The second title in the Runaway series is a sweet, and emotional second chance romance.
Despite her upbringing Gemma is a driven, focused and successful businesswoman, but despite all her successes she still hasn’t found her place in the world.
Easton appears to be a strong, gruff, stoic and sullen rancher, but underneath he has a heart of gold.
This pair are both quite guarded and are inexplicably drawn to each other, despite the hurts of the past. The sexual tension and chemistry oozes off the page, and their connection is undeniable.
With strong themes of family, friendship and love you wont want to miss Wild Highway if you are a fan of Devney Perry’s previous works. I will be eagerly awaiting the release of the next addition to the Runaway series.
4.5 Stars
This was such an enjoyable and emotional second chance romance with the perfect mix of angst and romance. Gemma and Easton are both flawed and easy to relate to.
Gemma’s life has been a rough road. When she was younger, her home life was extremely toxic so she left. Since then, she has fought hard to make something of her life and worked even harder. What starts as a road trip to find herself ends up being a surprising journey.
Once I picked up this story, I couldn’t put it down. Gemma and Easton’s story is addictive and the perfect mix of emotional and steamy!
I love this series so much already and I can’t wait to see what adventure we go on next with this crew from the junkyard!
Grateful to have received a complimentary ARC copy to honestly review.
RELEASE/ REVIEW
Title: Wild Highway
Author: Devney Perry
Genre: enemies-to-lovers/Second chance romance
My rating:
Wow, this was incredible! Wild Highway is book two in the Runaway series, and it’s amazing. Perry outdid herself with this emotional, heartwarming read. It sucks you in from start to finish and leaves you wanting more.
I really loved the concept of this story. Loved the fact that Gemma’s a strong heroine. She’s wealthy, but by her own bootstraps. No one else can take credit. She’s from a rough background that I found remarkable, considering the outcome. She’s a self-made mogul. But walks away from it all, hitting familiar territory to find herself.
Greer Ranch and Mountain Resorts, is her home-away-from-home. And feels like warm comfort food on Sunday’s with family. In other words, it’s full of charm, substance, and every feel-good crux her life’s been missing. There, she reunites with a friend or two. Even a past love she’d long forgotten, or so she’d thought. She never quite got over Easton. The angry cowboy who abhors her presence… wonders why she’s wandered back after all this time.
Can the wealthy beauty convince Easton she’s changed, and to give her a second chance? Can Easton let his guard down and listen to his thrumming heart this time? Will these two reconcile their differences and give love a try?
This book is everything you want and more. I really loved the characters Perry presented. Beautifully broken. REAL. Even the imagery felt real. Felt just like I was on Greer Ranch and I was apart of their world. So sad it ended. Definite reread.
*Thanks so much Mrs. Perry for creating and providing this amazing story to review. I loved every bit of it.*
Gemma and easton are another amazing journey in this series.
I love all Devney’s books but this series is just so different then anything I have read before.
I love how easton doesn’t make it easy for Gemma and it truly is a journey for both of them to get their happy ending.
Sometimes you want to punch Easton and possibly throw your kindle but the struggle is so worth it.
As always her other characters add so much to the story. She really layers her characters so its so amazing to live with all these characters and see where they head.
The chemistry is hot and just fireworks. I love how combustible they are together! Makes the you stay up late and you soon will be in need of a fan.
One click another winner from Ms Perry you will love it!
Ran away with my heart.
I absolutely loved this story and need to read Book 1 STAT!!
Easton and Gemma were briefly in each other’s lives then after finally giving into their passion – she left. Gemma and her friends in the junkyard did not have an easy life (hence the series title). But Gemma left Montana to make a name for herself and she is very successful. But it’s not fulfilling.
So she agrees to drive cross country for her friend, but decides to make a detour back to maybe try and make amends. This book tells the tale of friendships, feelings of betrayal and forgiveness, family – both blood and not, and love.
“…we’d pulled on our old friendship and I hadn’t been surprised when it had fit like my favorite sweater.”
