What is there not to like about this story? Action-packed, wonderful world-building, characters you care about, and Gryphons! Eva’s character is unpredictable, endearing, and someone you really want to root for! Way to go Mr. Siddoway!
Really enjoyed this fun fantasy adventure! It’s a unique alternative to the “dragon-rider” trope with a reluctant young female lead who is far more than she seems (or realizes herself). It kept me up past my bedtime! Well done, Mr. Siddoway!
Great start to the series, Windsworn follows the adventures of a smith-apprentice turned griffin rider. It’s a great twist on the ‘dragonrider’ type of books, and is full of action, adventure, mystery, and an overarching link between all 3 books in the series.
Windsworn, the first installment in Derek Alan Siddoway’s Gryphon Riders Series, is a great start to this epic adventure. The storyline is fast-paced, filled with intrigue, subterfuge, politics, danger and adventure. The characters are well developed and engaging. Eva is endearing in her role as the protagonist in this coming of age story. She finds herself conflicted when she is torn from her familiar life as a blacksmith’s assistant and tossed into the word of the Windsworn. Does she have what it takes to survive and to thrive in this brave new world? How can she when even her gryphon chick hates her? If they are supposed to be bonded, shouldn’t they tolerate each other at least? Read on to get the answers to these questions and many more in this excellent adventure!
A feeling that I had read the book before, a hint of a memory past, but just enough of a difference to keep reading.
This book had me at the gryphons, my favourite mythical animal ever! Lots of action and a fun read.
Great combination of Perm, Valdemar and Hogwarts. It wasn’t very challenging or original, but it was a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to reading the next book(s) in the series.
Seemed like a combination of Harry Potter and McCaffrey’s Pern books>It was an easy read and suitable for YA audiences.
Overall rating: 4.8
The introduction to some great characters took place swiftly and I found myself taking notes on each one. I truly enjoy books where supporting characters are equally important. Other than the struggles that Eva was put through, her mysterious family history also kept me flipping pages. As a side note, I can’t be the only one that wants my own Seppo! Very glad this is YA for I am constantly looking for books for my granddaughter! On to book 2! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
A thrilling coming of age tale. Well laid out character development and a nice climax. Didn’t see the end twist coming, but looking back it was foreshadowed well. Good intro into the world.
The puzzle part reminded me of a Stargate episode where Daniel had to do the same thing so that was funny.
Minor grammatical / editorial errors scattered throughout but nothing too crazy.
This is a gripping story about a reluctant heroine who is thrust into a life-changing adventure and faced with tough decisions. The characters are interesting and you never know exactly who is behind the attacks at the gryphon mountain barracks. There are certainly some unexpected moments. Most of the time it’s fast paced and only slows down when three of our heroes are faced with challenges inside the catacombs. That was the only part that made it feel like it was for younger readers. I also came across a number of little typos, but they’re easily overlooked. I enjoyed Windsworn so much that I read it in two days!
Eva thought her life would be rural, living with her adoptive father Soot and a golem called Seppo; a boy called Ivan and a stolen Gryphon egg changed that. Eva becomes a windsworn trainee- balancing fear and determination to show she could be here. There are secrets surrounding life in the Gyr and Eva’s own past that collide and become dangerous to all involved. An excellent fantasy you can lose yourself in.
This one was very good! Definitely recommend.
