Still waters run deep . . . From the moment Roan Taggart picked up the pretty redhead at the Jackson Hole airport, his training and experience told him she was spooked. She’s left New York City to visit the Wind River Ranch, where Roan is a wrangler, and just as he can pick up a horse’s mood, he can feel the tension coming off her body. And that vulnerability is triggering all his protective … triggering all his protective instincts. . .
Shiloh Gallagher likes the gray-eyed cowboy’s dry humor—and the Special Forces background that lends him a stoic, powerful presence. But she’s been scarred by trauma and her mother’s murder . . . and knows a strong man can be dangerous. She came to wide-open Wyoming to flee a threat that’s left her unable to write her novels. Now, as she rides horses with Roan and helps him build an isolated cabin, she’s slowly letting down her guard. But danger has followed her west, and they won’t have a future together unless they defeat a killer from her past. . .

I loved this story. There are some dark moments, but most of the story is light, family oriented, building and showing strength of character as Shiloh overcomes some of her fears. Roan is the perfect man as he controls his desires while protecting Shiloh. Their love sort of sneaks up on them. I highly recommend this story, and I look forward to the next in the series.
I received a copy of this book through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.
Shiloh knows that there’s someone watching her but she can’t convince anyone one else of it. So she goes to visit a friend of her mother’s on her ranch. Roan is a former miliarty man and when he meets Shiloh he can tell that something has her spooked. Its not long before things heat up between them and Roan learns of her problem. When they figure out who is behind everything it sends Shiloh in a tailspin of bad memories. Will they be able to end the stalking safely? Will her and Roan be able to have something serious?
This is an amazing story that once I started it I couldn’t put it down. This is a well wrtten and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.
It’s wonderful that this series is about veterans, their very real life problems and the strength that some have in them to survive.
Wonderful characters who are both dealing with their PTSD but manage to find love and healing in each other.
Steamy and scary. A female in distress and a strong cowboy to save her.
I received the audiobook free from the author and am under no obligation to leave a review but am willingly posting my review.
Lindsay McKenna used to be an “auto-buy” author for me in the 1980’s and 1990’s, but her work in the past few years seems like it’s just a retread of old themes and with little or none of the spark she used to bring to her writing. I’m halfway through this first book in her “new” Wind River series, and the copy-editing is so poor that I want to throw my e-reader across the room every few pages. Words which should be (and could be) in italics for emphasis, are typed in ALL CAPS. The plot feels predictable as well. The only bright spots are the descriptions of the hero’s cabin, but even those are long-winded and don’t feel consistent with the characterization of the alpha-male “operator” hero.
Since there are so many reviews for this book, I’m going to keep this short. I loved the writing in this story. I actually felt Shiloh’s terror of her stalker. Tired of not being able to leave her apartment, she left New York to stay with an old family friend in Wyoming. But there was so much more to this story than a woman hiding from a stalker. She found a man she could depend on and love. The love scenes were different than any I had ever read and I read A LOT. They actually made love not just had sex. Even though I loved this book and the author’s writing, there were a couple of things that I didn’t like, such as how often these two thought about wanting the other. And something Shiloh did near the end was dumb. She was a very intelligent woman so this didn’t fit her personality.
I recommend this book to romance fans who like a bit of suspense in their stories.
I love reading about your Wind River characters. It is so refreshing to hear about modern day Western Romances. Please keep them coming.
Took too long for anything to happen
Currently reading the entire series of Wind River. The books can be standalone, but they build on each other and characters appear in all. These books are tribute to our veterans who have given their all to our country and are having to flounder on their own. I like how Ms McKenna has dedicated each story to a specific malady, writing with such zeal that it makes the reader want to jump right into the fray. Thanks for such an enlightening series!
2.5 Wow that’s descriptive Stars
Wind River Wrangler was an okay read but just wasn’t my jam. I had two problems with this book that really kept me from connecting with the story. For one it was slow moving. I mean slowwwwww. I am good with a slow burn as long as it doesn’t get boring and at times I got bored. It moved so slow I felt like I was standing still. For 2 this book was so overly descriptive it bogged down the book and caused some of the slow pace. Everything in this book was described in such over the top detail that it got repetitive and tedious. Roan and Shiloh were both likeable characters. They had good character development, but them, their relationship and the story plot got lost in the abundance of details dumped on the reader. At least for me. To give an example their first kiss went on for paragraphs just a kiss ……paragraphs.
Come on it’s just too much. And the whole book reads like that. I can’t even tell you how many times it was mentioned that she was a writer and him a member of the black ops. I felt my eyes start to glaze over a few times. So while I did like Roan and Shiloh. And I did like the plot the pace and the detail dumping caused me to disconnect from the story and lose interest.
This book starts the new series titled Wind River Valley. The story centers around Roan Taggart, former military man and currently a wrangler, and Shiloh Gallagher, a writer fleeing for fear of her life.
As much as I have enjoyed other books by this author, I have to confess this one was extremely slow and too much time was spent in the descriptions of the area etc. I found myself skipping pages.
Thus never feeling engaged to the plot or the characters.
Hopefully , the next one will pick up the speed.
I was entrusted this copy by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