I loved all the relationships in this story and while Easton and Gemma could be stubborn to a fault, they do find their way back to each other in a very real way.
Can’t wait for the next book…should be very interesting! Great set-up at the end of this one.
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
Gemma is a self-made woman. She’s dragged herself out of the gutter and built an empire but really she has nothing or no one that matters. Eventually she realises that the only time she really felt happy was in a junkyard in California and sets off on a journey to deliver a cadillac to one of her fellow ‘runaways’ from that time with a detour thrown in to apologise to another friend she abandoned on her way to the top without even a simple goodbye. What starts as a favour for her friend turns into a journey of self-discovery as she realises what she left behind in Montana
Wild Highway is the second book in Devney Perry’s Runaway Series and even though I really enjoyed the first book, Wild Highway kicks it into the shade. I loved everything about this beautiful, second chance/enemies to lovers story. Gemma’s character really caught me and had me cheering her on as I read. She must’ve had to have been tough not only to achieve what she did with her business building it herself but to have survived the horrors of her childhood but she never once comes across a bitch. Her vulnerability shines through and her longing to belong somewhere even though she doesn’t admit that to herself. For Easton, Gemma is the one walked away without a backward glance just when he thought they were starting something. He’s treating their relationship as little more than a series of hook ups, not trusting that she’d ever consider staying & then, as she opens up more & more about her past, he doesn’t feel he can force her to stay somewhere she doesn’t want to be. I loved the part where he tells her “I’m not going to beg you to stay Gemma” and hurt for Gemma at her whispered response “No one ever does.” The chemistry between these two characters is so palpable that you just want to bang their heads together….. or lock them in a room until they they start to really listen to each other. I can’t wait to read Kat & Cash’s story in mainly because I want to catch with Gemma & Easton. On a side note with regard to the character of Karson – why do I keep visualising him as a priest?
This second book in the Runaway Series is as delightful as the first, telling the story of a group of teens who grew up living in a junkyard as family. So far we have met Londyn who lived in Boston, but after a miserable marriage decides to take the junkyard Cadillac ( now beautifully restored) they lived in as teens back to California. She makes it as far as West Virginia and the call of the road is done for her. Gemma Lane, a very successful business woman, is next. Giving up her company that was consuming her life, she picks up the Cadillac from Londyn for her adventure. Taking her time across the country.
The pull of a mountain resort in Montana, and the opportunity to apologize for a wrong she felt she had done steers her from the highway. Greer Ranch and Mountain Resort was where Londyn, Gemma, and Katherine started their new lives after leaving the junkyard. All worked at the resort in varying positions and loved the summer there. Gemma left when the opportunity of a lifetime appeared for her, but left suddenly with out telling a soul. Not only leaving Katherine, but also a young man who was starting to become important to her.
This is a story of friends, forgiveness and love you won’t be able to put down. Katherine is now running the resort, enjoying the challenge and the family atmosphere. She listens to Gemma, and finds it in her heart to forgive. But there’s one more person, and she has to work hard to convince him. I love the blending of each character seamlessly leading to the next. Can’t wait for Runaway Book #3.
Pat Fordyce
Everything. This book is EVERYTHING a romance should be. Devney Perry writes a romance that takes you through all the feels and wraps it all up in a nice HEA. This stand alone is the second book of her Runaway Series and I can’t wait to go back on the road.
Man this just gets better and better. If you have read the first book then you know this book is Gemma’s one.
Gemma out of all of the runaway’s is the most successful. She had her own business and she has literally put her life on hold to create it. But now that she has everything she has ever wanted, it feels empty and lonely. So she sells everything, and gets the Cadillac from her friend and drives to a little that she was had a stopover and felt that this could be home.
This kind of puts her in the path of an old acquaintance… Easton Greer.
That man . . . grr. I wanted to strangle him and kiss him and kick him and lick him all in the same moment.
