the right thing to do and saved some American senators from the Mafia. Jonas remains loyal to what he believes to be the truth and the best for all, afterall he is motivated to accept the job after he reflects on who would be affected were the British government to be infiltrated by Nazi Germany. This novel has a bit of everything–action, mystery and intrigue, deceit, adventure and a lot of history. World War II is always an interesting topic to read about, despite its atrocities, and reading this fictional story is no different. The historical political element added on to this thriller spy story makes it all the more interesting! It makes you wonder what happens behind closed doors.
I cannot recommend this book enough! I would come home from work and try to read as much as I could whenever I got the chance! Besides Jonas we meet a number of interesting characters, like Nigel Adams, Cyril Cavendish, Millie Kent and many more. Cavendish, the man who initially reaches out to Jonas to help in identifying the spy, was quite the interesting character to see grow throughout the progression of the novel! Cavendish was able to showcase different sides to his personality that added more intrigue to the plot–he definitely had certain pieces of information that drove the plot along. The dynamic between Cavendish and Jonas was also intriguing as we were able to see it shift as more was revealed to the reader. This story was full of action through the very end, making for an interesting read. The writing style definitely helped the plot along, it was so easy to follow along that I found myself just turning page after page.
A mind-blowing mystery!
Winston Churchill’s Renegade Spy by Steve Haberman is a book for war-based mystery story lovers and one of those rare kinds in this genre. The book features the leading character Jonas Shaw who was an ex-crew member of the Winston Churchill, as he was called for duty again and this time for a somewhat thrilling and significant task. With the political backing that he gets, Jonas enters into his mission with a clever approach, and the story unfolds as he progresses along with his investigations. The story unveils an era dating back to WWII and the political social backgrounds of Britain, Germany, and other neighboring countries, and how these political paradigms got influenced by the activities of Adolf Hitler. Being a reader of modern fictions and mysteries, it was intruding for me to read and understand a spy’s perspective during the mid-20th century, where limited technology was available.
The book was unexpectedly a fast read, and the credit for that should go to the author, for constructing the plot very clearly and concisely. The characters were well developed, and the author had cleverly used the elements of mystery action-adventure and politics to keep the plot engaging from beginning to end. It is a book that grabs anyone to finish it in one go, and for me, it was a mind-blowing work of art. Much enjoyed and recommended!
