Moving west was a duty for Kaitlin, it was what her father wanted, being sold for debts was not!
As we know there are numerous reasons that so many families headed west, but in Kaitlin’s case, her father caught the fever of the new life. Along the way, her mother fell ill and was not able to recover, they lost her. Now feeling trapped Kaitlin had nowhere else to go, except to continue with her father and brother. When they arrived in the South Dakota Territory in 1803 it was early summer, hot, and humid. Her father was the first to build their log home outside the walls of the fort because they had not seen any activity from the Indians for quite a while. He thought it would be safe although he had ignored the advice of others. She knew, or at least suspected the real reason! It was an everyday occurrence that they would return home drunk and not even think about bringing food. Or were they even able to hunt? She had been the only one providing food for their meager lives. She had learned to trap small animals and gathered as many plants as possible when they were available, but there were some days it was not enough, there was nothing to eat!
Spirit Bear, the War Chief of the Oglala tribe had been watching the white dogs (wasicus) for many moons now. Other than they did not know how to care for the land, trees, and nature, they did not appear to be a threat to his people. He had also been watching the white woman’s (winyan) actions. She did not know that he had been observing her, as he sat astride his magnificent painted steed with only the strands of his black hair moving in the light breeze. He had never seen anyone that had honey-kissed skin and deeply golden hair that shined like a beacon in the sun, not understanding the feelings that filled him. It angered him that the wasicus were not even protecting this unusual winyan. As he watched she seemed to sense that something was different and began moving back to her home. When she reached the door, she turned, and their eyes met. He was astonished that she did not scream and run wild-eyed away from him but instead stood defiantly. And yet he could see her trembling, but she met his eyes. He did not understand but he was pleased. And the story begins.

What did I like? This storyline impressed me very much and I certainly enjoyed it. I thought the style was a little different than other stories that I have read in the past. I guess all women readers like it when the lead character is a strong female, backed up by a strong handsome, and virulent male. You will find that both of them will delight you. The other characters that Sheri has in her cast are unique and entertaining, making everything come together. Furthermore, I was thrilled to find out that this book has been set to be a movie sometime in the future. We do not have enough westerns produced lately.
What will you like? Amazing characters that fill the pages with lots of action, emotions, and excitement. The plight of the storyline will overwhelm you, with some of those feelings when you read more of what happened when the Native Americans were overrun with the white men during the 1800s. Sheri fills the pages with a look from their point of view, what their lives were like, and the emotions that the wasicus could never understand. She shows the differences in beliefs when in reality there is no difference between the two, just words. Most importantly is how they care for their entire village. How the needs of all were taken care of, knowing that this love of the village was shared. Her lead character, Kaitlin, tries to understand their lives and then falls for the handsome man that she comes to love. Unknowingly without understanding the ramifications of what that love will cost her. An excellent read that I will remember for a long time. Sheri also sent me book two, and I am on to that one now, “Passions of the Heart.”