Easton and Gemma shared one night together before she left him behind. But it was something so much more, something that both of them hasn’t ever forgotten. But there is some things that need to be dealt with, anger that needs to be sorted and Gemma kind of seems a bit unnerved to be in Easton’s presence again.
The chemistry between these two was so good. I love how this author makes you fall in love with the characters, and get so invested in their lives. Gemma didn’t have an easy life but watching her let Easton in and trust him will have you swooning and trying to get to see if they get their happily ever after. I can see that this will be one of those series that I will be able to read over and over again in the future
Devney Perry writes beautiful stories with characters you love and is a definite must-read author. I have to say I absolutely loved Wild Highway, which is book 2 in her Runaway series. Though this can be read as a standalone, the stories are interconnected and both books were great reads! Wild Highway was a sweet and charming second chance romance with all the best feels.
Gemma has come a long way from her childhood, but still looking for her place. When she decides to go on a road trip with her friend, she comes across Easton, someone she has history with. And not all of it good. Easton is definitely not happy to see her again. And yet, their chemistry is undeniable. Watching them fall and get to know each other again was everything and I loved it. Another great read from Devney Perry and one I highly recommend!
Another great story, it was full of “hate”, sexy and sweet moments, I had to read it in on sitting because it was that amazing!
5 Stars
Devney Perry has done it again!!! Wild Highway was PHENOMENAL!!! I have been struggling with reading lately and this story finally took me out of my slump. It is the second book in the Runaway series and while it can be read as a stand-alone, I really do recommend reading them in order.
Wild Highway is a second chance romance that will take you on an incredible journey filled with friendships, hope, and most importantly love. It had me feeling all the feels and like with every book Ms. Perry writes, it had my heart bursting with love for the characters.
Wild Highway is a beautifully written story that I devoured in one sitting. Gemma and Easton were EVERYTHING!! Their chemistry was electrifying and they were so well written. I am so excited to see where Ms. Perry takes this series next! Highly recommend reading this book!
Devney Perry is one of my favorite authors. I love her writing style, the explosive climaxes, and the heroes she creates.
This series has slightly smaller books, so you might think that they might be missing something. Well, you’d be wrong.
With both Runaway Road and Wild Highway I learned that it doesn’t matter the word count, Perry gives you all the feels. I cried, I laughed and I swooned HARD.
Easton is not happy with Gemma being back after so long and they fight ALL. THE. TIME. And they are so good at it!
With Wild Highway, you have an “enemies”-to-lovers romance with a bit of a small town trope and also a second-chance story.
I can’t wait to continue this series!
Wild Highway is the second book in the Runaway Series, and this time round we get Gemma’s story, and in Devney’s typical way she manages to gift us readers with a story that she’s stirred in the most unexpected of ways.
Gemma’s one of these self made woman, years of hard work and sacrifice have allowed her to prove to both herself and those around her that she’s more than the messed up kid and nothing like her mother she’d left behind all those years ago. But why does she feel so empty? seeking some sort of answer sees her embarking on a journey of self discovery where she ends up in the last place she expected to go back to, trying to right a wrong. And this is where we meet Easton a man who, after 11 years is still feeling jaded towards Gemma, for years he’s worked towards trying to build up his own little empire despite still living in the shadows of his family. The chemistry and banter between these two is way off the charts, yes they have their personal issues which they need to work through but the journey they take to get there is beautiful one, it’s takes us readers on a road of self discovery, forgiveness, finding home and of course love.
I’m really enjoying this series and can’t wait to read the next one! Each one is so different but every word just captures you and makes you just want to jump in your car & go on a road trip! Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Gemma is on her way to California after she just sold her business but makes a detour to visit an old friend. Not knowing what to expect, it’ll be a journey of a lifetime as she also crosses paths again with someone she’d never thought she would see again. Although she and Easton parted ways in a sour way, there’s still a lot of baggage between them that both haven’t faced yet. When Gemma needs to get back on the road, Easton challenges her to stay and she takes it on. While getting into a routine it may be the one thing that she didn’t think she was missing. The more time they spend together, the more Easton begins to realise that neither are the same person that they once were; that Gemma has changed. Slowly their relationship starts to evolve but will it be enough for Gemma to stay… and maybe for good?…
5 STARS
I loved this so much. What a journey! I can’t get enough of second chance romance and this one gave me all the feels! Gemma and Easton might be my new favourite DP couple and one I won’t forget for a very long time.
I love the premise of this series. A group of runaways that lived out of this old Cadillac whom have made something of themselves but are using the old car to reconnect with their past and find love along the way.
Gemma has not had it easy in life. From 16 years old she has had to figure life out on her own with no parental support but instead met a group of runaways and they made their own family amongst each other. Gemma has fought and came out on top and is now running a successful business but is realizing that her career is not the only thing she needs anymore to feel fulfilled and hence a road trip begins. What starts as a road trip to an old country farm to mend a friendship turns into so much more than she bargained for when she comes across her old flame, Easton Greer.
Gemma and Easton were all consuming. So many emotions and feels between these two. The enemies to lovers fibe was strong at first! Their chemistry was emotional, intense and off the charts! Although Easton resisted Gemma’s return to his life eventually he sees how perfect she is/always was for him and this connection between them I adored.
If you love a small town romance with a bit of drama, lots of swoon and all the feels, this one is for you!
*ARC received in exchange of an honest review.
My favorite in the series so far!! Little did Gemma know that a mere whim would awaken her soul and change her life forever. A beautiful story!
Gemma is a tough fighter, but underneath she is a softie, just looking for a place to belong, a place that wants her to belong.
“I’ve wanted the things I’ve never had. Family. Love. Peace.”
She’s had to fight for herself and everything she’s become. She’s forged an empire, cashed in, and now it’s time to reap the rewards.
Helping Londyn, by returning the Cadillac to California is the perfect breather from life. On a whim Gemma detours to Montana to make amends with someone she hurt long ago. But it puts her in the path of another heartache that also needs an apology. Her greatest heartache ever.
Easton is as ornery as they come, but only to Gemma.
“I didn’t need to taste Gemma’s lips. I had once and they’d been sweet and destructive, like a poisoned apple.”
They had one night, one glorious night, the best of his life. But when he woke, she was gone and so was his heart. She left before, she’ll leave again. This time he won’t let her take his heart. He could avoid her, she’ll be gone soon enough, just like last time.
“She’d be gone chasing the next dollar or wild adventure, leaving me behind, wondering what kind of man could compel her to stay.”
He could avoid her all he wanted, but his heart knew she was there. His heart wouldn’t let him forget. Neither will her’s.
“That man….grr. I wanted to strangle him and kiss him and kick him and lick him all at the same time.”
Gemma loved Montana, the ranch, the people,… Easton. She felt at home. For the first time in a long time she could breathe, she could feel. But just because she felt she belonged didn’t mean they did. Would she be family or forever a guest? To be family Gemma would have to open her heart and make herself vulnerable. Will she be able to overcome her fears to do that?
Making her vulnerability known.., to Gemma, could be what finally shatters what’s left of her or the glue that puts her back together.
Easton finds he can’t stay away. The pull is too strong. Just being near her soothes his soul.
“She put on a strong façade. She was fearless and wild. But beneath it all, she was scared. Of me, of her future. She hid her fears well, but last night I’d been given a glimpse. Would she run from those fears? Would she stay here and face them?”
He needs to open his heart, but he’s afraid too. Does he have what she needs for her to stay?
“If I kissed her, would she kiss me back? Or would I see the Cadillac’s taillights racing toward the highway?”
This story is my favorite in the series so far. Gemma’s heartache, fierce determination, and vulnerability drew me to her. The author created a difficult journey to describe, but did it so smoothly I could feel the Montana sun on my skin and wind in my hair. A true testament to the writer’s talent. Creating a steely, determined character like Gemma, who also has a great depth of fear, took finesse. It’s never easy to repair damages or be vulnerable. The character and her story worked its way into my heart. I latched on and enjoyed every minute of the ride!
Oh man, y’all know I’m a huge fan of second-chance romance! I love seeing true love win when given a second chance. That sometimes time and distance and a few life lessons are just what’s needed for two people to realize what’s missing—what they’ve lost. And that’s just what happened with Gemma Lane.
Gemma’s been running away from her childhood for years. And by running away, I mean building her brand, making her fortune. Securing her future. But in doing so, she’s not happy with her life. And she doesn’t quite understand her melancholy until she arrives in Montana to try to right a wrong.
But that proves to be easier said than done—oh not with fixing her friendship. Nope, it’s trying to prove to Easton Greer that there’s more to her than just her money. And that she’s done running away. That this time, she’s running toward something that looks an awful lot like love.
And in love is what I am with Wild Highway. I loved Gemma’s vulnerability. Her openness, her insecurity. Her ridiculous ability to love wholeheartedly. And to forgive past injustice. And I loved her together with Easton.
Gemma is just what Easton needs to balance him. Balance out his fiery temper, yet unending patience in dealing with his father and grandfather and their meddling. Easton, once his feathers settle, has been in love with Gemma since she was nineteen, though it took him a while to realize it. But once he did, whoa, do the sparks fly between them—in and out of the bedroom.
This Runaway series is just hitting it’s stride, and I can’t wait to see where the road takes Kat and Cash in Quarter Miles.
An amazing 5 star must read page turner. This is the second story in the Runaway series.
Gemma has the Cadillac that she will turn over when she hits California. She quit everything, sold her company and going on a road trip. On her way there she takes a detour into her past. Now she finds herself in Montana confronted to a past she left behind a decade ago. Easton has not forgotten or forgiven her.
This was an intriguing and romantic second chance story. Gemma hasn’t really found herself. She became successful despite a difficult start in life. She wasn’t satisfied with her life but now she will find a place, a purpose. Beautifully written with an amazing storyline that had me hooked. A solid page turning addictive story. Bottomline this is a must read.
Standalone told in a dual POV with an HEA. It is part of a series but the author does give a brief recap from the previous couple and their story. I encourage the readers to read them in order for better enjoyment. I highly recommend this story.
What I’ve always appreciated about Devney Perry’s storytelling is just how relatable and realistic her plot line and characters are. There’s a depth to her heroes and heroines that is slowly unraveled throughout the course of their stories, allowing readers to be fully aware of all that the main characters have overcome and learned along the way, and in her newest release, Wild Highway, Gemma Lane heads out on a much-needed adventure – one that forces her to confront her past and to admit what she’s been running from all this time.
It’s clear that Gemma ran away from her past, never wanting to deal with what happened and as much as she claims that the life she’s leading is everything she’s always wanted it to be, it’s clear there’s something missing, because as much as her professional life is thriving, personally, there hasn’t been much forward progress. And it’s that idea of belonging…of living life to the fullest that has Gemma setting out on a road trip, and while she’s looking to make amends, I don’t think she was prepared to confront her past in a way that would redefine her present in so many important ways.
Easton Greer is a person from Gemma’s past that will, most definitely, not receive her with open arms and will make her work to bridge the divide between them. I have to say…I completely understood Easton’s issues with Gemma and the fact that he didn’t want to get close to her again, just for her to runaway a second time. He believes this is still who Gemma is; the only problem is, though, that the chemistry they shared before hasn’t dissipated, so as much as he wants to keep her at a distant, treat her with the disdain he thinks she deserves, he also can’t stay away from her, which exponentially complicates things given that, at some point, she’ll head back out on the highway, looking for a new place to call home.
There’s nothing like a Devney Perry small-town, second chance romance. She’s so good at allowing readers to feel absolutely everything the characters do: the good and the bad and the highs and the lows. And because there’s an already established connection between the hero and the heroine, it’s easier to understand how complex their relationship is and why their past has to be dealt with before either of them can move forward, hopefully, together.
I can’t wait to head back out on the road with the next runaway.
